Are there great bagels nearby?

Up north, my go to place is Manhattan Bagels. Boiled then baked in a variety of flavors. Anything like this is the area.

Thanks FRED

Brooklyn Bagel on 441

Stu from NYC 01-09-2021 12:36 PM

Publix has good frozen bialys

njbchbum 01-09-2021 01:17 PM

Brooklyn Bagel on 441 in the Best Buy/Joann's/Pet Smart shopping center. Closest thing to "home" and lotsa selections. After going there once, I now call day before or soon after they open to reserve what I want just to make sure they are not sold out when I get there! lol

Panera will always substitute in a pinch or desperation! :(

I'll second the vote for Brooklyn Bagels. They have really good garlic bagels, and their sandwiches are huge. My recommendation:

Toasted garlic bagel with lox and cream cheese, capers (there's an extra charge for capers), and raw onion. Buy a second bagel, ask for a knife.

Scrape off half the cream cheese onto the other bagel, take half the lox off the first and add it to the second, do the same with the onions and if they're generous with the capers, do it with those too.

Now you have 2 very filling lox and cream cheese sandwiches for the price of one that's way too much "stuff" on it for one person to eat by themselves anyway.

I believe this sandwich is called the Williamsburg, you just have to ask for and pay extra for the capers.

They definitely put on too much cream cheese.

Everybody does

Worth the extra cost

If money is not an issue order from Zabars. I just got an order, the bagels are good, but the nova and smoked salmon are outstanding.

We’re from northern NJ just outside NYC & the only thing close is Brooklyn Water Bagel. Been here 15 yrs & still haven’t found real NY pizza, bialys, & hard rolls. Nothing like Taylor ham, aka Taylor pork roll, & cheese on a real bagel or toasted hard roll.

J1ceasar 01-10-2021 07:23 AM

Nothing compares with New York area bagels . Best bet is to have friends bring down a bag .

lclear 01-10-2021 08:00 AM

There are no bagel shops south in The Villages, not even in Brownwood Paddock Square, and nothing south of the turnpike. When I want a dozen bagels (to freeze) I have to travel 30 minutes to the north side, or go to Sumter Landing to Paneras for bagels.

Turnpike Mike's in Summer glen has taylor ham.

Try Yalhala Bakery...it's nearby. I buy Taylor Ham on the internet... it's a little expensive. I haven't lived in Jersey since 1965 but I still love this sandwich.

Brooklyn Water Bagels on 441.

Chi-Town 01-10-2021 09:02 AM

Brooklyn Bagels is the only place that I get bagels. The treated water and recipe make a huge difference. I tried the Einstein bagels at Publix because they were so good at the Einstein stores around Chicago. What a disappointment. BTW, Dunkin Doughnuts bagels are OK in a pinch.

tjsolomon 01-10-2021 09:26 AM

We like Brooklyn Bagels on 441, but the last couple of times they have been little undercooked and we like ours to be a nice toasty brown. I try to look and pick out the ones that look more done, but the angle isn't great from the counter area.

Brad-tv 01-10-2021 09:38 AM

I agree the best place to find NY/ Long Island Bagels your gonna find around here are from Brooklyn Bagels on 441. And it all comes down to the water. You will notice when you walk in there they have a major water filtration system. It looks like a oversized / sediment and reverse osmosis system and that makes all the difference .
Water makes all the difference in the world the way your food /coffee/ bagels taste. Most places I go to they don’t use any filtration. A good way to tell if a restaurant is purifying their water is to order a glass of water and see if it tastes good. Most of the time you can smell and taste chlorine.
Also I have heard some places have their water sent here from NY ( not sure if it’s true) and that’s why their food tastes so good.
Clean purified water equals great tasting food and drink!

From Brooklyn Water Bagels website:

“ THE WATER

By using our proprietary water treatment system, known as “Brooklyn Water Works,” Brooklyn Water Bagel® can successfully replicate the natural composition of the water that flows through the Catskill Mountains in upstate New York into the homes of Brooklyn residents.

This replication is accomplished by filtering local water down to its purest, most natural state, and then adding unique elements found only in our water. Our advanced technology allows us to transform any source of tap water in the world into clean, safe drinking water, which is used in every recipe, beverage, ice cube, and kettle used to boil our bagels.”

So, in effect, it’s simply a marketing tool.

barb32162 01-10-2021 09:53 AM

I agree the closest thing to New York bagels locally is Brooklyn Bagel with Panera as a runner up. If you want the real deal do as I do and order Ess-a-Bagels from Goldbelly.com. $60 for 24 but close your eyes and you are back in NY. This site sells iconic food from all over the country so if you are craving something from home you can't find in Florida check here. I have also ordered Junior's cheesecake from them.

The closest you'll find to real pizza is Gio's on 301 above 466.

Thanks for the tip

Brooklyn Bagel is amazing.... If I am in the mood but don't want to drive over there I check fresh market on 441. They make water bagels that are pretty good.

Vjjer1 01-10-2021 11:10 AM

Based on everyone’s recommendation, we jumped in the car and ran over to Brooklyn Water Bagel. The bagels were definitely worth the trip! Thanks

KristineTVFL 01-10-2021 12:35 PM

Publix has Einstein bagels, they are very good.

MiniCooper 01-10-2021 02:35 PM

Well I thank everyone for their bagel input and technical knowledge.
Based upon postings we did the drive (30 min from Fenney) to Brooklyn Bagel. Bought 2 sandwiches and a fresh dozen to go. Quite good and much thanks.
Wished I had read the cream cheese lox and spare bagel recommendation. There was plenty of filling to make two really great sandwiches.

Thanks FRED

Winn Dixie sells whole Taylor Pork Rolls. Publix sells boxes of it pre-sliced. So happy to be able to have a little slice of Jersey when I want it!!

charlieo1126@gmail.com 01-10-2021 11:24 PM

And don’t forget the big black and whites at Brooklyn Bagel , I get one every to weeks or do they are huge and tasty , I think eating them has helped me keep my size 28 waste because I can’t eat anything else that day lol
