Kitchen Soffits. How are yours decorated?

Hubs has taken down all my stuff again and I have washed it all and I want a new look.

Anyone want to share their kitchen soffit scene?

Less is more. And safer! When I see large platters and vases up top, I think it looks nice but dangerous to keep clean. I personally don't like artificial plants dangling down. I have considered adding above cabinet lighting.

we're in Gilchrist, our home built in 2014. We don't like clutter - but simple, tasteful, different things. I like my flying horse the best...

I have sculptures collected from my two favorite Michigan artists. Four are whimsical birds done in ceramic with metal plumes, legs, and goofy shoes, and then in metal are a bicyclist and a dog. Guess which kind of dog. It's all rather whimsical and probably wouldn't go well in your more formal home, Gracie. I had pictures but they're on an old computer. Or phone. Or somewhere...

I went to home goods, bought a bunch of things I liked. Put them up and only had to return one urn. Used some greens but like the other poster, I don't like flowing vines. I also have puck lights that operate by remote. Looks beautiful at night.

Also check out YouTube for tutorials from professional decorators.

how do you get up there & clean, do you use a ladder? i have to climb on top of the counters to get a decent clean job. most of the time it's ok except when arthritis is acting up.

Who installed your lights?

Dust. I like it and you do not have to wash it. Make believe it's a new decorating idea LOL who knows it might catch on. Call them dust bunnies

We have trays that we collected from our travels, many are more like works of art. I think decorating with meaningful items when you can is always better than chotskies.

I was told by a decorator less is best which I prefer as well. The older I get the simpler I like things. 3 items of interest to you was her suggestion.

Regardless of how much space you have? I think you should use whatever makes you happy. I want my house to look like a home not a page from a magazine.

For what it's worth, I did a lot of Googling before I decided what to do. I found a lot of cool ideas on the Houzz website. Here's what I ended up with.

Deb call Dave Wilt. He was an electrician before he moved to Central Florida. 352-470-7917

We just put up rope lights also. Easy peasy if you have an outlet up there.

Jane's birdhouse collection. LED light-strips illuminate the houses at night. Artificial greenery adds to attractiveness.

Gracie We filled in all the soffit gaps to create a cohesive soffit when we stretched our kitchen 4ft. We installed Crown Molding on the bottom of the soffit. We installed up lighting in the Crown, under the cabinet lighting, LED mini spots and lighting in the fan. We filled the room with light which doesn't need to be dusted. We use a pole Swiffer to dust the top. Len & Mary

I do love the less is more idea, and when I come to my house in TV it is such a good feeling . BUT..... My home in NY I have so many collectables that I know I don't want to display when I make the permanent move. It's so much easier keeping the house clean. As far as over the cabinets, I do plan to bring all my over the cabinet displays and greenery. I do love the look, for I do love that tuscan decor. What ever makes you happy , thats what you should do.

I’m a country girl! This is the look that makes me happy!🌻

gpkk_2000 08-23-2020 03:20 PM

I love that. My countertops only have the essentials: Toaster, coffee pot and box of kleenex. My mom & grandma had stuff all over, not my thing. However, I do like well planned and neat countertop displays.

graciegirl 08-23-2020 03:26 PM

Thank you for sharing the pictures of your beautiful decor. I am amazed and delighted but not at all surprised by your good taste and welcoming choices.

I love each and every one of them.

Nice post and I completely agree with you. I have too much stuff and I really do not mind what anyone else thinks. Everything I have means something to me, reminds me of somewhere we lived or traveled.

Of course less is more and when my house goes up for sale it will have less, a whole lot less, but for now I am living with my stuff and enjoying it. :icon_wink:

GG .... do what makes you happy, live for yourself not others.
