'Ding Dong' ice cream vehicles at TV?
Does TV have 'Ding Dong' ice cream vehicles on the side streets?
I know they're usually in suburbs where there are kids, but hey...adults like ice cream, too! :coolsmiley: Maybe that could be my part-time job when we move there. Yeah, 'Gene the Ding Dong Driver." Gene & Kathy Cincinnati, OH TV wannabes who WILL be at TV Aug. 28> for a week. We hope to meet a lot of you while we're there. |
Nope... there's no soliciting in the various villages. There are plenty of fantastic ice cream and custard shops you can indulge in, though.
|
If an Ice Cream truck began playing his loud circus music in the Villages I will shoot him. On LI we have 3 ice cream men who play blaring music that you can hear 5 blocks away. I have complained about the noise to the Town of Islip and they won't do nothing about it. One of the reason I want to get out of town. My vote. NO ICE CREAM MAN!!! And like Ooper says, "There are plenty of fantastic ice cream and custard shops you can indulge in."

Ditto Tom. We live in a neighborhood that is still building and we look forward to the day when all the traffic is gone. A dinging bell or music on the street would not be a welcome addition to the block. |
Do any of you remember the "Yummy Man" who had his wares in a big ice chest thingy on the front of his tricycle? I don't think there was any music involved.
I can see that we kids all had different names for the mobile bringer of ice cream. |
some of the ic stores even deliver large quantities to neighborhood groups with advance notice. I know Bruster's does this on occasion for sure.
|
I have never seen an ice cream truck in the Villages...
...but have been stuck behind one a few times while running errands in Lady Lake. Lady Lake borders the Villages at the northeast as well as some on the east side. Some of the Villages is also in Lady Lake.

This, again, raises a good point of law discussion. The Villages streets are public streets. Paid for by the taxpayers of Marion, Sumter and Lake counties. The Villages is not a gated community with private streets.
How could a "no solicitation" rule, enacted by The Villages, be enforced on public streets. The street in front of your house is no different than the street in downtown Orlando, or downtown Lady Lake. The gates are only for show. The Villages, it would seem, has no authority to enact any restrictions on public property. Private property? Yes, Public property? NO. I'm not in favor of Ice Cream trucks zooking around with music tinking either, but I'm wondering when and if this no "solicitation rule" will be tested. I'm thinking it will be tested the first time a candidate for public office knocks on your door. |
I know when they were building our village, the sandwich truck came down every day with sandwiches, drinks, etc and no one complained.
|
NY=Bungalow Bar & Good Humor. How about the Jelly Apples/Marshmalloiws right out of the copper pots? $.02 or 2 for $.03. JA= $.05.
|
I'm sure the sandwich truck didn't play blaring music that could be heard from five blocks away.
|
If an ice cream truck is allowed to tour the Village neighborhoods, The Villages and everything it stands for will be destroyed.

On the other hand, since I gave up the hootch over 4 years ago my taste for ice cream has expanded. (so has my waist) :pepper2: |
Just how many people are home throughout the day, anyhow? Some neighborhoods have many seasonal residents. Full timers may be out playing, shopping, away on vacation. Also, the novelty of an ice cream truck will wear off especially with that blaring bell, music or whatever is used to announce the arrival of the ice cream truck.

TH is correct. We all want to keep our streets private. Me too. Problem is, they are not private. Just pull up to any gate and see what happens. You don't have to say a word to those with attendants. At those which are unattended just push the red button. The gate goes up. There are many gated communities with private streets. TV is not one of them. |
You have to go through the county business licensing procedures and abide by their rules and then you have the zoning regulations in each specific area.
|
sigh.
I will just go to Publix and get my popsicles and ice cream bars. |

Publix frozen yogurt is just like eating real ice cream. And if you eat enough of it, it will put on real fat just like real ice cream. JLK |

Don't forget about the Carvel trucks! I sold Good Humor circa 1965 for about 3 summers on Manhattan Beach, Brooklyn, NY. Just don't think there will be much demand in TV for a truck. Maybe I should buy a four seat golf cart and put in a freezer chest and then... I don't think so... |
I doubt of the ice cream trucks would be economically feasible...
...here in the Villages. Not enough people around in many neighborhoods during the Summer months along with many people out and about most of the day golfing, swimming, playing tennis, softball, etc.

