Centurylink massive outage

I use Centurylink for internet and woke up to It not working. After much resetting of everything went on line and they have a massive nationwide problem so if you use them no use calling the whole Country is experiencing a big problem. They are based in La where the hurricane hit but have no idea if it is connected

F16 1UB 08-30-2020 08:19 AM

Was on hold for 40 min

Foreign speaking voice says “Hello, Hello, Hello”....kept answering them then immediate dial tone. :censored::censored:

FromDC 08-30-2020 08:26 AM

Downdetector.com shows outage map and many, many angry comments.

I called around 0715 am was advised outage and would be restored by 1130. Arrived home after golf 11am was working, minor road block on the highway of life.

Dana1963 08-30-2020 05:16 PM

Just about every internet provider was down during the same period.

How did u go on line to find out out widespread outage? It would hv save me trying to get them for hrs. I had internet when I first got up, very early riser, then 1-2hrs later went down. Saw this reflected on my modem. Of course I tried calling tech serv for the next sev hrs but did not get through until around noon when their recording said IP prob resolved. All the time I’ve had century link , I rearly hv a prob.

We finally got disgusted with CenturyLink in early July. Switched to Xfinity and we couldn't be happier with the service.

As a CenturyLink customer, we were limited to 25 MBPS download/1MBPS upload because we were on a double DSL line. It was costing ~$92 per month with a land line.

I called in late June to drop the land line and was told my rate would drop to ~$68 per month, but my internet download speed would be limited to 10 MBPS. That was enough for me.

Switched to Xfinity internet only for $40 per month and I'm reliably receiving 100 MBPS download and 5 MBPS upload.

All our internet provider do is provide a connection to the internet. They do not maintain the servers. US hands internet control to ICANN this happened in 2016

I found out quickly about the widespread outage by using my cellphone that uses Verzon for Internet access. I googled CenturyLink and saw there were outage issues. Also, went to Downdetector.com to get more info. I never bothered calling since they knew they had a problem!

Iget those all the time. Robo call. If no one answers after the 1st hello, hang up.

The service and cost inconsistencies of these providers are amazing. I left Xfinity because my charges were absurdly expensive and I wasn't getting anywhere near your quoted speeds. I switched TO CenturyLink with their twisted pair service for $49 per month. I average around 30 MBPS, which I find is more than adequate for our use.

World wide issue....must have been hacks from Russia..China..N. Korea..Iran..??..:faint:

Has the cause been released yet?
BTW it was not only Centurylink that was affected.

charlieo1126@gmail.com 08-31-2020 08:30 AM

Data plan on my smart phone.

newgirl 08-31-2020 09:48 AM

I just got it and my service has been ****ty from day 1. I thought it was because too many people at once we're using it but now it's inky been me and it shuts down and needs buffering all the time.

newgirl 08-31-2020 09:49 AM

$49? I was told $65 basic?

NavyVet 08-31-2020 12:56 PM

We have Spectrum. No issues this morning. I just did a speed test and clocked 73 mbps WIRELESS.

There is only automated service for centurylink on weekends. Mine was out but got thru to automated system to find out about the outage. It was back up and running by 1 pm without issues. Don’t know if this was “isolated” incident -FL, east coast, or entire southeast.

$49 is for basic, "up to 100 mbps"
$69 is for high speed, "up to 940 mbps".

Before the outage, I was getting 700 to 740 mbps on my laptop, according to the Century Link speed test. Since then, I am at 35 to 40 mbps on the laptop. Tech came and said my laptop is not capable of operating 5g speeds like 700 to 740. Couldn't explain why I could get them two days ago. The ONLY thing that changed was Century Link's outage. Our TV, which we use a Roku on, is connected to the 5g network, so we are not getting any buffering. That is why I got the high speed, so I guess I'm okay with it. I don't think I need those kinds of speed on my laptops anyway.
Oh, and before I upgraded myself to the high speed, my TV buffered a lot at the "up to 100 mbps" that I had before.

mmignosa 08-31-2020 07:21 PM

Same here. Rebooted twice. The light was blinking red I.p.o. green. I sent a note to my neighbors I know have CenturyLink. Same thing no connection. I stopped rebooting and waited. I know it was off as I asked Alexa to shut off the light. She couldn’t do it. Sigh I had to go over and shut off the light manually. 😁
