Coming soon? Mandatory face masks?

Far too many folks in FL as demonstrated here in TV completely ignore two of the three actions "recommended" during the pandemic.

Wear a face mask and keep social distancing.
Hopefully most of them honor the hand washing and sanitizing.

My guess, less than 50% of us are following the guidelines.

With the spiking that is occurring and the commitment to not shut down again.....is it inevitable that masks will be made mandatory in public?
Enforcement of social distancing?

One need only to observe any venue here in TV and observe the rampant, wholesale non compliance.

It is the obvious next play for the governor.

Or he concludes most Floridians are opting to roll the dice on whether they get the virus or not. Their attitude......must be if they die they die.

However some of us do not think they should be putting us at that risk.

I am sure the usual mask flak will follow.
But instead how about offering suggestions how tho help keep the virus from spreading.

we saw the same thing up on Ocala's Paddock Mall last week....half the people were walking around in the store with masks and half didn't have a mask...like covid-19 had never crossed their radar

duh? It was a mixture of folks that should have known better and money wasn't an issue... and people at the lower end of the economy that maybe money was an issue

guess we'll continue to do as much of the little non grocery shopping that we do online

Just watched the Governors Roundtable today. So far he has no desire to enforce, his solution is education through PSA's, even though the under 40 are testing positive but not showing symptoms he isn't concerned. Even Orange County that declared a mandatory mask policy won't enforce. Take care of yourself because there are a lot of non-believers, it's only the flu, staying home is crazy people out there and you are the only one that can take care of you.

Number 10 GI 06-22-2020 05:58 PM

There is an effective deterrent to being infected, stay at home. You can have food and medicine delivered to your house. You don't have to leave your home for anything. If other people become infected it won't impact you.

billethkid 06-22-2020 06:16 PM

When the governor does not take a position and let's it be up to the individual to decide with education. That seems to be his default position. It is nothing more than decision making avoidance....perhaps even allowing deniability.

Using that logic we could do away with enforcing speed limits and leave it up to the individuals, with education, to make the right decision. :1rotfl:

I laugh.....based on observation, even with speed limit LAWS....most folks go as fast as they want anyway.

So good luck gov educating the masses and having it work!!

"non believers, it's only the flu"

If you are less than 50 years old, covid 19 is not just "only the flu" its way way less than the flu in terms of death rates. CDC puts overall death rate for all ages of the flu at 0.1 percent. CDC puts death rate for covid 19 for under 50 years old at 0.05% 70% of covid positive people under 60 are ASYMPTOMATIC and never get sick.

Do you understand the difference in those two death rates? You are not going to convince people that have a better chance of dying in a car wreck to wear a mask all the time. The world does not revolve around us oldsters. The best way for us old fogies to protect ourselves is stay home, participate in safe outdoor activities, and maintain social distances. It's safer if we do not participate in the great reopening and ridiculous to demand the whole world wear masks.

My rule is I don't enter any buildings other than home, curbside pickup of groceries and online delivery for everything else. I do have some in person DR appts but not until September. I play golf, swim, walk, ride bicycle etc and talk to my neighbors at a safe distance. I'd like to go out to eat, have a drink at a bar etc. I was supposed to be in Scotland this summer and play golf out of the heat, but I can do it next year. I can continue in this mode for quite some time and enjoy life while being safe. I don't think its fair to ask everyone to wear masks when the danger for them is so miniscule.

Paper1 06-22-2020 09:02 PM

Individual rights are wonderful but that said wearing masks in public places should be mandatory. I think it was Dr Spock that said "Logic clearly dictates that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few". I wonder how many deaths and $200,000 taxpayer funded hospital bills might have been avoided if Governors had showed a little courage and said wear the damn masks or stay home?

Masks don't protect the wearer, they protect other folks including us oldsters. Is it too much to ask everyone to try and protect each other....I guess it is.

I’ve gone to Bonefish and Bluefin 6 times and Carrabba’s twice they are keeping the places safe but no place is perfect. I would suggest that if you go to bathroom put your mask on before you go in , there are people who may be at bar inside or out or people off the street coming in to use bathroom, it’s easy to forget that your seating in restaurant is separated, the bathrooms are not

It's quite logical for older people, especially with certain health problems, to be afraid of this virus. The best way to be safe for us is to avoid other people, especially indoors, mask or no mask.

People under 50 have a death rate from this virus less than ordinary flu. So it's logical for them not to be afraid.

The whole mask fiasco started when health authorities first told us they don't work, then switched stance after the peak of pandemic had already been reached. Then, many of the same health authorities blessed massive protests, while still enforcing rules for the rest of us.

Gpsma 06-24-2020 01:32 PM

No mask ever. Not my responsibility to keep u safe. If u are so afraid, dont leave your house. No need to go out, get anything delivered now.

