can anyone recommend homeowner and car insurance company?

Can anyone recommend a good company for bundled homeowner and car ins?
If not bundled, can someone make a recommendation for homeowner ins? My homeowner insurance went up by over 25% in 2 years.

retiredguy123 04-30-2020 10:35 AM

I have ASI (which is now Progressive) for homeowners and Allstate for auto. But, I don't think you can really depend on any insurance company to maintain consistent rates. If you have them long enough, they will raise your rate. I also don't think it is worth it to bundle homeowners and auto because I have found that the advertised saving is not what they say it is. Better to shop around on a regular basis if you want to save money.

FWIW: When we bought our first home in TV (9/18) we were told that you couldn't get homeowners insurance on a home in Florida if your roof was over 20 years old. (In a hurricane the roof is the first thing to go and when it does you get lots of interior damage.) When we bought our current 20 year old home a year later it was down to 15 years. Our insurance company gave us 30 days after closing to have a new roof installed. A few months later we sold the first house and the buyers couldn't get insurance unless a new roof was put on. (Existing roof was 17 years old at that point.) We and the buyers split the cost. Just something to be aware of if you want to switch insurance companies and your home is 15+ years old.

We have Progressive thru Village insurance with sinkhole coverage $2000 but car insurance thru Hartford with AARP membership saved almost half $571/yr.

We use The Villages Insurance, shop it every two years, so far not enough incentive to change. Claim process during the last hurricane was easy and they were both efficient and responsive.

Have Geico many years for Auto & Progressive for Homeowners since we moved here 2009. Both went down this year.

Try All in One in the Villages. Ask for Barbara

We contacted 5 insurance agencies 9 months ago. Our best rates and coverage came from Dees Insurance Group in Sarasota (941-306-4524). We have home and car with them, and their customer service is first rate. Make sure you have a wind mitigation statement for your house. That will save you a lot.

I cut my bill just about in half by going over to Triple A...exact same coverage that I had too

Have had them now for two years....no problems (but then again, no claims either)

They also take a credit card (with no additional fee) and my card gives me 2% cash back

The trick with insurance coverage pricing, is that many insurance companies will escalate your price slightly greater than the rate of inflation. Now you won't notice it at first, because sometimes the first year renewal is lower, but you will notice that over time, your current policy is higher than the original policy plus the rate of annual inflation. This increase means that they are creating excess economic profits over the initial sale, which is why companies focus on customer retention so much. As a consumer, your best bet is to shop your insurance coverage every three (3) years to get back to the current new policy rate.

Yes, I have done product insurance pricing in my financial career, and watched the actions and the results. A 1% increase over the rate of inflation creates a 5% premium to the marketplace in 5 years. . . . :boxing2::MOJE_whot:

We have had State Farm since 1984 or 1985 and have home, car and life insurance through them. We have had a few claims, auto accident and house storm damage, and they were easy and fast to work with. I have had other companies give us quotes to see if we could get cheaper coverage but I guess we have been with them so long that no company could come close to our rates.

ficoguy 04-30-2020 07:07 PM

GEICO. Bundle it.

jrg908369 05-01-2020 04:52 AM

We have always used USAA but The Villages Insurance beat their rates. Worth looking at them.

We purchased Travelers (home, auto, umbrella) through The Villages Insurance. They will do the search for you and send you a quote to consider.

After 30 years with State Farm for our homeowners, auto, umbrella etc, we got rid of them for egregious increases. We went last year with Farmers for the whole kit and caboodle. Our Agent is Peter McCumber at 352-272-1508. He will be happy to quote you. Good Luck.

noslices1 05-01-2020 06:16 AM

State Farm went out of the home insurance business in 2010, but came back a few years ago. They quoted me about 3X what I was paying. I have been with them for 60 years with my car insurance and had homeowners with them until I moved to Florida. Now I have American Integrity through the Villages Insurance, but rates have gone up, so am shopping now for new company.

wirenail444 05-01-2020 06:36 AM

Geico for the car and ASI for the house. Cannot beat GEICO. ASI IS ONE OF THE FEW THAT COVERS SINK HOLES.

