Digital Villages resident ID

Anyone know if there are any plans for a digital ID for the phone so we don’t have to carry around the physical ID.

Or is a picture on your phone of your ID sufficient for pools, recreation centers etc.

I think this is a good suggestion, Apple iPhones have a Wallet already and it can hold boarding tickets for airlines. So I think the Villages could come up with something. I think a photo would work for the scanners at the rec centers, but a minor problem might be sending a photo to non-Villagers. Good idea though.

retiredguy123 08-09-2020 11:32 AM

A photo of your ID card is not acceptable. You must present the actual ID card.

PaulinTV 08-09-2020 11:34 AM

Not sure about future plans, I would vote a resounding YES!!!!
However we were told by one employee when we forgot ours at the pool that a picture of it was not accepted, couldn't hurt if in a bind, but try to more mindful. My personal issue with the picture is I can never find it on my phone unless I remember the date I took it.

I think that is a great idea. They should have both options, some people might not like using their phones like that. Some people don’t like putting too much personal stuff on their phones. And speaking of security in a way. I am wondering what the point is of having gates when they have it posted to “USE YOUR GATE CARD OR PRESS RED BUTTON TO ENTER”!! Anyone & Everyone can come in, so why have gates at all? I have heard about the “red” button duct didn’t think they would advertise it? Just wondering what the logic of that is?

Two responses. First, I agree they should always have the option of having an actual non digital ID. I for one do not like having my phone surgically attached to me. I rarely bring my phone with me unless I am expecting an important call. Carrying an ID in my money clip is way easier than lugging around a phone. I never bring my phone on a golf course. I am playing golf, not working, and it is extremely inconsiderate to fellow golfers to have your phone making noises while golfing.

Second, the gates have two important purposes. Most importantly, they help automobile and golf cart traffic co-exist. In many places, without the gates slowing cars, it would be very dangerous for golf carts. Also, the gates slow down cars so security cameras can get a picture of each cars license plate. If a crime is committed and a witness can identify an associated automobile, the owner of the vehicle
can be easily identified.

Velvet 08-09-2020 01:02 PM

I like the idea of digital village ID as acceptable beside the paper one. Gates are not for security but to slow cars to give golf carts a chance to get by, ie. Traffic control. Why do people keep thinking the gates are for security reasons?

Oh Thank You I never thought about it that way regarding controlling the speed of cars versus golf carts. First time living in a golf cart community. And I did not realize pictures were being taken. Thanks for the info! ☺️

It's to give the appearance of a gated community.

The entry gates could work like the exit ones. You have to slow down and come to crawl waiting for the gate to open, it would be just as effective as using a card.

I vote for scamming chip to be installed under the skin.:ohdear:

This is construction mode in the south and works great without using a card or button.

The card/button is redundant and an unnecessary expense.

I’ve never rented out my place so I don’t know, but do you have to surrender your ID when you turn your house over to renters? If so, then having a picture of your ID on your phone should not be a valid ID.

bowlingal 08-10-2020 05:38 AM

Here in the villages is NOT a true gated community. vendors do not have gate passes, therefore, must use the red button. Also true for visitors

Rosebud1949 08-10-2020 05:55 AM

I will NOT buy a fancy phone just to have my ID card on.........Just another item for the scammers, and hackers to get hold of. Many villagers are NOT permanently attached to their phones like some. Slowing to swipe a card, or slowing for an automatic opening is fine.

I asked why they don't allow a digital version of the ID, the answer is that a digital version could be copied and it would take longer for someone to look at it to verify that it is real you. It could be photoshopped with a different picture.

I always carry my phone on the golf course. I am glad I do. Needed it to call the clubhouse when my golfing partner collapsed from the heat...and that was up north! She needed to get to air-conditioning quickly. Wouldn’t golf without it now. I silence it so it doesn’t bother me or anyone else.

Correct. It would be so easy to put my photo onto your ID card for a cell phone record. I have wondered why the system used when we check in doesn't provide a photo to the rec center or golf employee. As it is now you could flash any green plastic card when you check in for golf at the exec courses. If instead when you gave your name there would be a pop up of your photo on the screen verification would be cleaner.

Of course they could also program the system so that when you were within 30 days of needing to pay your annual trail fee you'd get a notice by email and when you used the online reservation system to make a tee time.

I would rather have digital /scanning at the gates. Barcode on your windshield is read and the gate opens

Slowing down all traffic at the gates allows for better pictures of the vehicles and passengers. So SMILE!

I thought the gates were to keep us old folks from wandering off :)

Dana1963 08-10-2020 07:48 AM

I have a phone case that carries credit cards. If it’s that important to carry cell phone why not carry ID and driver’s license.

PanamaKim 08-10-2020 08:14 AM

Photo of our Resident ID Card on your Phone

Last summer I was constantly forgetting my ID card when we played bridge at one of the rec centers (often left it in the pool bag). I took a photo of the ID card and the lady that scans it accepted it and it scanned. Now, maybe she recognized me since we saw each other weekly. But my point is: take a picture of your ID and store it in your photos in a place you can easily find it. That way, if you forget your card, you have a back up that will likely be accepted, especially if you have secondary ID on you. I find those scanning ID’s use good discretion, at least in the off-season. I’ve been given a pass on through when I’ve forgotten my card. I appreciate them not being hard a$$es abut it.

Ronnieslager 08-10-2020 09:01 AM

As a renter in the Villages, NOT having a digital ID is like living in the 1930s. They should have options for people.

charlottesweb 08-10-2020 09:24 AM

Create an album so you Can find it quickly. I have one called paperwork where I keep photo of DL, passport, villages ID etc Makes it easy to locate

Not at all. Anyone who is fooled into thinking The Villages is gated doesn't belong here in the first place.
Being a completely gated community would have also had the advantage of slowing down traffic, but it comes with a huge price tag in the form of street maintenance.

When we were up north we had transponders on the windshield if all resident. When you approach the gate it automatically opens, you don’t have to roll your window down and stretch to get close enough to reach the gate sensor. The transponder was small, less than a credit card and also almost paper thin. Very convenient!!

ctmurray 08-10-2020 11:52 AM

A fully gated community is not possible in Sumter Co

Besides the issue of slowing cars for golf cart safety, and the license plate picture, there is the issue that the roads in Sumter County are owned by the county. You can't legally make a fully gated community unless you own the roads. In Marion County the roads are owned by the CDD and could be gated but they chose not to have this for several reasons. One is that FEMA won't reimburse any clean up in a gated community.

When did you move in?? They had a local veterinarian doing it at our closing, but we had a choice— didn’t want a barcode tattoo on my arm! All good. I don’t photograph well anyway. Just like EZ and SunPass- I think they’ll eventually be accepted as UNIVERSAL ID

some may like this...others will be happy with what exists today

pcacace 08-10-2020 05:29 PM

I worry about losing it between the car and the golf cart. They should accept a picture scan just like the stores do for coupons.
