Have noticed over the past few years, there seems to be FAR less 'American Flag Flying' - even in The Villages.

Must be sign of the times - some folks showing their "less patriotic" sides since Nov 2016>>>

Can't be that their flags are worn out...IS IT?

USA TODAY
'We refuse to celebrate': July 4th protesters say not all Americans are free"

CHICAGO — Not all Americans are kicking back to watch fireworks to celebrate independence this holiday weekend.

Amid thousands of protests against police brutality and a pandemic that has disproportionately ravaged communities of color, many people planned to spend Fourth of July drawing attention to what they say is a hypocritical celebration of freedom...

The Independence Day holiday "doesn’t really mean anything when Black people weren't free on July 4th and those same liberties weren't afforded to us," said Kerrigan Williams, co-founder of Freedom Fighters D.C., who has been co-organizing marches in the city for at least three weeks.

"Independence for people of color has not been part of our livelihood. We’re constantly murdered, harassed because of police brutality all over the country. The concept of freedom does not seem to come to our doorstep, even though we've been here 400 years," Yosef said. "We look it as an abomination to recognize anything that comes with the Fourth of July."

We are displaying flags in Sabal Chase but not as many as we are getting older. Thank the media for less pride in being an American.

There is no less pride in America or being American
Thank the media for attempting to make it look and sound like there is less interest.

Your right hopefully ratings will put the media that does this out of business.

They should report the news not shape it to their point of vieew

GOLFER54 07-05-2020 05:12 AM

Well in that case, they obviously will miss out on the celebration that goes along with the holiday, like families getting together, having a BBQ, a few cold beers, enjoying a swimming pool if one has one, watching fireworks, etc. if they prefer to protest rather than enjoy the holiday, their loss.

I don't think it's the media. This comment was made by a poster and said it was his observation, NOT fact.

Max0431Zoe 07-05-2020 06:57 AM

Should have taken a ride to Linden Isles. The entrance, both sides, was lined with flags.

Say it isn't so. How can some survive if not blaming the media (or anyone, for that matter).

Those media folks.....terrible.....quoting people and what they say.....reporting what is said or done. They should be ashamed.

I agree that there is no less pride in America, except maybe if we travel abroad. But I do NOT blame the media. Why do we need a scapegoat?

We need the media to be informed. It is up to each of us to use multiple sources & FACT check.

kendi 07-05-2020 07:35 AM

Seems like more to me.

There is reporting ( or used to be) ,and then there is opinion. Too much of what is billed as news today is opinion. And much of that opinion is Leftist.

davem4616 07-05-2020 07:40 AM

I don't believe polls anymore

further, I could care less what other people's thoughts are on something that I'll be asked to vote on....I make up my own mind and vote how I choose to vote

Luckytwo 07-05-2020 07:47 AM

I came to America 32 years ago on July 4th to escape communism. I celebrate July 4th as my first day of freedom and I am proud to became American.

gatorbill1 07-05-2020 08:04 AM

Not enough American flags - too many political flags

cathell62 07-05-2020 08:15 AM

Its really sad that these special interest groups are only trying to push their cause. You can't change the past. These people need to start living in the present and learn from the past.
Be an AMERICAN. It doesn't matter what color, race, religion, etc you are. We are going to have differences. There is no need for rioting. Any rioters should have the criminal code inflicted on them as their behavior is pathetic.
Every AMERICAN is afforded the same abilities, it matters what you do to advance yourself and stop playing on a past that want die because these groups won't let it. You wonder why racism exists, stop looking in the rear view mirror and make something out of yourself.
If you don't think your in the best country, get out and take your belief with you to some other country. See what reaction you get. This country is too soft on criminals, that's why there is more and more crime. Bring child rearing back to being respectful to others. If there not getting it at home, where is it supposed to come from? You can't get it in the schools as the special interest groups give the students more rights than the teachers whose hands have been tied for too many years. Where is the AMERICAN patriotism in the schools? It doesn't exist any more because we're afraid of offending someone. Again, if you don't like our country, GET OUT!!!

With the Villages being almost 30% VETERANS that you would see many more flags flying every day. Not only veterans should be thankful we live the life we do.
God bless America:coolsmiley:

FredJacobs 07-05-2020 08:19 AM

My 3 foot by 5 foot flag is on display 24/7/365. When the sun goes down, a floodlight comes on so that it is illuminated and seen. I replace it periodically when the colors become faded or tattered from the weather. When that happens, it is folded in the required manner and given to the American Legion for proper disposal. I then proudly display its replacement.

By the way, for all you veterans out there -

It used to be that only members of the American Legion or VFW were authorized to use the military hand salute when honoring the flag. In 2009, the United States Congress passed a bill authorizing all military veterans in civilian clothing to use the military hand salute when the flag passes by in a parade, the Pledge of Allegiance is being recited or any ceremony where the flag is being raised or lowered. In 2013, this was expanded to include the playing of the National Anthem. There is no need to uncover when saluting.

The purpose of this act was to demonstrate the respect that veterans maintain for the flag and for the public to see how many men and women are military veterans. Stand with pride - let the people know that you served.

Spot on Stu....It's the Veterans who honor the American Flag and it's values. It's the Veterans who fought for the Flag to provide the freedoms for those who didn't.

JoeinFL 07-05-2020 09:52 AM

Really?

You don’t have to be a veteran to respect and honor the American flag. It’s not us against them. It’s something that is taught to us by our parents and hopefully passed on to our children and then to theirs.
And a question for you. Does the last part of your post indicate there were/are no people of color in the military?

Fuzz323 07-05-2020 10:24 AM

No, in fact I see more flags out for more holidays and rememberences. At least in the Villages.
I understand the frustration the Black community is making for their plight....but I don't understand their method of expression. Too many want this and want that, but are not trying to correct the problem. It is evident that one of the roots of the problem is the 'fatherless family' setting, not slave owners from 200 years ago. The US politicians have been throwing law after law and entitlement after entitlement at the problem but little has changed, in fact much has become worse since many of the entitlements become a 'free' crutch for their existance. If racism is so rampant in the US, why have so many Black citizens become so well entrenched and successful in our society....even those from very poor back grounds? The riots and looting and burning just undermines any thing that is being said. Singling out the 'bad cops' as the reason for their actions is no more authentic than singling out the bad criminal members of the Black community as the norm. When both sides have open discussion and stop calling each other names, progress can over come.

Flags flying everywhere on Bando Lane in Santiago!

I thank the media for constantly uncovering so much corruption. I have not seen one word on the cable stations I watch stating there are fewer flags being waved. Manipulation.

Unfortunately, some prominent media (yes, CNN for sure) create the news rather than report the news. They are horrible.

JoMar 07-05-2020 07:23 PM

I'm not convinced those protesting and frankly, the younger generations have a clue what the 4th represents. I believe those of color finally are starting to be heard but not sure what they believe they would have (or any of us actually) if July 4th 1776 had not happened.

Love2Swim 07-05-2020 07:57 PM

I cannot believe that people equate flying a flag with patriotism. I always thought patriotism was more about being a good, informed citizen, voting in every election.

Bill1701 07-06-2020 06:28 AM

Flying the flag doesn't make you patriotic anymore than wearing a cross makes you a Christian.
