Fraud Alert!

I just got a new FRADULENT phone call. The call started out by thanking me for my Amazon purchase of $399.?? Since we have Prime and often order from them, I was not surprised, but the amount was more than I membered spending. I panicked! The call went on to say that if we had not made the charge, I should press “1”. Why would they offer that to EVERYONE? I called Amazon & they said they would never call me. The charge was also NOT on my account
BEWARE of all phone calls, especially during the Holiday season! DO NOT give them any Information!:

BogeyBoy 12-08-2020 06:16 PM

I have received this call a couple of times. Our Amazon account is in my wife's name so I knew it was a scam right away.

Stu from NYC 12-08-2020 07:29 PM

We got it too. We checked our account after hanging up the phone and knew it was fraud.

OrangeBlossomBaby 12-08-2020 07:35 PM

I get texts reminding me that I should press a hyperlink to schedule my delivery all the time. I block those every time they come in (they come from different phone numbers each time).

villagetinker 12-08-2020 08:07 PM

I have turned on 2 factor security, when ever I sign in (user name and password) I get a phone call with a code that I must enter to actually get on the site. This should keep the account safe.

retiredguy123 12-08-2020 08:14 PM

This scam has nothing to do with Amazon. They are just using Amazon's name because they know that millions of people order products from Amazon.

asianthree 12-08-2020 08:41 PM

I don’t get weird calls on my cell. They go right to spam, unless in my contacts. Land line is the same, if number isn’t in my list, I don’t get the call

I guess you have a phone number on the caller ID. When in doubt, just google the phone number anytime you suspect something. You'll find out right away if it's a scam or not.

Besides google, here's a couple of more links.

Fraudulent email messages, BEWARE.

Fraudulent email messages, BEWARE. I recently noticed a email on my iphone titled "thank you for your Apple purchase the charge of $69.00 was charged to your account". I did not open the email. I checked all of my accounts, checking, 2 credit cards, for several days and there was NO Charge for $69.00. Again I did not open the email, Not sure what would of happened if I did?? Perhaps they would have taken info off of my phone??
Just Beware, if the email looks suspicious it probably is hit [B] "JUST DELETE"

Cheapbas 12-09-2020 06:52 AM

Yep, another one lately is Norton antivirus renewal, for $$$. Set your phone to silence unknown callers, if they are not in your contacts, you’ll never hear it. If it is someone you know they’ll figure out how to get in touch with you.

Scam calls and emails have been around for decades. Nothing new and neither is this scam. Its an everyday occurrence

larbud 12-09-2020 07:27 AM

I got acall from a busy indian sounding call center along the same lines,Asked me a lot of bs questions trying to get me to say yes to something . What they got was a lesson in redneck profanity! Wife says take the high road they’re just trying to help you! Whut?

Bwolf1 12-09-2020 07:34 AM

Why panick. I get stuff all the time that I don’t want. Just return it for a full refund. It’s easy and it’s an Amazon benefit, no questions asked.

That's not new. It's just a phone version of those email saying the same thing. "If you didn't make this purchase, click here ..." and then you are directed to a link that looks like an Amazon login and is designed to steal your id / password when you type it in.

In the phone version, they will ask you to confirm your credit card so that they can refund the purchase price. There are still dummies out there giving this information over the phone to "Dave" who sounds like Anup Gupta from India.

Dilligas 12-09-2020 07:52 AM

In addition to the phone calls, emails saying your renewal of a subscription to a tech repair. All these scams should be ignored and deleted or forwarded to the company’s fraud site. If you question it, go online and check, but NOT through the links they offer. Also watch out for shipping confirmations and tracking. Check orders and charges directly without using links.

GaryKoca 12-09-2020 08:02 AM

I got an email on this. Not Amazon. I called Amazon and they said to ignore it. It is hackers.

Jacob85 12-09-2020 08:12 AM

This is a scam that has gone on for a long time but I think more people are more likely to fall for it since we are all ordering on line more. If you are ever in doubt about a call or email contact the source directly like you did but if you still have questions you can call seniors V Crime at the sherifs annex. 352-689-4600.

Good Warning! Myself I would of called my bank & told them about it. My bank has always taken care of issues like this. I’m surprised my bank haven’t call me yet & asked me if to call them about some charges yet, because I’m in Ohio & I live in Texas!

wyealbert 12-09-2020 08:45 AM

Check your Amazon order page and that should ease your panic.

