The latest in your life being monetized.
Just drove by a Circle K gas station and got a call on the IPhone. Guess what? It was a Circle K ad. Must be a feature of the latest iOS update. Add this to the dozen or so scam calls you get everyday. There oughta be a law. There is a law?

One of the reasons I keep location off unless needing to use it for waze

Only callers in your iPhone contacts will ring. Others will be forced to voicemail. |

But don't worry, it's the most unenforced law ever enacted. |

That’s why I very seldom bring my cell phone with me anywhere. There is a leash law for dogs, but as a person I won’t be put on a digital leash.

I use the feature mentioned above (Silence Unknown Callers) except when I am having work done on the house or expecting a delivery or something, where the driver/worker might be calling me on a strange cell number. Otherwise, people can leave me a message and I'll call them back. kathy |

Do notice that quite a few of these calls tell me they are recording the conversation for my protection. When that is said I hang up immediately. Too great a chance they will string together a bunch of my words and use it against me. |

This concept (called Area or Vicinity Marketing)was developed about 10-15 years ago. It broadcasts a message only to those people within say a 3 mile radius of your store. developed so that small businesses could reach out to locals without the huge expense of a media (radio) buy. Example: It's snowing so you get an ad "snow bird special, buy one pizza at Joe's Pizzeria get the second for 50% off only during tonight's snow storm."
|
These calls come as you drive through an area. So promoting using a cell while driving is against the law. I just don't answer while driving.

Simple solution is for phones to have an off switch for unwanted adds even if the phone has to cost a few more bucks |

Actually the government has forced the cell phone companies to develop stricter call identification technology so then VoIP calls or either blocked when the numbers are fake or must give a true number. I believe it will go into effect in the next 12 months or so. It won't necessarily stop you but I have a feeling the only thing they would stop is if they were charged five or ten cents a call if they are not on your contact list

I press the on off button on my iPhone and it silences the ringing of an unknown caller. Sometimes there is a red decline button that I can press. If it's important they leave a message. I always have my iPhone near however as I don't like to miss calls from family/friends.

We already have it through Xfinity Cellular

When I moved to The Villages, I refused to have my phone number listed in the Villages phone book. As a result, I do not get any scam phone calls. Problem solved.

hadn't heard of this before...hopefully it doesn't become a commonplace marketing technique
last thing I need is a call from 'Angelia' regarding an extended warranty whenever I pass an auto repair shop |

Go into your settings, then click on phone. Scroll down to silence unknown callers and toggle the button to green. That should take care of your nuisance calls. Good luck.
|
Good luck with that idea

I haven't done a poll, but I suspect that less than half of the people are willing to let their calls, that are not on their contact list, go to voicemail. |

Dana1963 - Your directions say to go to your Apps, but it’s actually your “Settings” then to “Phone” then to “Silence Unknown Callers”. Thank you so very much! We have been inundated with calls recently and this info is a blessing! 😊

100% solution - foolproof.
