Sams should have an assortment as well as Staples or Office Depot

I've always had good luck with the HP OfficeJet Pro. The newest version can be had for around $200. I own a small business and have one that's probably two generations old and I've never had any issues with it. |
I am partial to HP printers. Yes, I did work for them :). I have found them to be very reliable, range in price from $50 and up, and have excellent print quality. Most of their new printers, they have something called "Instant Ink". You pay buy the page and it doesn't matter if you are printing and 8x11 photo or a spreadsheet. The printer communicates with HP and they automatically send you (free) ink prior to you needing it.
What you should do first, is determine how you are going to use it. I wouldn't purchase a $50 casual home printer if you are going to use it for a business and print hundreds of pages a month. Like wise, I wouldn't buy a business printer if I want excellent photo printing. If you tell us how you plan to use it, I could make a recommendation. |
I think Brother Laser Printers are great.
|
I have 2 HP laser printers that are older than I am (well, almost) and one is the spare in case the first one quits. They're built like tanks and good quality printing. I like HP.
|
I have cartridges now, next will be tank fill. Printer is more expensive, but not having to buy cartridges will make up the difference
|
I gave up on ink jet printers too many problems with ink and the printheads. I went with Brother laser printers, a black and white was the first one, then I went for a color. Both of these are hooked up wirelessly and have worked well for 1 to 2 years so far.

Brother MFC-J805DW INKvestment Tank Color Inkjet All-in-One Printer Great printer and no problems after over a year an 1/2. Do not buy Epson. |
Love our HP from Best Buy.

I have been looking also. Frankly, every printer available by every manufacturer has many poor ratings. You should put this question to Google.

HP is the only way to go. Their Print and Scan Doctor software (free) takes care of all issues for you.

Fan of Hp
I'm a big fan of Hp for quality of print and ink usage. Quality will also be based on the level of printer you get and I've never gone bottom or top shelf. I've listened to many complain about how much ink they buy and it seems like my Hp's are more economical.
I've never had to replace an Hp printer, always replaced for a new/different unit for my ever changing needs. |
Brother laser bw runs great for me

Consider a used commercial printer
I long ago gave up on inkjet printers. Since I usually only print a few times a month or so, the ink cartridges were usually clogged. While I could often clean them, too often needed to buy new ones. The cost is one thing but the inconvenience of having to do maintenance just when I wanted to print was madding.
I picked up a rebuilt hp cp2025dn color laser printer on ebay about 6 years ago for about $165. It has been trouble free so far. It takes 4 individual color cartridges. I use cheap 3rd party cartridges (< $15 each) vs the hp ($133 each) ones. I go through a black cartridge about once a year. I replaced the original yellow cartridge after 5 years. The other two cartridges each lasted between 2 and 3 years each. While it does not have built in wireless, by connecting it via Ethernet cable to my router, I get wireless access to it from all the phones and laptops on my network. About the only disadvantage I’ve found is that it weights about 50 pounds! As such, it has not moved since I set it up. The quality of the printouts is excellent for text and graphics. Color photos not so much. I would suspect, that few people really need a home color printer and that a cheap B&W laser printer would be fine for occasional times a hard copy is needed. My incremental cost per (paper and ink) of a mostly text sheet is a little more than 3¢. For color photos, since its usually much more ink dense, perhaps 10¢ per side. As the cost is so low I give no pause to printing hundred page reference documents on occasion. |
Is your recommendations come with fax too ?

Epson ET2720 love it takes the liquid ink and I have not come close to running out since new 4-5 months

One more thought, since I do photo restoration I need a scanner that scans at least 2400 dpi. I bought a Canon printer last year (thought it was a good sale price) and it only scanned up to 600 dpi. I had to return it. If scan quality is important, not all scanners are the same.

HP Office Jet Pro 9015 on my second one now over a eight year period. uses very little ink and only have to refill twice a year. I do alot of copy's. Black white and color It was around 150.00

Brother all in one at Best Buy
|
If you can get one, laser all in one is best. As others pointed out, HP and Brother are great. As are Canon. Check out Office Depot, the manufacturer online store, Best Buy, Sam's, Costco, and others.
Be careful with used, as defects are possible. For size, consider inkjet HP 9010 series: Costco has had the HP 9018 for sale for $129-$199 at various times over the last two years. Sam's, too. I got one as a 2nd printer here in Florida, with my workhorse laser and OfficeJet Pro back in Oregon. Both great high volume/low-cost-per-page color printers. The 9018 prints on and scans both sides of the page automatically, connects via WiFi or USB, and has low cost per page printing with its XL cartridges. Nice compact size, too. Can also print on photo paper. Now that I'm permanent in Florida, selling the OfficeJet Pro x551dw printer if interested; no built-in scanner, but have an Epson flatbed scanner for free with the printer. Msg me if interested. |

I purchased the above on ebay (new) 5 years ago for $ 220.00. It is black and white laser, does it all, is a real workhorse. I just had to print 75 pages for the IRS, a real breeze with the automatic feeder. The replacement cartridge's are 2 for $ 16.00 and each lasts 2500 pages. The fax feature is a plus as I do it at home as to some vendor, who now has a copy of my papers in their hard drive.

Brother Laser printer for me works great. Injets will dry and plug up if not used periodically. Can go months without use with no issues.

Canon. They have several in that price range. They also do a beautiful job printing photographs.

Recommendation for printer

They have all come into general parity. Look for ine that “docks” the ink cartridges as they save ink. If you print regularly its cheapest to join an ink membership from the manufacturer. Other than that ink is the real cost with printers anymore. Go online for deals.

The cost of the printer is not very important. It's the cost of the printer ink that will bankrupt you. Find a printer that uses the least amount of ink regardless of the cost of the printer itself. You'll be much better off.

HP2650
Never switch the printer off as the most common problem is clotting of the printer heads. |
I have good luck with HP. I currently have an HP budget black and white 1102W Laserjet and HP OfficeJet Pro 6970 Color. A consideration is it you require color, be prepared to pay more for ink. I would recommend a basic laserjet if color is not required.
Jus' sayin' |

will you use it. If, you must have color, at the price you are looking for you will likely only find ink jet. The cost per print on ink jet is higher than lazer and the print speed is slower. Also since the inks are water soluble, any water will ruin your print. Another major problem with ink jet is that left unused the ink dries up in the spray head. As happened with mine and for many people I know once the ink dries on the head the solution is to toss the printer. They claim you can try to clean the head. I tried-it didn't work. Aside, the printer I had took 5 ink cartridges and they cost $30 each. Over it's life I changed the cartridges as I used to use it far more than when I retired, like 4-5 times. So in a printer that I bought for $100 I spent many times that on the ink. The same is true for the lazer printers. The device is likely a loss leader for the companies. They make money on the ink and or lazer cartridge. I currently have a Samsung B&W only lazer. I expect it is discontinued as I bought it 3-4 years ago. It has been fine. Does scans, faxes, prints and connects to your cell phone. I paid $100 for it. They give you enough ink for about 500 copies. If, I recall that is more than they gave me with my former color ink jet. Ink, you replace the entire section so you get a new head etc. If I recall the assembly is like $90 new. People do sell refilled ones as they do with ink jets. I never used or bought the refilled ones. You do save a little. Is it worth the trouble, questionable loss of quality, do you really get the claimed number of prints? Not to me. Value? Imagine trying to make that thing, pack it in a 4 color designed to ship box and selling it for $100-200. Amazing value. Cost per print ink jet, not counting machine cost or life is about 15 cents a page in B&W color like 20 plus. Lazer is like 5 cents. |
printer for sale
I have one I will sell you it is like brand new HP with ink $50