I bought flights and hotel rooms for a family of four in China with 2 factor security on my account.

mrf6969 12-09-2020 08:50 AM

Come on people. Common sense should tell you these are fraudsters and hackers. Hang up/don't answer. Don't reply/delete. Scammers/Hackers will always try. How stupid do they think we are???

PugMom 12-09-2020 08:54 AM

and wouldn't you know i got this seasons 1st Social Security fraud call 2 days ago! :a040: LOL. press 1 to be connected to someone in some foreign country.

FromNY 12-09-2020 09:01 AM

If number is not one I know it can go to voice mail. I do not answer ANY calls unless I know the caller. Voice Mail saves me all the time.. if the scammed call leaves a message Block and Delete. NEVER answer unless in my contacts.

PennBF 12-09-2020 09:06 AM

Another Idea

Check your credit card charges on a daily basis and if you spot a $1.00 charge call
and contest it as this is a method some use to see if you are watching charges to
your credit card. If you don't contest it right away the hacker knows your careless with card charges and next time will bill a much greater sum against your card. :ohdear:

lstevenson1470 12-09-2020 09:16 AM

I received a similar one. Someone called and said he was checking a possibly fraudulent charge on my Visa, an IPhone in Austrailia. When I said it wasn't anything I had ordered he said that the charge would be removed from my account as soon as I answered a few questions about my account. Click.

linko38 12-09-2020 09:30 AM

I received that call Thanksgiving day. I kept them on the phone for 30 minutes. Then I told them shame on you for ripping people off! My father fell for it twice! They get on your computer remotely and get on your accounts! Plus they charged him hundreds of dollars! Never let a third party remotely access your computer. I’m glad I wasted their time that day. That was 30 minutes they weren’t ripping someone else off!

Maybe so, but it never hurts to inform others. There might be some out there who don't know about this scam.

Thanks to the OP.

Wow, 30 minutes, that is a record.
When they call me, I always say I'm glad you called. I'm in the middle of cooking Mom's tomato sauce. Hold on for a second and I just need to stir it. I come back and ask them if they think it needs more salt. I debate with them, yes or no. I tell them to hold on for a sec while I add salt. My record so far is only three times. Clearly, I need to try harder.

I got to 15 minutes once. It was one of the "tech support" calls where they would eventually ask me to let them into my computer. It took 15 minutes before he became frustrated with me not being able to type things correctly.

We recently saw this on the news in Tampa that this was one of the new scams coming out for the Holidays, thank you for posting it since we too use Amazon a lot (especially during the holidays) and my husband and I are not always aware of each others purchases.

The problem is that there are a lot of important phone calls ... like from your doctors' staffs using numbers that aren't on your contacts. Set your answering machine to ask them to leave a brief msg and that you will call them back. Spammers don't do that often.

True, but sometimes important calls come in at the end of the day. So, you call back and the office is closed. Or, if you call a doctor's office back, what are the chances that you will actually get to talk to someone? I always answer my calls. For me, it's just easier that way.

I actually got a scam caller convinced that I was driving to Walmart to purchase money transfer as instructed. Kept them on the phone the whole time (as I remained sitting in my house) and after about a half hour finally asked them if they really thought I was that stupid.

Rosebud1949 12-09-2020 10:49 AM

Both the Amazon name and also Apple are being used this year for scams....... If you "actually " get a live person on the line, use a referee's whistle and blow it hard in their ear. They dont usually phone back. We had 15 Apple calls on Sunday alone. Yes we are on the "NO CALL LIST" A lot of good that is.

Joanne liloia 12-09-2020 11:12 AM

It happened to me also.

Exactly ! They use other peoples numbers with auto dialers! The worst is home shield and extension of auto warranty! When you didn’t live here you had the same calls this isn’t new !

Why do you need a landline ? Your number is listed nationwide

Spike380 12-09-2020 11:41 AM

We are prime targets here-"older"-and come from the generation of a handshake sealed the deal. So we really think something is wrong. You did what we ALL have to do: check with your grandkids before paying "to get out of jail"; ignore apple or windows flashing on your screen that your computer needs help; and also your emails saying your account has been frozen. CALL. So glad they didn't get you!
