Pool temps and swimming

We just bought our house in August and are coming back up for the holidays. The weather seems like it will be in the high 60’s and maybe the 70’s. Are the pools heated enough to swim?

JSR22 12-23-2020 09:43 AM

pool temp

Villages pools are around 82. It is cold getting out. My pool is 85 and I have not gone in for several days.

Bjeanj 12-23-2020 09:44 AM

The pools ARE heated. However, I figure at some point I’ll have to get out of the water, and will freeze my heinie, so I don’t go.

Hope this helps. ; - )

Stu from NYC 12-23-2020 09:45 AM

Last week went to the pool at Truman with kids and grandkids.

We all thought the water was cold with air temp about 75.

Did stay in for a half hour or so.

With them leaving in a couple of days do not think we will be going back until the air temp is back to the 80's.

coffeebean 12-23-2020 10:59 AM

The sports pools I have swam in are Colony, Seabreeze and Lake Miona. They are heated and the water is very comfortable when the air temp is cold. The water is so warm, you can see the steam coming off the top of the water. As someone already said, it's getting out of the water that becomes a problem.

I agree, if you are actively exercising, and keep your entire body in the water, the temperature in the sports pools is adequate. I have swam laps in the sports pools with the outside temperature was in the high 30’s with no problem. It is cold when you get out, but just dry off quickly and slip in some sweats and all is good.

That being said, we like to keep our back yard pool closer to 90 in the winter since we are more relaxing than working out. And when it’s real cold, we pass on the frozen margaritas in plastic cups.

sallyg 12-23-2020 12:46 PM

Just barely warm enough not to ice up. Just kidding. They are not very warm, and getting out is really a challenge.

patfla06 12-23-2020 03:19 PM

The longer you live in Florida the warmer the water needs to be.
Typically we don’t swim from November thru April.
We lived in Florida 23 years.

Truer words was never spoke!

My mother-in-law experienced the same thing when she moved to Sun City West in Arizona many years ago. She swam all through the winter the first year, a few times the second year and never in the winter after that.

That said, I know of people who swim laps or walk the lanes or who play water volleyball a couple times a week, all year long down here. More power to 'em!

Kahuna32162 12-23-2020 04:53 PM

They say 82 to 84, but when it goes down to the lower 30's (like it's doing this week) takes that water a long time to heat up.

CoachKandSportsguy 12-23-2020 06:07 PM

I spent a whole day one summer snorkeling at J. Pennekeefe reef, ocean temp 90+ . I remember getting back to New England that same summer, and telling people I am not going in, the water LOOKS cold. Took me about 3-5 years to get back into the NE water in the summer time. . .

FL spoils the northerners. . . but I can't wait to be spoiled. . .

vintageogauge 12-23-2020 07:25 PM

If you are coming down from the north and the sun is out it will be just fine. Before buying we rented during the winter and anything over 60 was a pool day as long as the sun was out. Now, 75 or warmer with sunshine would be a pool day.

stan the man 12-23-2020 09:04 PM

I bring my kool-aid with me to the pools

Jojoe 12-24-2020 06:12 AM

The Miona pool is very cold!!! They are not doing anything about it!!!

Being from Massachusetts, the only time I have gone in the ocean since I was a teenager is in the Caribbean. Anything below 85 is freezing and I have only been in Florida for 2 months. What will it be like after I am acclimated to the Florida weather?

Aloha 12-24-2020 06:53 AM

I go to the heated pools in the warmest part of day, when the air temperature is 70 or above. The wind also is a factor in whether to go or not. Today the temperature is supposed to max out at 77, so a good afternoon pool day around 2:00 p.m.

thegfrerers@comcast.net 12-24-2020 07:22 AM

82/84 degrees

msilagy 12-24-2020 07:31 AM

It depends whether you are one of those "oooooh I'm so cold when it's 90 outside". If you are a person who can weather the storm you can go in the pool easily in 82 degree water with 65 or 70 degree sunny days or even cooler. Remember the cooler the temperature the warmer the water feels.

steve1025 12-24-2020 07:54 AM

In winter Oct. Thru April pool water temp. is set to 84. But your body temp is 98. So it might seem cool at first. Just remember there is no swiming in neighborhood pools.

PoolBrews 12-24-2020 08:21 AM

My pool is 88... so we are warm enough when we get out that it's easy to towel off and head inside!

Fredster 12-24-2020 08:57 AM

I plan to go to my neighborhood pool at 11:30 today.
The pool water there is heated to about 84-85 degrees, and the outside temp will be about 72 degrees, so for me it will be fine, just a bit nippy before toweling off when I get out.
From what I’ve observed, individual tolerance for heat and cold varies greatly.

