Newbies requesting dance venue information please

For future info:
Just wondering, are there dance venues that play current toons to dance to? Such as hip-hop, more contemporary styles such as Jonny Lang, Anderson East, Selena Gomez. Robin Thicke and the like.
Thank you! Bill & Dani

Come clean. You're joking, right?

Dani & Bill 05-24-2020 09:57 AM

LOL i guess this answers the question!! Anyone up for opening a club ??

John_W 05-24-2020 10:01 AM

At first I was going to say, Orlando. However, there is one local entertainer "Petrina" who sings contemporary songs, she no longer does the squares, usually the country clubs, private parties, the Waterfront Hotel, etc. Check out her website.

The Villages, Entertainer Entertainment - Petrina

LiverpoolWalrus 05-24-2020 10:23 AM

At first I thought it was a joke, but maybe OP is from the Dakotas or perhaps Vietnam or one of the other countries that have been untouched.

vintageogauge 05-24-2020 10:33 AM

I never heard of any of them.

Marvic 1 05-24-2020 10:50 AM

Good question for the "Line Dancers" they'll even dance to the tune of The National Anthem... :1rotfl:

I do understand your question, but I am not aware of a specific venue that plays more modern music. About the "newest" music I can remember hearing was from (gulp) Madonna, Elton John, and Billy Joel. It is possible that Margarita Republic might play pop tunes later at night, you can check with them.

Ha, ya got that straight

We saw a group of French Canadian Snowbirds actually get up and dance to "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" when we lived down in Ft Lauderdale

It was request night...I was going to request "Amazing Grace" just to see if they'd dance to that too, but my wife took my wallet away

To answer your question: it isn't likely you'll find one in golf-cart distance to the Villages, and most people who are members of this forum wouldn't likely know of anything close to what you're looking for in surrounding towns/counties.

The reason for this is - the vast majority of members of this forum are over 60, and most of the rest of us are over 50. We didn't grow up with those bands, we never danced to those bands, the local radio station doesn't play their songs.

HOWEVER - Jonny Lang isn't exactly contemporary, nor has anyone ever accused him of being hip-hop. Not sure why you included him.

This part of Florida is mostly older folks whose most recent foray into "modern" music is the disco era of the late 1970's into the 1980's.

Stu from NYC 05-24-2020 12:23 PM

Pay a local band enough and they might do a private party for what you want

Our granddaughter is a national instructor for Hip Hop, and 6 other classes. Has great music, and videos she has made with Twitch. Also is also captain and Choreographer for dance team at college.

Has plenty of time on her hands since her premed classes and her cadaver labs have been put on hold.

She might be the right age (19) for the music you’re looking for.:a040:

Funny to see couples dancing to Chuck Berry's "My Diggeling"..... : )

Not sure I follow. Arrogant? How? I didn't think any dance venues were open anywhere near the Villages while we're all still following CDC guidelines (I'm guessing that's why some people here were wondering if it was a joke). It may well be a different scene altogether in the states and countries that have hardly been affected though, and that's what I was getting at. OP could conceivably be a recent arrival to the Villages.

I hope I'm wrong and there are indeed places to go out and dance, but I doubt it.

Maybe a bit quick to judge?

I imagine things are pretty dead around the labs.

Us oldies need to remember that the further South they build, the younger the crowd is getting. You will probably have to leave TV for that kind of music.

Sunflower1 05-25-2020 07:53 AM

We are in our 50s and it’s hard to get music from the 70s, 80s and beyond. It is coming, but slowly. Very slowly.

theruizs 05-25-2020 07:54 AM

We prefer Justin Bieber or Billy Eilish when we feel like gettin jiggy wit it.

Maybe I don’t understand your post, but the bands at the squares (when open) play a lot of 70’s and 80’s music. Right now, not a lot of options for live music of any kind.

brunogal 05-25-2020 09:09 AM

The DJs at Margarita Republic do a good job and yes, Petrina gets it, too. FYI, I'm a Villager and a member of the NBA's Orlando Magic Classic 407 Hip Hop entertainment team....minimum age is 55. It's coed, 23 members on the current squad (5 of which are Villagers). Hip Hop is great fun & exercise! #DancerforLife #Don'tStop!

I'm 68 and I listen to just about all kinds of music, including songs by the artists you mentioned in your post. Most anyone who loves music has favorite songs from the past that are associated with cherished memories. And I think if you truly love music, you can keep expanding your musical tastes. There's still a lot of great music being made out there! Good luck Bill and Dani. Maybe take a look in Ocala for dance venues.

sandybeachgal 05-25-2020 09:58 AM

OMG! Love me some Twitch!

Our granddaughter wants to Skype her Medical School admins to see if they can get Covid cadavers.

Feels the ability to see destruction of the entire body, instead of just what virus did to the lungs, will give new insight on issues later.

Started reading X-rays at 3, including diagnosing her own fracture at 5 correctly, then bluntly told the doctor she will make a great orthopedic surgeon.

OlifOlif 05-25-2020 12:39 PM

Last week, Hunter and Taylor told me over the phone about their music. Many of those favorites are people I never heard of that mostly appear on the Tick Tock(??) channel.

When they send another phone letter, I will ask them.

The Villages is for Seniors. The reason it is so popular is these Seniors can enjoy their music. Country & Oldies tunes is the big draw. You will have to wait 30-40 years for the music you like in this area.

John_W 05-25-2020 04:01 PM

Just because someone will say it's current or new music, doesn't mean it's hip-hop, dance, pop, or anything at all like that. Rock music is still being made, many of the older bands are still recording and many newer bands I've picked up on. These are some of the newer bands;

Evanescence, The Cure, Future Islands, Need to Breathe, Kings of Leon, Soul Asylum, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Collective Soul (my wife's favorite), The Calling, Adele, Snow Patrol, The Verve Pipe, The Darkness, Live, The Killers, REM, Alanis Morrisette, The Wallflowers, Drake White, Alabama Shakes, Bush, The Smashing Pumpkins, Rammstein, Scott Stapp and 3 Doors Down are just a few.

There are some options but they are not plentiful. Read the Recreation News in detail once it is going full steam ahead and don't limit yourself to what is going on just inside of TV.
