Forwarding our mail to the Villages

Hello-
We will be moving to the Villages and forwarding our mail at the end of this month. What is the procedure for obtaining a new Mail box at the Villages?
Thank you
Julie

Thank you. So there is no charge for the villages Mail box to put in our name?

If you want a P. O. Box go to one of the post offices and rent one. They are in Fruitland Park, Wildwood, Oxford and Lady Lake. I'm sure all the mailing/packing stores located in various shopping centers around TV will rent boxes as well.

The Post Office provdes 3 keys for every box. In past years, The Villages would only give the buyer 2 keys, but, I think they now provide all 3 keys to the buyer. For a resale, the seller should provide at least 2 keys, or they should pay for a new mailbox lock.

I believe the box at the postal station is assigned to the home - when the home changes hands the box changes along with it.

We received three keys at closing in 2018.

Well that is kind of a yes and no.

When we moved here last year we had to pay about $ 150 for the privilege of having to go get our mail in a central location. Someone correct me if I am wrong but I believe it is to pay for the maintenance of the little building.

I moved in 5 years ago and didn't pay anything.

But, I would pay $150 if the Post Office would cancel my account altogether.

We purchased two homes in TV in the last three years and never paid to get our TV mailbox. We did go to the Lady Lake p.o. to get the lock changed on the box at our current home (and received 3 keys for it). The charge to USPS was about $35, I think.

We purchased our resale last year and listed in the closing documents was the charge of $ 150 for use of mailbox plus keys and we were further told it was to cover the cost of maintenance.

Guess this is a new way to collect money from new residents

I don't know, but it sounds like a bogus charge.

Well we closed thru the villages as our home went thru their real estate dept so think it is valid

Astron 03-14-2021 05:30 AM

We also had to pay a one time mailbox fee at closing in 2020, and were told it is to cover the building maintenance.

You will automatically have a mail box but your mail will be addressed to your street address not your box number.

JoniEaton 03-14-2021 06:33 AM

If you have already bought a home, they should have given you a box number and keys. If you haven’t bought yet, you can get a post office box at the post office near to you and change that when you buy. But, remember they only forward mail for 6 months. So, if it takes longer than that you will have to put in another change of address.
If you have a house here already, you can put in the change of address from your home post office there or you can do it here. I hope this helps. Joni

Look carefully at your closing statement. $150 bucks is charged. They call it maintenance

We moved here a year ago, we had our mail held in Michigan until we closed here and then did a change of address with our new address and our mail was forwarded to our new address once the change of address was initiated. It was done online and We had very few issues during the transition.

merrymini 03-14-2021 08:26 AM

If you already closed, you paid a lump sum for the mailbox. Mail service here is horrible, more horrible than some other places, if that is possible.

A PO Box is assigned to every address in TV. If you are renting then you should -agree with the owner as to whether you can use the box while here. If not, there are ship it services that will rent you a box. If you are the owner then the box and keys are assigned to you. Be aware the location of the box at the postal station (high, low, around the corner of the station) is already assigned. If you are short and the preassigned box is on the top row, you will not be happy and there are no reported occurrences of being able to change it. There is a one time fee charged when you take ownership of the home. When you buy another home you will pay another one time fee, and so on.

My mail service here is the same as it has been everywhere - the local post office receives it in the morning and I have it by the afternoon.

There are a lot of postal stations, I may have one of the better delivery persons.

Pmarlow 03-14-2021 09:03 AM

When we moved here 1.5 years ago we were able to get the key to our new mailbox after we did the design of our home. This enabled us to change our address permanently almost 3 months before we closed. We used this mailbox while we were renting and it worked out great.

bought in january and the first amenity bill listed a $49. fee. received the second bill which listed a $100. fee, both under PO STN FEE. not sure why it was divided into two payments… to lessen the shock? so i think the $150. mentioned above is legit.

stebooo 03-14-2021 10:11 AM

Ou have a mail box assigned. Should have been told when you close. Forwarding mail is the same as always. Change of address form at PO.

Chitown 03-14-2021 10:37 AM

It’s very simple, I did it. Until you close on your home, I called one of the many UPS offices in the Villages I gave them my credit card number and had the box for 3 mos. The nice thing about the UPS office is that your forwarding address is the UPS office address, not a PO Box address. For instance if the address of the UPS office is 123 SPRING ROAD, The Villages, FL, your address would be 123 Spring Road #142, THE VILLAGES, Fl 32159. The 142 represents your box number. Good luck

kp11364 03-14-2021 11:18 AM

So once you have your mailbox, what happens if you order something from Amazon and it comes in a large box? Do you get a notice in your mailbox that you have a package and to go somewhere else to pick it up?

Joorn59 03-14-2021 11:28 AM

Correct. You’ll get a key to a parcel locker at your postal station

We just closed in January 2021 and there was a 190 fee for postal station on our first utility bill. I called to inquire and was told it was a one-time fee to take care of the station. - Yes, it was 190, not 150.

Guess they decided that if people would pay 150 why not ask for more

I'm with merrimini on this. I find the mail service to be one of the few downsides to life in TV.

If you are lucky they will put the key in YOUR box and not someone else's (which can delay delivery to you by a day or two or three).

If you are very unlucky (as I have been on several occasions) they put the key in the box of someone who is a snowbird (currently NOT in TV) or on vacation or something. I have had to write to the mail delivery person several times to ask him/her to look around for my package that was allegedly delivered by Amazon to "MY" mailbox but wasn't there.

I am still waiting for the postal service to locate a Priority package that was listed in my daily Informed Delivery email before Christmas. No idea what it was or who sent it. All I know is I track all my packages (I buy a lot of stuff online) and that one never did show up.

YMMV.

k.

You seem to have been blessed with an incompetent mailman/woman/person.

Been here a year and find the mail service to be ok. Not the fastest but not the slowest either

We use it too but often mail that is supposed to arrive that day will not show up till the next day.

HORNET 03-14-2021 06:49 PM

Wrong

HORNET 03-14-2021 06:53 PM

Mail is picked up twice daily and forwarded to Orlando. Any delays could be caused anywhere

HORNET 03-14-2021 06:55 PM

If the resale is not with The Villages, then you are your own to receive the right number of keys

bpascani 03-15-2021 09:42 PM

No fee for the mail box station that you get the keys for, for the house you bought. You give your physical address of your new house as your forwarding address. The keys that you are given at closing will tell you which box at the mail station is yours. No need to rent a P O Box at one of the post offices which are usually 4 + miles away.

There is a fee for getting keys and using the mail box station. Not sure how long ago it started but you do get to pay for the privilege.
