TV repair

Have an 8 year old LG LCD tv. Randomly the screen will go black but have sound. Turn it back on and it does it all over again. Some days no problem. Worth fixing??
Now this is not a tech savvy houshold. For installation of a new tv, and set up with cable and blueray player would you recommend Bob's TV or Villager Audio?
TIA

villagetinker 10-13-2020 09:48 AM

For an 8 year old TV, I would say do not bother, house call will be at least $80, parts if still available probably a couple of hundred dollars, and then the installation fee. You did not mention the size, but i just bought a 75 inch, 4k smart TV at best but for $750 and what ever the tax was. This was to replace a 3 year old Vizio that had a failure of the back light and could not be repaired!

bagboy 10-13-2020 09:49 AM

IMO, definitely not worth fixing. I recommend Tom at Villagers AV.

retiredguy123 10-13-2020 11:44 AM

Not worth fixing. I would buy a new TV from Best Buy, and have them deliver and set it up. They will set up a 56 inch or larger TV for $150, or mount it on a wall and set it up for $200. No need to hire a third party.

No, Tv’s are cheap, cost more to repair than new one unless you get 4 or 5 foot one. Circuit over heating causing problem. I had 55” LG new about same time frame it blackout in year. In my case it was under warranty and they replaced the defective circuit board. IMO you was luckily if lasted 8 years.

All most always the problem is the power supply capacitors. If you go to eBay and type is your brand and model # with capacitors you will see a kit for 25 bucks.

That said I have no doubt anyone reading this will do this for this simple repair.

Great advice. Thanks.

Tvs are cheap. Just buy another. And Vizio is a lousy brand. It doesnt last longer than a year

J1ceasar 10-14-2020 05:40 AM

Do not buy westinghouse. The warranty is crap

Alas, I am sorry to tell you that Consumers Report considers five years to be a good life for a flat screen television. If you get more, count your blessings. For the sizes I buy, that would work out to about a hundred dollars a year. Compared to what I pay for WiFi and telephone, that’s nothing. I just feel bad about putting a sick one in a landfill. Excuse me—an incinerator.

JoelJohnson 10-14-2020 06:11 AM

Did you try to Google the problem?

noslices1 10-14-2020 06:18 AM

Maybe it’s time to buy a new TV

McGyver9 10-14-2020 06:20 AM

As previously mentioned, just get the model number off of the back.
Google it, with "screen blacks out with sound" or whatever your particular TV is doing.
(you might need to fiddle with the wording for more results)

These things are Lego's...
The parts are cheap, and there's probably a step-by-step youtube video to walk you through it.
If you can operate a Philips screwdriver, I'm confident that just about anybody can remove and plug in a new part. If not, ask a 'handy' friend to help you out...
(un-plug the TV from the wall FIRST)

If not, put it on the "classifieds" listing the problem...
Bet somebody will pick it up...rather than putting it in the 'landfill'.

I have had my "smart" Vizio for over seven years; a 35" no problems.

greenflash245 10-14-2020 07:13 AM

toss it and buy a new one

Rlheinz19@yahoo.com 10-14-2020 07:40 AM

My husband has had a Vizio for longer than I've known him. 12 yrs+ It moved to the bedroom several years to make way for a larger one and doesn't get used much so maybe that's what saved it. Our newer TV freezes on us from time to time. Not sure if that's the TV or the cable but suspect the TV.

Patents111 10-14-2020 07:46 AM

My newer 2 y.o. LG did the same thing. Turning off the tv using a physical button on the back of the set rather than using the remote to turn it off solved the problem for several months until it needed to be done again successfully.

NoMoSno 10-14-2020 08:20 AM

Ace Hardware in Wildwood replaced a power board in a newer Samsung for $125.
Much cheaper than replacing the TV.

My Samsung has done something similar I found a thread online that said to unplug the tv for a few minutes then plug it back in. I've had no issues since I did this and it's been well over a year.

On the other hand an 8 year old tv you got your money's worth.

I have a TV that has a great picture but some channels have no sound but if I go to another channel with sound then go back it usually will have sound then! But personally I think it’s my TV, not the cable provider.

I owned one for about a year before this kind of thing started. Luckily, I had purchased a warranty and replaced it with a Samsung. Will never buy anything LG ever again.

That is total BS !!

Our Vizio mounted in our lanai has been great going on 6 yrs......The lanai is our main “living area” and as such, our Vizio is used 95 % of the time vs our “indoor” TV’s......

LOL. I'd love to see the statistics behind that baseless comment. The 65" top of the line AT THAT TIME Vizio we got 3 years ago was top 3 rated on virtually every AV forum as well as by Consumer Reports and on RTINGS.COM. Still working like a champ (as is the 32" cheap low-end $115 one we have on our bedroom wall that is ~5 years old).

Ss6247 10-14-2020 09:57 PM

Your picture circuit board is going out. TV’s are easy to fix. It’s one of three things. Sound board, Pic board or power supply.

pauld315 10-14-2020 10:06 PM

If you can limp along until the Black Friday sales you can replace that TV really cheap.

Parts are all made in same Chinese factory

ditka41 10-15-2020 12:29 PM

Definitely would suggest tossing it and buying a new one. (When was the last time you saw a "TV REPAIR" Shop? --- Reason is that it is not worth repairing them.) Also, please keep in mind that handling the capacitors can lead to a very shocking experience if not properly discharged. "Shocking", as in stick your finger in the live lamp socket.

jwls2017 10-15-2020 06:46 PM

Check Google. I had same problem and Baked the mother board, extended life 2 yesrs

Why not just bypass the tv sound by connecting some speakers or a soundbar directly to the cable box? Or, you could try turning on the external speaker setting on your tv and connecting speakers to the audio out connection in the rear of the tv. Built-in tv speakers don't sound good anyway.