Pedrocarrasco01@yahoo.com 05-01-2020 06:37 AM

Call your local Allstate office

I have Allstate for my vehicles and St Johns which is a subsidiary of Allstate for my home including sinkhole and catastrophe, all done at the Abshier Insurance Allstate Office, great folks, extremely happy with coverage (also golf cart).

Years ago we had a GE subsidiary that doubles home insurance rates in 7 years -even my agent was astounded. Like cable and other things - you MUST compare on a regular basis. My Geico went up $ 300 last year so I switched to PRogressive. Now I get a geico letter pleading to come back daily. Their response as I asked why so high upon renewal was market has changed ! Yeah right .. my car is worth LESS and I have a year MORE experience driving.

villageidiot1 05-01-2020 07:07 AM

And State Farm is going to return some of you premium, I think the figure I heard was 2 billion dollars so that might help.

DLJ1657 05-01-2020 07:08 AM

I just went through the process of acquiring quotes for home, auto, and golf cart insurance during the last quarter of 2019. We have been here for 5 years and happy customers of Thomas Insurance Agency (Fruitland Park) but the rates for the companies they sell for continually raised, without any additional benefits (and no claims). I priced Villages, Allstate, State Farm, and AAA. By far, AAA was best - and better without being bundled because they were able to give the lowest price with comparable or better coverage. Prices for comparable coverage were lower on home and golf cart. Price for home insurance was $9 less for the year than what we were paying through Thomas Insurance, but the AAA policy also included sinkhole insurance which we did not have before - so that was a "win" for us. We've been members of AAA for years, so that was already in place. If you have a AAA credit card (or want to apply for one) there is also another discount available when you pay your premium with it.

A few of you mentioned you have sink hole insurance. My understanding is its only good IF it damages your house. If the sink hole appears in your yard and doesn't damage your house insurance doesn't cover that and you will have to pay the tens of thousands of dollars out of your pocket to repair it.

Traveler's Insurance through The Villages Insurance. I recommend Sandy Manion. 352-751-6622
I found her very knowledgeable and helpful.

Some insurance companies use a strategy called "price optimization". They raise prices for their most loyal customers because they know that most of them will not shop around for another company. It's all about increasing profits, even though they know they will lose some loyal customers.

We recently switched to AAA from progressive and bundled car and home for a $700 yearly savings.

We stayed with State Farm when we moved here 2 years ago. Easy at the time because of multiple discounts. Just had The Villages Insurance do a quote on ALL of our policies. Thought we could save. We were going to save a little until we realized we would lose our discount. Not worth it. Good policy and service.

I have had Geico since moving here and, in spite of getting quotes, from almost everyone, Geico still remains the cheapest so far. I have not bundled yet but expect to explore that later.

If you are a veteran or member of your family was a veteran you can get very good rates from USAA. Been using them for years and all my children are using USAA.

We have State Farm bundled plus sink hole protection. Kelly Matz 352.661.3456 Home, Auto Insurance & More in FL | Kelly Matz – State Farm(R) They are knowledgeable about The Villages and the coverages you should have for your area. We have been with SF for over 40 years and they have been responsive to all of our needs over that time. Not necessarily the least expensive but provides us with peace of mind.

RDhot 05-01-2020 09:37 AM

One of the Most expensive out there

jagdl 05-01-2020 09:39 AM

When looking at sinkhole coverage make sure you are getting the right policy. One policy which is common only covers if your house is condemned. An $80,000 driveway hole will be denied. A few questions on the front end could be worthwhile.

Been a USAA customer (for all insurance) for 55 years! Greatest company, of any kind, we have ever dealt with. NEVER the slightest disagreement about damages/loss etc. Get hundreds of dollars per year reimbursed. Two days ago received a reimbursement from them because for the past two months claims are way down because of stay at home orders.

If you can qualify, there is no comparison to any other insurance company, period!

I've had USAA for 55 years, for all policies. It's not only price that makes the difference. We've had many losses/damages in that long period and NEVER had a disagreement with the company.

Just this week they gave a significant rebate due to all claims being way down because of all the stay at home orders.

TOTV site guidelines are that you must have a minimum of ten posts to recommend or criticize a business or service. If you have posted a recommendation on this thread and it doesn’t appear, that is the reason.