Tired of those that think its my responsibilty to keep them safe

I take care of myself. If you've not taken care of yourself, that is not a concern or worry of mine.

It should be everyone's responsibility to slow the spread of this virus. What are you doing? I wear a mask when social distancing is not guaranteed.

CoachKandSportsguy 06-24-2020 05:16 PM

Of course masks work.
No new COVID-19 cases reported after infected hair stylists exposed 140 clients in Missouri
combined with social distancing to reduce the virus airborne spread. If the majority of spread is airborne from exhaling infected particles, and masks catch a large portion of exhaled air and particulates, why would you not think that masks work? The primary purpose is to reduce the virus particles expelled into the air.

However, when humans are involved, any complex system can be broken due to the individual's cerebral cortex. Everyone's is different, and has differences processing information, safety, and empathy, etc. So try to manage a very large population with information? and this variety of re-actions and behaviors are what happens. But the problem is understanding the risk involved by each individual. Very, very difficult to judge the risk of catching and the risk of not surviving or the risk of damage if surviving. This is the human condition, we all judge risk differently. Darwin non survivors make mistakes in the judgement of risk. Darwin survivors make fewer or smaller mistakes in the judgement of risks. As the risk is difficult to estimate in both areas, being conservative always wins out vs mother nature with healthcare.

As this is a free country, as compared to say China, people who misjudge the risk will most likely fall ill, those that respect the risk for their situation, will have a better chance of survival. Just remember, the long term effects are still unknown, as we haven't even made it out of the pandemic stage yet.

But i bet that you don't take that same approach to drunk driving

So drunk driving is ok by that standard. . . not your responsibility to keep people out of your way, and if you hit them, oh well, not your responsibility.

I guess the whole "love thy neighbor as thyself" thing doesn't apply to you. Or perhaps you just have a pretty profound self-loathing.

Lindsyburnsy 06-24-2020 06:05 PM

Our kids have to go through metal detectors, have shooting drills and wear bullet proof backpacks at school. These kids are developing PTS and people won't put a stupid mask on? Come on, let's get real.

So DUI laws should be abolished and those whose medical conditions adversely affect their driving...should be given their licenses back?

That’s the very definition of SELFISHNESS unless I am mistaken.

It’s just a label, but an appropriate one.

N95 masks do protect the wearer. Why doesn’t government provide these masks for those in the high risk category? Why spend so much on the economy and health services when it would be so much more cost effective and socially acceptable to provide N95 or N99 masks instead? If they need fitting, so what? Dentures need fitting too but we manage it.

Schneil 06-24-2020 11:48 PM

The governor is well aware that the vast majority of people in Florida are either staying home, wearing masks and using other safety measure during this time. Had they not, our numbers would be significantly higher than they are. The statistics and numbers would be unimaginable.Fortunately the governor realizes he doesn't have to "hold everyone accountable" since the majority are following guidelines. Those who are not, are those who are finding themselves in those long lines right now. A mask is most more convenient (and hopefully short term) than a ventilator or connected to an oxygen tank. Be safe, think about yourself, your family and friends.

Are you proud of yourself for not wearing a mask? How about doing your part to slow the spread of this virus. That is the only way America can get back to a normal economy. Don’t you want the economy to recover?

Why do some choose to label those who follow the guidelines as "afraid".
Hence they and all the others that choose to ignore the guidelines....must consider themselves "brave". :ohdear:

Angry Floridians Attack Mandatory Mask Law As Threat To “God’s Wonderful Breathing System”

There was a lot of shouting about masks killing people (they don’t) and calling them the devil and such, but the best moment was hands down the weird quiet lately who said that the commissioners “want to throw God’s wonderful breathing system out the door.”

:ohdear:

Bill32 06-25-2020 10:51 AM

To the non conformist...

Really...what's the big deal? Its different than what we are used to but it's not debilitating to wear a mask when in public. Is it just stubbornness? Not liked being told what to do? Really it's not that difficult to try and do your part to prevent the spread of covid 19.

Don't drink and drive, wear seat belts , don't smoke in public places, don't text and drive you probably don't do these so I ask...what's the big deal?

Velvet 06-25-2020 11:05 AM

Well, the same argument can be used for going naked, clothes are a threat to “God’s wonderful skin system” in fact you can accuse/glorify God of just about anything - who can prove otherwise?

Yeah we get it. You refuse to ever wear a mask, ever. You've said so twice now in this thread.

The question you are being asked is - why not? Why will you refuse to wear a mask? Why is it such a BIG DEAL for you to refuse - not just merely refuse, but to make sure everyone knows you refuse here, twice, in a single thread?

jacksonbrown 06-25-2020 04:29 PM

'Yeah, wearing the mask, it's really a pain. We understand this. It's an irritant. You guys don't have to do it. You don't have to do it. We're not gonna be racist and make you wear a mask.'
