Morton’s Neoroma

Has anyone out there experienced burning/searing pain between the 3rd & 4th toe that radiates down to the pad of the foot? I just did yesterday & was very surprised that a friend suggested it could be Morton’s Neuroma. I looked it up & am pretty sure that’s it. Haven’t seen a doctor yet. Any suggestions?

I had one diagnosed about five years ago. Doctor recommended surgery (of course). I opted for meditation and visualizing it as already healed. It went away within a month or so.

I did the same thing with a torn meniscus, but that's another story.

Several years ago, I walked way too far, on cobblestone streets, wearing the wrong shoes. One of my feet began to hurt, a lot, and fit the description of Morton's Neuroma.

I went to a podiatrist. He gave me a shot in my foot. I think it was somewhere at the base of the toes. Don't remember exactly where. It worked right away. But that was in Ohio. . .

If you are in TV now, I recommend seeing Dr. Shannon Floyd. She helped me when I tore a tendon.

I have had this and the doctor gave me a cortisone shot and told me to get to rid of any tight fitting shoes. I have not had a problem since.

I had surgery last summer for Morton’s Neuroma, it always felt like I was stepping on a marble, the pain is gone, but it will always be numb, because they remove the nerve. Numb is better than ouch !

Try Brooks shoes, you can get them at Good Feet. Or a metatarsal insert for your shoes. You need to spread your toes away from each other and not scrunch them up. Massage helps too if you can stand a really FIRM hand on the bottoms of your feet.

Also if you normally wear shoes with pointed toes, you need to not do that anymore. And if you normally wear heels higher than 1.5", you need to stop doing that as well.

Wide toe box, low heel, metatarsal support.

My husband experienced all of the symptoms of this last year for several months and it went away on it's own....Actually it was about an inch up into the foot, not directly between the toes, but up from the third and fourth toe. He didn't have it checked because it was the Pandemic. And it wasn't life threatening.

Vionic shoes or their inserts . I was in pain from this condition for months , can’t walk around barefoot anymore , only wear Vionic flip flops or inserts in other shoes ( helps ALOT). I bought a CBD ointment from the Marion market “ worlds remedy CBD 2000mg” stuff is magic... stopped the pain in seconds. I never had used CBD before but the guy at the market asked if I had any pain “ yeah my foot “ gave me a pea size of the ointment put it on my foot and said” I’m walking to the end and if it helps I’ll be back” I literally took 3 steps turned around and bought the tin. My husband didn’t believe me til his knee was bothering him and he tried it now he uses it more than I do

One thing to remember about CBD products is that it’s classified like the other herbal remedies sold at so-called health food stores. The amount of active ingredient listed on the label is not checked by the FDA. Your ointment with 2000 milligrams (that is, 2 grams) may actually have what it says on the bottle, while another brand right next to it that claims to have the same amount may actually have only 200 mg instead of 2000. Like all of these herbal remedies, some brands are consistently powerful and some, even though well-known brands, are not giving you what you pay for. This is a case where it helps to get the advice of those who use a specific product made by a specific brand that turns out to work and try that one.

I’ve tried it only once—when a friend gave me some CBD cream to rub on a pulled back muscle near my spine—and it took away the pain within a couple minutes. That lasted until I got home and could sleep away the muscle pull and relax. My girlfriend uses a specific brand of CBD gummies to help her sleep if she wakes in the middle of the night. (SunMed Hemp Supplement Peach and Watermelon Rings with a claimed 30 mg of hemp, though it admits that it might only be 25 mg. CBD you ingest doesn’t need to be nearly as strong as what gets soaked up through your skin, but it works differently. She uses SunMed Topical Cream to rub on her aching hands, no CBD content given, but that’s about $250 for four ounces, though as one uses a pea-sized amount, that probably works out to a couple dollars per use.)

The only thing that I've experienced that sounds similar was when I had a 4th metatarsal stress fracture. Staying off the foot for 6 weeks healed it. But if you can afford CBD oil, as others have mentioned, I hear it's amazing.

JMintzer 03-07-2021 07:26 AM

OrangeBlossomBaby nailed it... Brooks are great sneakers (I wear them daily at the office), but they are not the end all...

Sounds like a Morton's Neuroma, but without an examination, I can't be sure... Radiating pain is usually not a symptom of a stress fracture...

Wider toe box, insoles with a metatarsal pad (a small protrusion across the ball of the foot), can all work.

