Jimmy John's vs Jersey Mike's
One guilty pleasure that I have is Italian subs. I grew up in a very Italian suburb of Boston and miss the great Italian subs from my home town.
When I first moved down here I was going to Subway which is mediocre at best. Then I had an Italian sub from Publix and was pleasantly surprised. Not like home but not bad. Firehouse Subs are awful. Then Jersey Mike's came to town and I tried them and like them even better than Publix. So I've been going there. I've been seeing some ads for Jimmy John's and have been thinking about trying them out. Has anyone had their Italian subs? How do they compare to Jersey Mike's? For health reasons I only have one about once a month so I'd rather not waste it on something that's not going to be good. |
Publix has excellent subs
|
IMO I prefer firehouse subs, the bun more chewable for me and I like the taste. JMs good also but the price sticks in my throat :faint:. Haven’t had JJs around here but where I had them good but not great.

I did grow up in nearby RI in an Italian neighborhood with lots of bakeries that sold crusty great Italian bread, next door to one of them was a meat market that sold cold cuts. We'd buy a loaf of bread, cold cuts then head to Gemma's bar where for 15 cents you could also get a 10 ounce glass of Narragansett draft beer, great food with a cold one to wash it down with...........like the song "Those Were The Days My Friend We'd Thought They'd Never End...........but they did. |
I really REALLY love Publix subs. Their bread is excellent (they make their own bread in the bakery department) and they use premium deli meats (Boar's Head). What's even better is you can order it in advance on their app and pay for it when you get there to pick it up.

Stick with Jersey Mike’s. Nothing compares!
|
We run down to Italian Market in Tampa and pick up meat, crusty bread. If that’s not possible Publix uses boars head which in my mind is a better grade of meat Than in any of the chain Shop
|
I was with you for Jersey Mikes being the best and a short time after we were into the Pandemic someone on here posted about the majority of the SanGwich Technicians not wearing a mask or not wearing it properly.
Come to think of it it could have been out at the new store near Lowes. I'm not certain that the post said which store it was. Other than my mind Jersey Mikes is the food spot I think I miss the most. It's probably tied with missing Sakura and Chinese Food. Man 'O Man do I wish we all had our simple little lives back. Damn! The Jersey Mike's commercial got me back in for one shot at a half of an Italian Sub and sadly it wasn't the same. |
Giovanni's, Gio's and Roberto's has wonderful Italian subs. If you want to make your own subs visit the deli at Gio's on 301, just north of 466. So much better than chain sandwiches.

Italian subs
I also grew up in a very Italian suburb of Boston and then spent most of my married life in Rhode Island. Ah, the bakeries! Really miss them. You just can’t get the bread down here and you have to have good bread for a good sub.
We really like Publix subs, we get them Boars Head. |

I like the Publix "Ultimate" sub with Boars Head meat.

Jimmy Johns is good. Also try firehouse subs.

Subs
Try Little Italy in Inverness.

We went to the first Jersey Mike’s in Point Pleasant Beach, NJ for over 40 years, & were happy to see it arrive here. It’s not quite the same as up north but still very good. Never been to Jimmy John’’s but a grandson worked at one in Chandler, Az. & says they’re the best. We’ll wait & see. Publix is much better than Subway or Firehouse. Now we need good northeast real Italian pizza.
|
Jersey Mikes if you want meat and not just bread and a thin slice of meat. hh

I ‘ve tried the others and always go back to Publix. However , to get the real italian hero I had back north , I have them put on double meat for the $3 extra. Then I bought the submarine dressing which is near the boars head mustard and I add to the sub at home . Better that the stuff they put on when they are making it and keeps the sandwich dry till I get home. Wawa also makes a decent sub. It’s the bread that makes it and the others don’t have decent bread
|
You can't best a small kosher deli. But around here Firehouse.
|
No comparison
There is no comparison. Jimmy Johns is nowhere near the quality or quantity of Jersey Mike's, so keep driving south, or north, depending on where you life, and ALWAYS choose Jersey Mike's over Jimmy Johns!!

I'm from Jersey and agree that Jersey Mike's here doesn't put as much meat on as beck home. For great pizza NYPD is the closest we have found to back home.
|
Firehouse also gives a Veteran discount.
|
Give me a good crusty loaf of Italian bread and would rather make my own.
|
I agree

Buy Italian bread that you like, buy the cold cuts you want to put in your hero and make it yourself.
|
Jersey Mikes is way better
|
I’ve had jimmy johns once , never again the sub is nothing but bread and very little of anything else
|
I like Jimmy Johns Italian Sub. I also like Jersey Mikes (I actually grew up in Pt. Pleasant, NJ where Jersey Mike's orginated)

jj vs jm?
JJ is very good and meaty and its roll is tasty with a reasonable price. I did not try JM yet and will try soon. Px is not so thick with meat. Chas, Polo Ridge

Go with Jersey Mikes and Be sure to get it “Mike’s way”. You’ll never go back to Subway or Jimmy John’s.
|
I have to throw my hat in the ring for Jersey Mike's and honestly not really that close for me.
Your Firehouse review threw me a bit. I'm a fan....that said I've never had the Italian sub there. In conclusion, try Jersey Mike's I'll bet you won't be disappointed. |
Try the Italian subs at Giovannys or Gios or Robertos. Italian sandwiches made by Italians. Much better than the others mentioned here
|
You people are a piece of work.
Does anyone answer the man's question???? 33 replies including this one and 1/3 answer or semi answer the question. FTR stay with Jersey Mike's, Jimmy John's is okay. That said there are better sub places as others have mentioned while not answering the question. |

If I wanted to know whether sandwich A or sandwich B tastes better and I had already tried sandwich A, I would just go and try sandwich B.
In my humble parochial opinion, the best Italian sandwich in the world is the New Orleans version, the Muffaletta....and not the one from Central Grocery but the one from the little hole-in-the-wall, Verte Marte. You cannot get there by golf cart. |
