Gospel Sunday sounds good.

We are new TV and have heard good and bad about these restaurants so not sure if we will be coming here

charlieo1126@gmail.com 06-03-2020 07:32 AM

I wouldn’t listen to all the food critics on here, try places yourself . People who think Culver’s is fine dining don’t make the greatest food critics

We have been largely guided by recommendations as we try new food venues around here and have found quite a few that we enjoy.

When we hear lots about sanitation problems it does make us think we should dine elsewhere

Exactly. I've learned never to take restaurant recommendations from any TOTV posts as gospel. I check them out myself.:)

I use to go to the Cody's at LSL about 3 or 4 times a year. It had the most casual atmosphere you could imagine. Windows overlooking the lake, tables covered with paper, the waiter would write their name in crayon on the paper, and there more crayons in a little can you could draw or write right on the paper cloth. Every table had a larger can filled with roasted peanuts in the shell, if you needed more they had them in a big barrel in different places. Most meals came with a salad, they served the salad in a large metal bowl and the waiters would toss it right at your table. It was lettuce with ranch, nothing special but was good. My wife once went and wasn't hungry, so she just got the tossed salad and it was only $3.

I only ate basic items, my favorite was the Road Kill Chopped Steak. It was $10.99 on the lunch menu last time I was there. It's really good covered in grilled onions with mashed potatoes. One big come-on is happy hour all day, 2 for 1, so I usually ordered a draft beer and they bring you two. Of course it's $5, so it's really not a bargain but at least you didn't have to wait for the waitress.

Outside was a covered patio and we went a lot of times on Saturday and moved out there after eating. There was a couple named "Take 2" and they played from 1pm - 4pm and another entertainer came afterwards. They had a huge playlist, anything from Lady Antebellum I Need you Now to Journey, etc. They were Ronnie & Karen, and Ronnie was African American and was always telling jokes. Every week they would play The Kingsman 'Louie Louie', but Ronnie was say it's the Klansman and then Karen would correct him, sort of an Abbott & Costello routine. It was not air conditioned on the patio, but they had fans it wasn't too bad. The floors inside and out were usually covered with peanuts shells, which does bother some diners, but I looked at as part of the atmosphere.

The Mulberry location was only about 3 years old and I never ate there, one reason was I never saw a good review of that place. Brownwood I hate once and it had no view and seemed to lack something, I always felt I might as well be across the street at Gators Dockside watching the big screen TVs, which is where I would be. Also the reviews for Brownwood were mixed, usually more bad than good.

Lake Sumter Landing location, if you can get it, ask for a booth by the window

We have been Codys customers since their first day and I'm not sure we will go back when they reopen.

New Englander 06-03-2020 08:56 AM

I stopped going to the Brownwood location but in July I'll give them another chance. They always did have good draft beer.

BostonRich 06-03-2020 09:02 AM

Cody's in Mulberry is terrible. Gave them three strikes and they are out. We love the other Cody's and were excited when they announced the Mulberry store. We have been very disappointed. They need to totally revamp the Mulberry restaurant or sell it to Texas Roadhouse or Millers Ale House or another decent operator that will do a better job.

Cody's has the best BBQ ribs around.......fall off the bone good with a delectable BBQ sauce. They have an excellent salad (all you can eat) at dinner time and always cooked perfectly baked sweet potatoes. We always go to the Lake Sumter Landing locaction and we LOVE the place.

I hear you. Until the virus is done not going to restaurants other than take out but building up a list of which ones we want to try.

Leadbone1 06-04-2020 05:40 AM

Moved here about a year and a half ago and I have gone often to the Lake Sumter Cody’s. I like their food and I especially like the people there. Glad to hear the reopening is coming. I will go back.

Well, at least it should be clean which is better than it normally is except it takes a pandemic for them to do it.

Brownwood location has mediocre food with poor service. Watched a server drop a serving of ribs on the floor, put it back on the plate and then serve it to the customer. We left immediately and have never returned. Closed by Health Department several times. Needs to greatly improve for me to return.

BlackhawksFan 06-04-2020 08:41 AM

I've always enjoyed Cody's food, honestly only one time can I recall be disappointed with the food.

My issue at Cody's (mostly Mulberry -Rt42) has been the service. It's very inconsistent. I prefer to sit on the patio and I dine alone and some times I get extremely good service. It's prompt, the order is accurate, the server is nice, etc.other times the service is slow and non existent and you wait. For me to wait isn't too big a deal, I'm pretty patient but for others it's an issue as many have after dinner plans. Many times the wait is for one of two reasons: the help is inexperienced or new to the store, or they're understaffed.

I've been there several times on a Friday night in the 630-700p time range, the patio is 80-100% occupied and there are only three servers waiting on all those tables. To be honest it's never stopped me from going back because I do like the food, I can watch a game on TV and listen to some pretty good entertainment.

Wow I am sure that happens more often than we realize and of course it is very wrong, but to do it where it can be seen by a customer is incredibly stupid.

Don't let others make your decisions for you. Try them yourself, then decide!

johnojames 06-04-2020 09:30 AM

Been to all 3 Villages locations. Poor sanitation, mediocre food. Go elsewhere.

kkeennyy 06-04-2020 09:30 AM

Please don't go to Cody's! It's already too crowded. Especially when it's 2fers of draft beer.

Rich42 06-04-2020 09:45 AM

Loved Codys for many years. However, for some reason, about two years ago the employees became unfriendly, the prices went thru the roof, and they incurred many restaurant inspection citations. I will never return, there are too many other better options!

Scorpyo 06-04-2020 09:59 AM

Depends

It depends on what you are looking for? The finest cuisine? Not Cody’s, try France. The best view. Not Cody’s, try the coast. The best entertainment? Not Cody’s, try Broadway. An infinite wine list? Not Cody’s, try France again. However, if you’re looking for an OK place that has a variety of bad to good food choices (can’t go wrong with a burger, lots of ketchup and onions, and fries); bad to good service; a place that has on OK view; a place that, at times, has some really good entertainment; a place that has a 2 for 1 happy hour (beer is a good choice, their mixed drinks didn’t do it for me, then Cody’s should fit the bill. Also, the bill fit my bill. And it’s a lot closer than France or New York.

La lamy 06-04-2020 11:25 AM

So glad to hear Cody's is able to reopen. It must be such a financial stress to have to deal with these COVID times for them and most businesses. Kudos to all who had enough saved up to deal with these lean months.

Did you tell the customer his ribs that were being served to him/her had fallen on the floor? Did you speak to the manager about what you witnessed?

We have been going to Cody's since 2013. The prices, for what we usually order (baby back ribs) has been pretty darn consistent. Can't wait to see the new menu when they reopen. I will understand if there is a significant increase but we will be very willing to pay it.

Cody's in LSL has the best Margaritas on the rocks and the best frozen strawberry margaritas. The only other place that is on par with Cody's for these drinks is Fiesta Grande in Colony Plaza. Hubby and I both agree.

Don't short change Codys, you must only go to the Brownwood location, I go to the LSL location because of the view. It's right on Lake Sumter. Also, every Saturday for the last three years, excluding currently, Take 2 plays on the patio from 1:00 to 4:00, they are very good, they even play the squares sometimes.

Sometimes we go and the food is not so good. Other times it’s very good. I found the mixed drinks lacking. Too much ice and short on alcohol. Johnny Walker nest is perfect. Beer also. Sometimes the entertainment is not entertaining. Other times spectacular. The point I was making is sure you can travel and spend lots of money and get exactly what you desire. However if you’re not a food and entertainment critic you’ll find Cody’s very appealing most of the time. And quite affordable.