If they don't, a cortisone injection or two can certainly help.

For really stubborn cases, surgery -may- be indicated...

P.S. I'm a Podiatrist...

It was so painful to walk that I had surgery. Had it a few years ago and have been pain free since.

Medicines? Cholesterol medicine will destroy your tendons...... most statins.... usually takes years

I saw a podiatrist for this last year. He said it was either Mortons neuroma or something else like bursitis. He said same treatment either way. I got custom orthotics and it went away in a few weeks. I think a cortisone shot was offered, but I didn't want that. In hindsight, I would take the shot, if I didn't want to spend the money on orthotics. He said I could stop using the orthotics when the pain goes away and use them again occasionally as needed, which I have.

I tried over the counter metatarsal pads which didn't help. Also tried over the counter Superfeet orthotics which helped a little but not enough.

Gooduck!

As a mailman, I experienced a similar pain when it was time to buy new shoes. I could barely walk and had to walk on the side of my foot to keep from getting the zinging pain from the ball of my foot down to the end of my longest toe. I always bought Rockie Athletics shoes that lasted me close to 2 years, walking a mail route everyday. Great shoes.

I have Morton’s Neuroma. So painful. Got 2 cortisol injections 2 years ago and 3rd and 4th toe still numb. Like other said, wide toe boxed shoes, no more cute narrow toed high heels for me. 3rd hour of Pickleball, I get the burning pain but goes away quickly after I put my feet up. Go to a good podiatrist.

Yes. I got a cortisone shot from foot ortho and it resolved and never came back. Does it feel like you are stepping on a marble?

Thank you all for good info & advice!:coolsmiley:

easyliving 03-07-2021 05:51 PM

Yes, I had one on each foot. It’s like a cyst wrapped around a nerve. Very painful. I had my left foot operated on 97. Then in 2005 my right foot. No problems now. I think I got mine by doing an elliptical machine too much.

Morton's Neuroma

Yes, I had a Morton's Neuroma in the early1980's on my right foot. Excruciatingly painful! I had it surgically removed. The tumor was about the size of a BB. I have no feeling in the third or fourth toes. But having it removed relieved the pain completely.

I had the same symptoms and Mayo Clinic, Rochester MN diagnosed as the Mortons Neuroma. I was given a cream to use on bottom of foot to help numb it,; however not that effective. Also suggested getting small foot pads to stick inside of shoe in that area. That helped a lot, and also not going on walks for a while. It was good after a few months.

paulat585 03-08-2021 05:25 PM

Just saw podiatrist Nicole Hancock for this. She glued some pads on my custom orthotics & told me to by some pads on Amazon. They got lost in the "mail." Use a pad a few years ago for this and it worked. Pain disappeared for about 5 years, then came back.

KathyW 03-08-2021 08:00 PM

I have Morton's Neuroma - only happens when I wear narrow enclosed toe shoes. Doctor told me to stick a pad in my shoe, and it worked. No more pain - also helps to wear a wider toe shoe. The pad supposedly lifts that area up slightly.

Yes. Very much so as it is a fairly common concern. I am a retired board certified physician, medical/surgical foot specialist, new to the villages who practiced for 34 years. Be happy to speak with you about it over the phone if you like. You may reach me at Ultra15000@ aol.com.

tsmall22204 03-09-2021 06:00 AM

Yes, see a doctor.

I have had MN for over 10years. My Dr in Virginia Beach gave me a shot with alcohol instead of cortisone and it worked great until a few years ago. Have not been able to find a Dr here that will use alcohol as it kills some of the nerve. Better than surgery. Let me know if anyone finds a Dr here that will use alcohol.

Had Morton’s neuroma removed many years ago and it was VERY successful. In the last couple of years though. I had the same situation on the other foot. Had it x rayed (Dr. Carter/Ocala. Turns out I had fractured toes that cased the same pain. (Remembered decades ago I foolishly tried to cross a street without observing active turn lane. Although I only suffered some bruising. Never had the situation n properly treated. Too late now. However wearing aaa shoe with “elevated arch support - particularly Sandles or flip flops that allow those toes to spread out has made

The situation comfortable.

rmd2 03-09-2021 10:58 AM

I felt that and put a rug on the kitchen ceramic tile floor where I stand the most. No more problems.

rmd2 03-09-2021 11:04 AM
