Golf Lesson Suggestions?

Looking at a possible holiday gift for resident of the Villages. Did a search here but did not find any tutor names only a golf academy mention. Any suggestions or information would be greatly appreciated.

RalphM 12-08-2020 04:34 PM

Change last name spelling from Reisch to Wresch.

I've heard all the pro's in the Villages are outstanding. However, I was introduced to Steve Wresch, the pro at Continental Country Club on 44 by a mutualk acquintance. Being total novices my wife and I have really appreciated and enjoyed the instruction from Steve. 856-546-4867

I will second Steve at the Continental Country club. However, I thought his last name was Wresch. In any case, he has helped my game immensely.

I would highly recommend Craig Griffin at the Villages Golf Academy's Sarasota facility. He did wonders for my swing.

Also at Continental Country Club, that's on 44 between Buena Vista and Morse, is Sandra Chester. She use be based at the Hwy 301 driving range until they closed. I use to listen to her and students everytime I was there, she's excellent. Just do a search and you'll find her in this site recommended quite often.

Here's her website;

We had never swung a club even though we had tried without guidance. We took lessons with David Sherman at The Villages Golf Academy. He was terrific.

John Ford at GNLGolf. com is an experience in itself. He built clubs for Jack Nicklaus and makes custom clubs for customers. Maria at the Palmer Academy is wonderful too.

Swede10 12-09-2020 06:54 AM

Check out Barney Beard at Lady Lake Driving Range.

Another vote for Sandra. You can take individual or group lessons. She works with any physical problems you may have, to adapt for arthritis, etc

Craig is great

Craig is great. He fixed my swing and now I hit all my drives straight down the middle. He is one of the premium instructors in the villages and costs a little more, but well worth it.

gwenhwalker@yahoo.com 12-09-2020 07:28 AM

Craig or Tom at Sarasota facility

wamley 12-09-2020 07:33 AM

Agree, had hitch in my swing while hitting only my irons that could not feel. One lesson and he picked up on the issue I couldn't correct on my own. Hitting my irons great again.
Always recommend a pro to new players to avoid what I did, just go out and hack around the golf course. The things you learn to do incorrectly take a long time and much frustration to fix. Just my opinion.

dewilson58 12-09-2020 07:49 AM

My wife had Joey at Sarasota. Nice guy, but spent too much time talking about himself, his history, etc. Less than 1/2 the time was on her golf swing. Left with one minor drill. Again, nice guy.

wrestle1 12-09-2020 07:54 AM

Craig Griffin at Sarasota is an excellent instructor and keeps the atmosphere relaxed.

GaryKoca 12-09-2020 08:04 AM

I agree on Barney Beard. Google his name for contact information.

Sandra Chester at Continental Country Club on 44 is an excellent instructor. I highly recommend her over Steve Wresh

Cschultz 12-09-2020 08:13 AM

Barney Beard is a golf pro at Rolling Acres golf range. He’s excellent. He has an ad in the Daily Sun newspaper for a free first lesson. barneybeardgolf@yahoo.com

Cschultz 12-09-2020 08:14 AM

Barney Beard is great!

There is a little known place called Oxford Golf Academy behind Walmart on 466 that is incredible!
Oxford Golf Academy | Driving Range | Golf Lessons

They have 3 Pros there and are separate from the rest of the people using the golf range. I had the owner Chad Orbaker as my teacher.
He is SO great and really takes the time with you.

They have a big sand trap to practice out of as well as a putting section. It is also Golf Cart Accessible if you drive behind the Walmart.

Can't say enough about them and the prices are a lot better.

Marykschulz 12-09-2020 08:24 AM

Maria Brooks at Sarasota was great for me.

donassaid 12-09-2020 08:50 AM

Palmer Golf Academy. Ask for Mitch. Played on PGA tour, Senior tour and past champion of the Florida Open. Great teacher.

PhyllisC 12-09-2020 09:56 AM

My husband and I also used Steve Wresh at Continental. He’s very good and reasonable.

Susanne Chester is very good

Ralph Corso Golf at 352-751-1121 Has been great for me. I've struggled with different pros and decided to give it one more try down here in the Villages. He teaches over at Lady Lakes Driving range at 230 Rolling Acres Rd, Lady Lake, FL 32159. The range is run by the Lions at $5 a big bucket of balls. Buy 10 get one free. I think Ralph runs a group class at $99 for 5 Lessons. I do a private since I'm past that. Well worth it to me.

SFSkol 12-10-2020 02:56 PM

Thanks to all that replied. I've got my work cut out for me.

Have taken lessons from different ones. I prefer Craig Griffin at Sarasota, He does not talk down to the inexperienced and really helps. I went from never getting on the green to being and bogie to occasional birdie golfer thanks to him

Totally agree on Joey. I don't need to hear about all the pros he has played with. If you go to Sarasota (TV pros are definitely pricey) use Craig Griffin. Had good instruction from him in a group clinic.

Have heard high praise for Steve at Continental from multiple good, knowledgeable golfers.

Golf instructor search follow up

I am new to The Villages and am looking for an instructor as well. Other than Griffin, I get the impression a lot of the teachers are more focused on mid to high handicaps. I am 55 coming off of bicep surgery and need to start slow, haven't taken a full swing since Sept 4th.

I am a 6.9 index, prior to surgery I had a mid iron speed of 92 mph, hybrid speed 102 mph, 3 wood 105 mph, and driver speed of 108 mph that I could ratchet up to 112 mph.

Looking for an instructor that provides drills to work on, uses video and Trackman during lessons. Also will respond to texts, email and review videos that I send for follow up support.

Thank you for your help.

Another vote for the Oxford Academy. Multiple residents in my neighborhood use Billy Speckman. His love of golf is unquestionable. He teaches all levels including people who are just starting. Best thing about the range is in the summer the lessons are in the shade under giant trees. lol Tel 352-446-4456 Mobile 904-742-4517 email speckmanbilly@yahoo.com web site golfsouthernstyleacademy com

If you're in the new home section south of 44, then you probably know where Continental Country Club. It's the big trailer park with an 18 hole golf course on 44 just west of Warm Springs Rd. Sandra is the main instructor at their golf course.

Before then Sandra Chester was head instructor at Lopez for 3 years, was the Villages High School Girl team head coach and she has taught over 2,000 students in her time. She was a member of the University of North Carolina Wilmington college team. She was a decorated golf instructor for 12 seasons at Southern Pines Golf School. Here's her website.

Was not very helpful, teach’s like you never played before, started wasting time on irons , wanted help with woods, was a waste of time sorry Ralph.

Plain and simple Stu Michaels at Oxford Golf Academy. A true player and super guy. One of the best in the whole State.

Dotneko 03-26-2021 12:00 AM

Thanks to all who recommended Steve Wresh. My husband and I have taken several lessons that we have enjoyed immensely
