Darryls Diner

Anyone wanna meet me there for breakfast? Which concerns you more? Covid 19 or the recent disclosures about sanitation violations?

The violations were very bad. Staying far away!

Just stay away poor management if they can’t even keep the employee wash sink in operation, clean microwave be thankful for county food inspectors!

So far (according to the "other" news site) Bichara Blvd (Lady Lake) and Southern Trace.

Some highlights from the 2 locations per the V News:
A spray bottle containing a toxic substance that was not labeled. (That is scary).

There was raw animal food stored over ready-to-eat food in a walk-in cooler.

The inspector also found that there was no soap at an employee hand-wash station.

The hand-wash sink for employees was not available due to items being stored in the sink.

At least there were no roaches or animal droppings, just don't spray the grill with an unlabeled spray bottle of toxic substance by mistake.

No worse than the average Chinese take out....

bagboy 09-29-2020 05:11 PM

I don't make excuses for anyone BUT, I can tell you we have been to Darrells on Wedgewood Ln several times, and probably due to Covid they are extremely shorthanded. Max two servers, one cook, and maybe a busser. They work very hard, they do the best they can, and there are probably some things that get overlooked. I'll leave it at that...

ficoguy 09-29-2020 05:13 PM

No meow mix in the corned beef hash?

davem4616 09-29-2020 05:17 PM

so, so disappointing to learn of a small business that hasn't been taking care of business earned a negative
...everyone loses when this happens

satisfying the routine board of health inspections (if that is what it was) is fundamental stuff

Topspinmo 09-29-2020 05:26 PM

Very few restaurants pass pop in inspection. If you knew what went on behind closed doors At some you would eat TV dinners at home? Then again, Do we really know how there made and what in TV dinners? Nothing beats fresh cooked breakfast at home, or lunch, or dinner.

ficoguy 09-29-2020 05:32 PM

Mama Leone's in NYC....gawd, they had rats in the kitchen that could stare down a bob cat

trav 09-30-2020 04:47 AM

There is never an excuse for sanitation violations of that magnitude.

Garwood1 09-30-2020 05:28 AM

Having been certified in food safety at the state level , those violations are easily reversed and are the result of everyone being in a hurry , they are serious if continue daily but in reality are very minor fixes that can easily be remedied in a matter of minutes, so I’d not be afraid to eat there because I’m sure they have been corrected within minutes of the check, temp violations are extremely more serious as are pest infestation

drgoofy 09-30-2020 05:32 AM

Restaurant inspection grades

In other states where I have lived, I have been able to view the most recent inspection grade posted on the entrance of the establishment. Since moving to FL, I have looked carefully and have not seen a grade on any restaurant entrance.

Neither one concerns me. I think Darrell‘s is one of the best breakfast places in the villages. Really good food and priced very moderately. If you don’t like them go somewhere else! Easy!

Dilligas 09-30-2020 06:05 AM

One begets the other. Today, a restaurant must be squeaky clean to even be open for 25% occupancy to avoid virus infections between customers. To flunk, after being closed for so long says there’s a management problem.

Northerner52 09-30-2020 06:26 AM

From Darrell himself

From Darrell email to me: I do see how disturbing this sounds, Although I can assure you that it is made to sound worse than it actually was.
We use a RTU (ready to use) sanitizer for our tables and food service areas. One of our servers made up some vinegar water in an empty bottle to clean windows with and did not properly change the label but was not using that for sanitation purposes.
The thing that they do not post is the very next day when the inspector returned it was graded 100% with Zero violations.

Darryl is a good guy hires mostly felons and druggies.

banjobob 09-30-2020 06:30 AM

At last a sane comment , compared to the “Hair on Fire” from the ones that have only had experience of eating a restaurant.

aces_04 09-30-2020 06:32 AM

I eat at the Pinella Plaza Location. The management is super, food is great and staff pays attention to their customers.

These are minor violations and can be fixed in minutes.

Us too, used to seeing grades in the windows back in Calif. Has always bothered us here that they are not posted. Wish it was the rule in every state.

Was there yesterday still my favorite place to go

noslices1 09-30-2020 06:58 AM

I had breakfast at Darrell’s diner in Pinellas Plaza last week. Best breakfast burrito I’ve had in a long time. The place was clean and the servers all had masks, so I shall be back.

I won’t be meeting you —never liked Darrell’s anyway

COVID — food poisoning is yucky but it doesn’t kill you, I’m 88 years old —good chance I’d die from COVID

They use the image of a dog in their logo. Nuff said!!

Kerry Azz 09-30-2020 08:09 AM

A disgusting place to go to. I’ll never go there!

Joe C. 09-30-2020 08:15 AM

I think Darrell's is the best place in the Villages for breakfast. I've been all over the world, and let me tell you .. Darrell's has the BEST BACON in the world! And onions in the homefries?. Fantastic !! (but you have to order them that way).
Cleanliness ? Just fine for me. (A good clue of kitchen cleanliness is by checking the rest rooms. Clean rest room = clean kitchen.)
Covid?? not worried about it one bit.
I'll be at Darrell's (SS) tomorrow for sure.

Bjeanj 09-30-2020 08:31 AM

I saw that report, and agree that the issues are easily fixable. Next day re-inspection shows this was just a blip that I am willing to overlook. I plan on eating there soon.

I've eaten breakfast in a few of the Darrell's before playing golf. Never witnessed anything but the employees cleaning after customers, keeping the restrooms and kitchen clean. Never gotten bad service or bad food there.:)

1couple 09-30-2020 08:46 AM

Didn’t care for it before

For the quality of the food and the service and price we will never go back

Obvious systemic problems caused by unconcerned management. Have lost my wife and I as customers.
