Chip in car windshield

Traveling to close to a ballast truck, ping small chip in windshield. Any recommendations where to get it fixed?

bagboy 09-03-2020 04:04 PM

Notify your insurance company. They will advise you

John41 09-03-2020 04:16 PM

I used Safelite twice as recommended by my insurance company. Toyota wanted $1300 whereas Safelite did it for $350, both new windshields. If a dollar bill covers the crack it can be repaired otherwise has to be replaced.

Image result for florida law for windshield replacement
In the state of Florida, windshield cracks and chips are repaired free of charge. According to Florida statute 627.7288, if you have comprehensive coverage on your vehicle your insurance company will pick up the tab for any repair or replacement that you may need. The law states that your deductible will be waived.

OpusX1 09-03-2020 05:25 PM

Safelite Repaired our chip with no cost to us. We went to Ocala with a appointment, in and out under a hour.

Bjeanj 09-03-2020 05:28 PM

If it’s not in your “field of vision”, can’t you just get the chip filled?

davem4616 09-03-2020 06:32 PM

most insurance companies will cover this with no charge to you...and someone will come to you to pull out the old windshield and replace it with a new one. Don't delay...driving with a cracked windshield is a hazard

village dreamer 09-03-2020 06:52 PM

you can buy a window chip repair kit from any car part shop , about $20. i did my window and it came out great.

Did you not have comprehensive insurance? That doesn't sound right. WORSE CASE (if you are insured from out of FL) you'd only pay the deductible. Lower comp deductibles are very cheap. It was $18/yr difference from $500ded to $100ded and the comp itself is cheap.

Insurance paid it but that was the difference in the bill between Safelight and Toyota just to show the large difference in cost. Insurance company said I could use Toyota if I wanted. The other time was a chipped motorhome window that had to be replaced. And one time Safelight repaired a chip not in the line of vision. The test was whether a dollar bill covered the crack.

tophcfa 09-03-2020 09:49 PM

I had a small chip repaired and about two months later the repair failed and cracked. Save yourself the hassle and put a 7 iron to the small chip so you can just get a new windshield and be done with it.

Gmaf6 09-04-2020 04:59 AM

Called State Farm and they gave us a number to call....Safelite came to our home and repaired the windshield.

Safelite came to our house and the insurance covered all of it. Took less than two hours.

bhferri85 09-04-2020 05:13 AM

Safelite twice. Came to the house. No charge either time. Insurance covered all costs.

Jima64 09-04-2020 05:39 AM

Safelite came to our home and fixed it. Very professional and friendly and quality work.

Mimi0808 09-04-2020 06:21 AM

Your insurance company will send you to the right place, but for me the best has been Safelite AutoGlass, they came to my house and replaced it free of charge. Good luck.

dnobles 09-04-2020 06:27 AM

Safe lite came right to our house. Excellent job. Over 3 years ago and still good. We paid out of pocket. I think it was $80

La lamy 09-04-2020 06:47 AM

I bought a windshield repair kit and did it myself. Really easy and cheap. No insurance hassle.

Same for us. You must have comprehensive and in Florida, comprehensive MUST include ALL glass damage with no deductible. In our case Satellite billed my insurance about $60-70 as I remember. 90 minute job by the Ocala franchise, don't in my driveway. Lifetime guarantee, if the chipper-re-appears or you are not satisfied with the job, they replace the entire windshield and bill your insurance company (as long as you don't change companies).

Skip

Safelite repair, Safelite replace.

Dust Bunny 09-04-2020 07:59 AM

Windshield

Your probably covered by insurance. They generally replace it but you must make sure you include deductable. ALso bessure it is OEM glass. They sometimes try to install lesser quality.

greenflash245 09-04-2020 08:16 AM

best plan

greenflash245 09-04-2020 08:17 AM

then quit tailgating!!!!!!!

NoMoSno 09-04-2020 08:18 AM

I've noticed FL is lax in issuing tickets for unsecured/covered loads.
Beware if traveling near "Dirt Cheap" on 441.
I've seen mesh trailers loaded with gravel leaving there....:22yikes:

I’m sure you thought you were being funny, rather than seriously suggesting someone commit insurance fraud, right?

habjmb@yahoo.com 09-04-2020 09:20 AM

We had the same incident. Safe Lite Glass came to our house. It was very cheap and they did a great job

anpo532 09-04-2020 10:22 AM

Yes. Safelight came to my house and fix a ding in my windshield in 2004. It is still fixed.

bpascani 09-04-2020 10:45 AM

my insurance covers those repairs with no deductable

Giolinh 09-04-2020 11:02 AM

If a very small chip and not in field of vision, just buy an inexpensive repair "kit" from an auto supplies dealer

ggdawg 09-04-2020 11:30 AM

I had same experience with Safelite. Outstanding service with a smooth process.

We had same thing happen to our brand new car. We called our insurance co and they sent us to Saflite in Ocala. They did a wonderful job and our insurance co paid the entire bill

You’re exactly right Red Tail! When we lived in Florida & I got a small spider crack (a little chip with very small 1/4” cracks around it) in my windshield, it was fixed for FREE. We presently live in Texas & had a drivers door glass shattered, fixed for FREE. Here in Texas, Ins. never got involved. They just said NO CHARGE!

Insurance covers it since a road hazard and they come to you. Call tbem or look online for a windshield repair place in our area and ask them how to handle.

thelegges 09-23-2020 05:52 PM

Just had our larger than a golf ball chunk within site. Insurance sent safelight. Windshield replaced in 94 minutes, then taken out for a drive to set the cameras, and alarms. One hour later got an email with a certified statement that the windshield and all cameras had been calibrated to factory set

You proved your ignorance unless you were’nt insured,Thdn you doubled down on it!

mopper 09-23-2020 09:17 PM

Safelight came to my house fixed it through insurance, no cost to me. Great service. Thanks for everyones advice.

Neils 09-24-2020 05:17 AM

For cars with “rain sensing” technology and antennas built into the glass, OEM can cost Up to $1,500, aftermarket brand $400 (both from Safelite). Be sure aftermarket brand will allow your cars features to all work properly.

jdulej 09-24-2020 06:13 AM

In one year we had 3 new windshields - one on one car, two on the other replaced. In all cases I insisted on OEM replacements which the insurance covered 100% (1 on Mercedes, 2 on a Mini). The damage always was caused by rocks kicked up on Interstate 75 or 10, not local roads.

When I renewed my insurance I was surprised to find that Progressive called out these 3 events and added $50.00 to my semi-annual premium. I did not dispute this (just lazy) so I'm not sure if they can be successfully challenged.

inda50 09-24-2020 06:13 PM

I understand it will be fixed for free-- no fault
