any suggestions on how to get a woodpecker from pecking my window? this woodpecker has been pecking my window for about 3 weeks now and won't stop. Any suggestions would greatly appreciated.

Only a suggestion or two. Hardware stores sometimes sell bird, critter, etc repellent. I would first try spraying your window frame with an insecticide in case Woodrow is there for the bugs. You can also try spraying a little vinegar/water mix. And its been said woodpeckers hate the smell of garlic, so.....

Might try rubber snake? Or fake owl? If he pecking the window and not structure he may be seeing his shadow think it’s another male competitor? If he’s or she pecking the structure they are looking for bugs or nesting site my guess?

We had a cardinal flinging himself against a window. We finally stopped him by putting aluminum foil in the window for about a week.

I had a similar situation while living in Savannah, Georgia. I finally solved the problem by purchasing what I believe they call garden netting. I bought it at Lowes. Anyway, I attached the net over the window frame top and bottom. I believe the bird thought the reflection in the window was another bird. The net made the bird think it might get tangled in it. It stopped the problem in a couple of days but I kept the net in the garage. Luckily never needed it again. By the way, the garden net was very thin nylon material that you could barely see both inside and outside.

As it's been quite cold lately, it was probably freezing and wanting in! :1rotfl::icon_wink:

Be careful with the netting. I have had birds get tangled in them. It can be dangerous for them. Hang a piece of string with a small piece of clothe tied to it and they will go away.

Wood peckers are territorial, it’s likely not after bugs. This one is probably chasing away a competitor, it’s own reflection. Find or make an item that has shiny or reflective long tails made of paper or foil, something that easily moves in the wind and hang it over your window. Sorry don’t recall what they call these, think they sell them at a store that sells party decorations.

We had a problem with a woodpecker when we lived in VA. We took a piece of aluminum foil about 18 inches long. We cut it so that it had long strips of ‘fringe’. Secure it to the window frame. Not sure if it’s the shine or the fluttering motion that does the trick, but we never saw Woody again! Good luck!

Put mustard around window.

NH Forestry Office sent me a roll of red/silver mylar ribbon and said to secure above the area, then do several twists and then secure below the siding when the pecker was creating all sorts of damage in cedar siding. The ribbon twists in the wind. Never saw the bird again. Took down after a couple weeks and resided that area of house 8:(

Not sure about here but in CT they are protected. We moved here before we could put them up, we had bought a plastic owl that it’s head moves and metal wind chimes. We were told as long as there is movement and noise in the area they would stay away

Take long pieces of ribbon and tape them to outside or hang over the edge of window at the top. It will keep any bird from tapping or flying into the window.

We have the same problem in our patio, a female cardinal keeps hitting the glass.

There are other similar suggestions, ribbons etc.
I would suggest you buy a roll of that mylar gift wrap, the silver or gold stuff. You want the plastic not the paper stuff. You cut it into strips and it blows in the wind. Birds, squirrels do not like the moving flashes.

You might also try a radio talk radio stations work best.

Can't help it. If all else fails post your mortgage on the glass. Or perhaps the rules and regulations.

We tie grocery-style plastic bags to our light fixtures to discourage nesting birds, when needed. Perhaps if you tacked, or taped one to your window, he’d give up.

We had this problem a few years ago. It is his reflection that he thinks is another bird that he is pecking at. Wet a bar of soap and rub it on the outside of the window so it is no longer reflective. By the time the rain washes it away he will have forgotten about his rival.

Thanks everyone for all the great suggestions. I put up some reflective tape with aluminum foil on it. Seems to be working so far.

I had a woodpecker problem at my last house. Nothing seemed to work until I heard about using a shiny helium filled balloon on a string. Something about the movement and sun reflecting on the balloons worked well (2 on a large window). The helium only lasted about a week and needed to do a second time. The woodpecker had found a new place by then. I did have to let my neighbors know I was not throwing a party.

Tape a picture of a shotgun to the window. Or I could loan you a picture of my mother-in-law.

Still think I like the idea of a bb gun or perhaps go back to my roots for a pea shooter

Buy inexpensive fake snake or owl and hang/perch above window on gutter.
