Sewer Clean Out?
 

We have very recently purchased our first TV home, and are trying our best to become familiar with it. This particular assembly was completely covered over with St. Augustine grass. It just felt a bit funny underfoot, and I started uncovering it to find these three broken items. I assume they are sewer line clean outs, but I can't figure out why there are three different cover plates. The pipe that is uncovered has a cover, but it fits lonely over a broken piece.

What are they? Should they be replaced with stuff that is not broken? What type of service do I even call?

The one at the top of the photo looks like a cleanout for the main sanitary sewer line. The other two may just be discarded pipes.

IMO if the green one connected you would probably be smelling sewer gas? IMO have no sewer problem you can probably find right size caps at HD or Lowe’s and cap them off let grass grow back over them.

the pipe with no cap on it (it has one but I took it off for the photo) does not smell of sewer gas. But it does connect to something hollow, that echoes, and when a car ran over a manhole cover, I heard the echo from that pipe. The rectangular cover, which as you can see is also cracked, I did not disassemble. I am currently mystified. I'm hoping someone can demystify me.

I'm going to take a few guesses. The top one definitely appears to be a sewer cleanout, but may not be. Remove the cap and you should be able to tell if it is a sewer cleanout or not.

The second one looks vaguely like a cover for sprinkler control valve. Mine look different and I have several of them, but you might look inside to see what you can find out.

The third (open pipe) might be access to a shutoff valve of some kind. Shine a light down the pipe and see what you can find.

I suspect (a guess) the one you removed the cap from may have been French drain at one time beings you noise from street drain. The white one with square on top is sewer clean out. I have no clue what the rectangle cracked one is? If it was me I would take lid off, shine flashlight down see what it is or what you can see?

Call the villages home warranty department.

I agree that the white one with the plug is your soil pipe cleanout.

How far from the house is this? Is it close enough for a gutter downspout? You say you heard an echo from the open one when a car ran over a manhole cover. Does the manhole cover say "sewer" on it or possibly "storm" or "storm drain" ? If it does say storm, considering that the pipe is above the ground, it's probably for a gutter.

The one with a broken lid looks like a shutoff to me. Pop the lid off. Do you know where your shutoff is? You should find it in case you get a leak on the wrong side of a valve and need to shut your house off.

There are often two sewer clean outs. Where they meet the sewer line, one will bend toward the house, one toward the street. The third pipe is a mystery.

One of the pipes might go to your neighbors house. They usually put them all in the same area.

They are all functional accesses to your plumbing system and should not be kept buried in case they are needed by a plumber - I keep my clear of grass to allow easy access if needed - check all 3 with a flashlight to ensure they are clear of objects the go to Home depot or Lowes (with the broken top & a picture of the smaller one) Normally there are two together. I had an acclaim irrigation controller box and had the sensor buried under a cap in the front side yard so one may be that. If one is a sensor it easy to see when you check. Don't bury or allow grass to cover anything that may have to be accessed by a plumber or other workmen if needed. Good Luck

Thanks for the advice to call the Home Warranty Department. I didn't even know there was such an entity.

I have the same setup. The large pipe is the main sewer clean out. One of the smaller is my sewer clean out and the other my neighbors sewer clean out.

It could be a drain maybe that area held water.

here is a new construction picture, one is a clean out, the other one looks like the site location after is was cut down to ground. Maybe it is a location identifier for the clean out.
