I was told that Cane Garden CC Restaurant has been sold?

I was told that Cane Garden Restaurant has been sold. Does anyone know any of the details such as to who and when it happens or has it already happened.

Yes most of us know how good Cane used to be and how far they have fallen in the past couple of years.

Can only hope it is true.

JSR22 03-13-2021 03:43 PM

They brought in a new manager several weeks ago. Food and service has greatly improved.

The Developer owns all of them and leases the business out. The leases run for five years. Maybe the lease is up and a new person is renting the space and running the restaurant.

Cane Garden changed hands Dec 2018. I believe the owners of Amerikanos took over at that time. I am in the not a fan category since that occurred. Before that time the place was half way decent with the exception of the battle axe hostess.

village dreamer 03-13-2021 07:11 PM

its time for a make over. and a good cleaning.

Yes the Developer owns the building but I don't think he owns the interior tables, kitchen equipment, bar stools, carpet, etc and good will or bad will which effects the value of the business. The balance of the lease can be sold if the developer approves the transfer of the lease. So yes the business can be sold. That is what happened when Cane Garden changed hands several years ago. So are you saying the developer owns the table ware, glasses and kitchen equipment? I don't think so. Those are the things that I believe have value and can be sold.

Many business are sold when the seller doesn't own the building it happens every day as long as the owner of the building is ok with the lease transfer.

I’ve eaten at Cane twice in the last ten days & both times food was excellent... service was a bit slow only because they were so busy

tophcfa 03-13-2021 11:12 PM

Ruh Roh Rastro, could the Hacienda Hills recking ball be coming to Cane Garden????

Not a chance.

mike1946 03-14-2021 05:13 AM

I would have said that about Hacienda !!

Rwirish 03-14-2021 05:43 AM

False rumor

bilcon 03-14-2021 06:52 AM

Same owner, except he must have woken up to the fact that the place was horrible. Food was horrible, service horrible. A few months ago I ordered a cheese burger to go, medium rare with everything except lettuce. When I got home, there was a overdone cheeseburger sitting in grease in the box. Nothing else. No roll, no fries. Seriously. Since they brought in a new manager, new bartenders and a new chef, the food is much better, service is much better and the happy hour is until 6pm . I was a loyal customer for years, and I am very glad they have turned things around.

coconutmama 03-14-2021 07:33 AM

Happy Hour til 6? Whoo Hoo! That should bring some customers back. Now that we’ve had our vaccines, will give it a visit. Thanks. (Your burger experience was totally unacceptable)

merrymini 03-14-2021 08:20 AM

Had a terrible experience about a month ago and was not going back but have been told by friend of a visit last week of a vastly improved situation at Cane. Will give it another try.

Villages Kahuna 03-14-2021 09:27 AM

Agree! CG used to be our “go to” restaurant. Then the food quality began to slide and the coup de grace was the Health Department shutting them down for multiple problems. Just the news describing what was found would keep us away even if it did open. It not only dropped from the top to the bottom of the list, but off the list altogether.

In The Villages good news travels fast. But for those not being careful, bad news travels even faster.

I agree with you about everything, but NEVER noticed a "Battleax Hostess".

Out of curiosity is not the sister the developer also and by the way did we throw the other sister under the bus ?

What I would like to know is IF Cane Garden is for sale & some of the newer residents may not know it but why have any business in TV selling or just closing their doors. Katie Belles closes, & one of the Too Jays closed their doors. Don’t understand, can’t they keep up with their bills or is business just that slow. I’m sure there’s others!

I have never known a business to close if it is making a good profit, unless it was to move to bigger and better premises, or the owner sold it to take the profit, retired or died.
No profit, no business, unless run by Government!

If you read the health dept visits to restaurants you would never eat out again. Just remember, roaches are not a sign of a dirty kitchen. Most of the time they come in on the bottoms of boxes from food deliveries. I did not remember Cane being closed by the Health Dept.

OK, I agree with you but Katie Belle’s or Too Jay’s in Sumter moves to a bigger & better premises. That’s not the case here. But as a past business owner myself I know nobody would buy a losing business property, but if you can show them a profit & they are in the market buy a business or have a great location. That’s when you want to sell. Not here to argue or put TV or a business down just wondering why they’re selling. There is a reason!

PLEASE, research before you post. The buildings are owned by the Development business entity. They are leased out just like countless thousands of buildings across this country. They are not directly owned by Mr. Morse nor his sister.

The buildings are owned by the developer, not the business, private business people own the business, not managers...

Have to say we did. There were a couple hostesses at Cane over the years who seemed completely uninterested in the customers and were only interested in talking with each other. If you approached them with a question, they were not happy to be interrupted!

I believe there have been instances where a business may have been profitable, their lease came to an end, and they did not think they would be profitable at the new lease level, so they closed. This certainly happens in the "real world" quite a bit

To be fair, it is a real challenge to run a restaurant here and make a profit and still meet the prices most Villagers expect. Restaurants must rely on pre-prepared if not entire entrees than at least pre made components. AND they cannot afford to pay food preparers with education or much experience in cuisine.

Going out almost anywhere, including most of the villages, is not anything I like to do anymore. Most of the restaurants and bars are filthy and the food is all pre-made and just microwaved. Double yuck!!! Maybe after this covid stuff is done the restaurants will come back better. Kinda doubt it though.

Try Lopez or Palmer. Very impressed with both and these are NOT pre-made meals.

In general we are not overly impressed with our dinning selections, but Chop House and Blue Fin are exceptions. Both are well within our definition of good quality. Sometimes Bonefish also meets our standards of very good golf cart accessible eats.
