1 Night Only! Jupiter, Saturn, and the Moon Will Form a Cosmic Triangle in the Night Sky

Bjeanj 12-17-2020 08:28 PM

I’m going to look!

Polar Bear 12-18-2020 08:54 AM

I’ve used binoculars to see Jupiter and Saturn so close together. Only one appeared so far to the naked eye. Interesting to see.

graciegirl 12-18-2020 09:09 AM

Every time I read about this event about to happen with Jupiter and Saturn, I think of this song by the Fifth Dimension, but that was Jupiter and Mars.

Let the Sunshine in.

Thank you for the reminder. I put a sticky note on my computer. I hope it ushers in a calmer and more reasoned time than this year.

Hoping for a nice clear night

They're closest together that night, but they are very close together for a week or more each side of that date. Just FYI in case you want to take a look on any upcoming clear night for a while.

Do you have a particularly bright sky? I saw what I thought were both planets a few nights ago using only my eyes. Maybe I was seeing something else.

Yeah. I'm just viewing from my front yard, with street lights, yard light, Christmas lights. Heheh. I'm sure they're both visible from a good location. But with my binoculars, they were both pretty bright, very visible, and cool to see. :)

I plan on going to a spot near Lake Miona rec center near the closest point. It should be good from there.

Since the last time it occurred was the year 1226 nobody alive today or for about 800 years will see it. Even though there is no evidence, it is referred to as the Bethlehem Star by some.

It is also the date of the winter solstice.

That morning, the Sun collides with the Tropic of Capricorn.

It is going to be great watching this over the Chesapeake Bay! Thank you for the reminder.

That’s when they conjunction takes place (only actually seen from telescope) one planet passing in front of the other from earths angle. The come close all the time but rarely block out vision of planet behind them from our view on earth. Few years ago several planets conjunctions and there was all sorts of theory’s what might happen. But, nothing did.

Which one of us is going to live 800 years to see it again?

The planets follow circumference line across the sky close to moon circumference line. So, if you know where the moon rises and sets you can follow that line across sky. Looking south after sun goes down and nearly straight up you will moon ( or you might not depending the time of month moon cycle) orange planet Mars and looking further SW along the circumference line you will see Jupiter (won’t see Saturn it will be behind Jupiter at that date and time) the second brightness object in the sky (not counting moon). It Jupiter should be close to 20 degrees off the horizon on line where sun when down by 21st.

You can get free app for IPhone or IPad that identifies objects in sky and universe. I have sky guide app.

I haven't looked for it yet, but been told to look west after sunset. Lower right side of the moon. Hope this is correct, but you may want to corroborate.