Chi-Town 12-24-2020 10:21 AM

Here's the current weather in the Chicago area. I'm sure that anyone arriving from there would be yelling 'last one in is a rotten egg'.

14°F Partly to mostly cloudy and windy. Low 14F. Winds WSW at 20 to 30 mph. Winds could occasionally gust over 40 mph.

Bjeanj 12-24-2020 10:27 AM

What I don’t understand is how those Polar Plunges don’t kill half the people who do it. Seems like the frigid water would stop your heart. If not, then getting out would!

slpierce21@gmail.com 12-24-2020 10:44 AM

I agree about the Pools temps...Lake Miona is always cold due to the fact that only 1 of 4 heaters is working and we have notified them several times. One more bit of info...this pool needs major clean up...poop all over the rafters (its been there for several years), mold on the floor, showers heads broken and the white fan is brown. They need to shut it down for a day and do a major clean up.

In my opinion, they are heated enough to cook stuff. I never use them because they are not refreshing- too darn warm.

They are heated to 84F and open at 7:15 - 7:30. I swim every morning if the temp. is at 55F or above. The water is warm but it can be cold getting out.

Saw a couple from England swimming when it was 29F out they said the water was fine.

Must swim during the summer mostly then the temp. can get into the 90's.

That’s a recipe for health problems

Hmmm, not sure how getting in a great weightless exercise, that puts no stress on the body’s joints, would be a recipe for health problems? Read the book, Why We Swim, by Bonnie Tsui, there is significant scientific evidence that cold water swimming has very significant health benefits. I much prefer swimming laps in the cold of the winter. I sweat while swimming in the summer it is so hot out, and can’t swim laps in the middle of the day without getting a sunburn, which is a recipe for health problems.

And good luck finding a lap lane at a sports pool that's not at zero-dark-thirty or ass-hat-o'clock.

Your neighborhood pool sounds warm! If you don't mind me asking, which pool is it? I have checked several and the temp seems to vary. I wish they were all kept at 84-85.

Velvet 12-24-2020 02:37 PM

Each degree of temperature to heat the swimming pools in the winter months is quite expensive and we don’t like price increases in amenities.

Mikef99 12-24-2020 04:41 PM

The water is always heated...I swim most days ....getting out on cold days I do noot talk much and go to the locker room and there are warm showers there too......I swam when it was in the 30s a week or so ago and it was fine. for me, it depends on how I feel on that day at that time...I lap swim so I am in the water for some time too

My understanding is that all the pools in TV,
are heated to be in the 84-85 degree range in cooler weather.*
Now the one I frequent is very consistent as are a couple of others I’ve used, but maybe some VCDD districts aren’t run or maintained as well??:icon_wink:
I can only share how things are handled in my district.

In the summer if we’ve had a string of 90+ days,
and warm nights the pool temps will be much higher.

*Found this from the recreation department, and I stand corrected!

“All pools are heated during the cooler months. We strive for water temperatures between 81-84 degrees. Temperature will fluctuate depending on the weather.”

By the way I sent you a PM.

Barborv 12-25-2020 04:49 PM

The only thing I found interesting when I was researching all the communities to where I was going to buy, is that the Villages has not one indoor pool. All other communities that we visited all throughout Florida and in south Carolina had indoor and outdoor pools.

Mhartt 12-25-2020 07:16 PM

This explains why I was all alone swimming in McClure today. The water was warm and only suffered a moment getting out. The best part is bragging to the Grandchildren that I was doing their favorite thing on Christmas.

tophcfa 12-25-2020 09:32 PM

I will gladly take a very cold day with an empty pool to swim laps, seven days a week and twice on Sunday, versus a beautiful warm day with an overcrowded pool.. To each his or her own I guess? Merry Christmas!

TJLAMPHERE 12-26-2020 10:08 AM

What pools can you swim in??? What is allowed? Can you direct me to a site that outlines the pool rules?? Thanks!

rustyp 12-26-2020 10:13 AM

A bit of trivia for you. The Orange Blossom CC swimming pool uses the waterfall to help regulate pool water temperature. When the pool falls below 80 degrees they turn the waterfalls off. The moving water cools off faster exposed to the outside air in turn dilutes the temperature of the whole pool quicker. Similar to circulating water through your cars cooling system with a thermostat to regulate engine temp. Likewise by turning the waterfalls on above 80 degrees helps to keep the water cooler during hot spells. So now you know if you go by OB pool and the water is flowing over the falls the water in the pool is above 80 degrees and safe to go back into the water.