Smoothies and shaved ice
Quote:
Now that's an idea! But it would have to be an electric golf cart. Don't want to "stink up" the shaved ice with gas fumes! <g> Gene....so much for my idea of a TV part-time job driving the Ding Dong truck. :cryin2: |

Vendor response: Get lost ya old geezer, this is a public street. And take a Dreamsicle wit ya. . |
instead of ice cream truck how about a coffee truck that comes around early in the day
|
Is there anyone in TV that doesn't have a coffee pot? In NY= coffee trucks were called roach coaches. We don't need horns honking early in the morning waking everyone up.

Carvel Ice-Cream
I was so excited because someone told me that there is a Carvel Ice Cream shop near the Villages. Well, I found the phone number and it is disconnected. Also looked for the store but couldn't find it.
Does anyone know anything about it? I love and miss my Carvel! ALMetJet- I used to go to Manhattan Beach and buy the Good Humor Bars- maybe you sold me one :) |
Sweetie, who is the person in our family who brings home the sweet goodies, found a box of 30 Good Humor ice creams at the Meijer store here in Ohio.
It had 10 cones, 10 sandwiches and 10 ice cream bars. It didn't take long for the three of us to polish them off. I don't believe I have ever had Good Humor brand before and it was VERY good. Is Good Humor an East Coast thing??? |

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Good_Humor They had big distribution facilities in New York. There were trucks in all five boroughs. Had the concessions out the Brooklyn beaches. I mentioned I worked for them 45 years ago getting 15% commission on a $0.15 ice cream bar! Best day I had sold over $200 as I hit a camp spending a day at the beach. Those were the days. I wonder if they still make the super humor a chocolate candy bar inside of the vanilla ice cream bar covered in chocolate. That was a quarter. |
An ice cream truck in The Villages may not be profitable. but wouldn't it be nice to have a truck deliver bread and milk and other "run out to the store" items along with prepared entrees just like we get in Publix deli? I know I myself could keep them in business:thumbup:

'Ring-ring' goes my ice cream-packed golf cart
OK, I guess the "paid-for" Ding Dong ice cream truck idea at TV is out. Not enough customers, or the Village Police will throw me in the clink for TV solicitation. OK, OK...I get the message <g>.
So, I guess I'll just have to be Mr. Nice Guy, don my Ding Dong cap, and deliver "free ice cream" in an iced chest on the back of my golf cart. Don't worry. I won't approach with strong music, or a loud DING DONG sound. I'll just quietly press a little 'ring-ring' buzzer on my steering wheel. I'll betcha Gracie comes flying out of her house to be my first customer. How will she recognize me? Because, as I said, I'll be donning my Ding Dong cap. Spirited Gene |
If nothing else, Gene, your original post did draw attention. I may have been one of the strongest fighters against your suggestion but since you'll be delivering free ice cream in silence, I'll place my order now for a double scoop of Vanilla Fudge with hot choclate and sprinkles. Don't tell the IRS but I may toss you a few $$$ as a tip.

Sprinkles are 'extra'
Tom,
The ice cream is free. The sprinkles are extra <g>. 'ring-ring' from my Ding Dong cart, Gene |

We had Good Humor Trucks in the Chgo burbs in the 50's & 60's. . |
Once upon a time in our NY suburb the Good Humor truck came to our neighborhood but not near enough for our children.
Somehow my husband persuaded him to make a biweekly run to our house when we would buy a box of Toasted Almond and a box of whatever the kids fancied that week. He did it for years. P.S. At that time we got milk delivery. Those were the days |
As a kid in the NY 'burbs, we had an ice cream man, milkman, bread man, laundry man, all making home delivery. That's going back a few years, <G>. I remember as a little guy the bread man teaching me to carry a loaf of bread without squashing it or a pie without sticking my thumb through the top crust. Truly a simpler, easier time to live.
|
Don't forget the Dugan man who delivered the fresh chocolate coverred donuts
