Is theft right?

From non villages discussion the comments about a stolen Obama bumper sticker. Several folks made it into a joke, and it probably was meant to be one, but what made it non-palatable to me was the lack of a caveat that theft is wrong no matter how small it may seem to you from most of the jesters. In my opinion, I see the removal of the sticker as an assault on the mans right to express his personal political affiliation.

I found this very disturbing. I am just tying to put this is perspective. Personal property is just that even while on a public street. Why a person steals does not make it right. Imagine how may folks will read this post and think it is OK if the theft is considered funny, they will join in. This was most likely not a Halloween prank, but a theft of personal property. Lets have the pro-choice folks start removing Pro-life stickers. How about if the Darwin folks remove the Fish from our cart or car.

Now, if you have any sense of responsibility to do right, please don't make a joke out of crime. I just want to find out if anyone finds this small insignificant theft a crime or a joke. It should not matter what the dollar amount is. Would it be OK if the sticker was a 200 dollar sign attached to the bumper.

I challenge everyone to simply respond with:

1. Even something this small and inexpensive is not OK.
or
2. Its only a few dollars so its OK.

Lou - Theft is theft. Wrong is wrong. I may not agree with some of the things you post, but this one is right on.

During anger, I have posted somethings on the political site that I myself do not believe. It is like when a pack of big dogs have one lone raccoon cornered. Even though it is in vain, the raccoon will bite back the best way he can. I have stopped bleeding from the past beatings and will tone it down to what I really believe in the future.

Someone once stole a few pieces of jewelry from me - a few bracelets, probably in the $100 range each, except for one, which wasn't expensive at all, but it was a gift from my now deceased father. I'm sure you know which bracelet I would PAY to get back!

You're of course right that theft is wrong in any context. It's kind of obvious, really. But nothing is humorless either.

You are right. Stealing is wrong. Humor is supposed to lighten a situation.

But if you want a pro choice sticker to stay on, don't park at the Cathedral.

And that was supposed to be a little funny.

Democrat or Republican, we are a bunch of old opinionated folks and this place has about 3 out of 4 people that are Republican, and some of them are ornery as hell.

Gracie, Gracie. Am I to believe that you are of the opinion that Democrats cannot be ornery?:MOJE_whot:

It only takes a pea-brain to steal a bumper sticker.

Pturner, what are you doing over here? Take a wrong turn?

Thanks Lou

You expressed our feelings about a seemingly innocent prank. We are now real Villagers, we close on our home next Friday. We hope our new hometown will accept not only our views, but all views with respect.

We are a military family and last year (pre-TV) someone stole a "Support the Troops" bumper sticker from our car. Can't tell you how upsetting that was, especially since our daughter was serving in Afghanistan at the time. I always try (emphasis on "try") to put myself in the other person's shoes. Everyone is entitled to an opinion no matter how wrong and stupid it might be.

Personally, I get a kick out of people who still profess their devotion to Obama with stickers on their cars. It's OK with me. It's not as much a source of amusement to me as the Jimmy Carter sticker I saw on one car not that long ago, though, but it will be.

They were too lazy to find out what he was all about and too lazy to take off the sticker.

What model car was that anyway??? Did it look like it had been washed since 1980?

It was on a older Volvo station wagon complete with anti-war, anti-Bush, save-the-whales, and myriad others, but Jimmy Carter was centered on the tailgate in a "place of honor", you might say. I really wanted to wait to see this driver, but time was against me, at that moment.

Guest 08-02-2010 03:11 AM

bumper sticker

While waiting to tee off at Truman, a cart pulled up with Obama sign on front of cart, and a man also waiting to tee off, flipped-off the driver, why? I believe in freedom of expression but that was waaaay over the top!

Guest 08-02-2010 04:31 AM

Not bad, about 50/50. Some agree that a theft is a theft and some do not. I thought more would condemn the action. Oh Well.
