Did you deposit your absentee ballot in a drop box? Baxley wants to stop you
Our local state Senator, Baxley, has introduced a bill which will very significantly make it harder for all of us to vote. One would think with a huge percentage of Villagers voting by mail he'd think twice about introducing new hoops. There have been no allegations of problems in Florida with the system as it now exists.
His bill makes two very significant changes. Presently you need to make your request for a mail ballot every four years. His bill changes that to every other year. The county will need to notify you by mail paying the postage cost if you have failed to renew. This will be very expensive for the county. And the present system where there are ballot drop boxes at all early voting locations and the very heavily used one at the Gold dome building will be eliminated. The only place you will be able to drop off an absentee ballot will be directly at the office of the Supervision of elections. Here is the language from his bill: Quote:

Remember when everyone was wanted to vote ? Years of investigations have shown how well we do voting, so you just wonder why this rush to fix what isn’t broken. |

Marion County requires requesting mail-in ballot every 2 years.
I'm fine with that. |

I do not see this as a big expense. There were 22,000 absence tee voters in 2020 for Sumter County. If even 10% do not respond the cost would be about $1200.00 for card mailing. This not a lot of money for a county that is growing by vast numbers every year. Current information is better then ballots being discarded. the cost to print a post card is a lot less than a large ballet with two envelopes.

Sounds like an a voter suppression bill to me.

A good step towards maintaining election integrity. We are living through the result of the lack of integrity in certain states.

This posting perfectly represents what the new people to the villages that we have spoken to are complaining about.
They are afraid that the politics they left behind are here and they, and a lot of us here, hate. Good job moderator. |
Make Election Day a national holiday. Shut it all down and go vote in person. Make Walmart and Publix polling places. No early voting no mail in ballots. Integrity of elections restored.

the REAL problem is Dominion, imo

Just think if everyone had to use those pesky photo ids, that are available to anyone who can't afford them. But then, THAT would eliminate one person, one vote. |
In this age group of voters a high percentage of folks die over a 4 year time span. Applying every 2 years is a good move. To many ballots were returned from folks who died before the election. Final numbers are not yet verified, but the numbers will shock you when released.

Interesting. I have lived in many states in my lifetime. Never have I seen a state send out mail in ballots to anyone until I moved to Florida. I used early voting in every state as I traveled constantly for business and voted ahead of time. I think the individual should put forth the effort to address the situation of voting properly to meet their needs and handle it themselves. I am against the government in mailing unsolicited ballets to anyone that has not requested it for specific elections. Use common sense for a change.

Shouldn't call it a mail in ballot, instead it should be called a drop it off in a box ballot..........

I support the legal voting by citizens, voting should be on Election Day and anyone unable go to the polls ,obtain a proper ballot with ID and mail it directly to the election board to arrive before voting ends on Election Day. Photo ID should be required nationwide at every election ,national, state and local.

Everyone should vote - in person - and present a form of ID. (of course retain absentee voting for military and those who have a good reason not able to vote in person). Many people volunteer with organizations that help people get them registered - why not include helping people get the required IDs, as well? I volunteer each year to help people get to voting places.... as do many others. For those who are not mobile - maybe set up something like they have done for the Covid vaccines.... let those who are unable to stand in line - sit in their cars..... they seem to have the long car line thing - working really well! |
Quoting from another posting in a different forum that explains the reasoning behind Senate Bill 90 and House Bill 1....
SB90 will prohibit the use of drop boxes to return vote-by-mail ballots. The Bill also requires a voter identifier when requesting a vote-by-mail ballot. Those identifiers include the voter’s driver license number, ID card number or the last four digits of the voter’s social security number. Passing this bill in Florida will limit “vote harvesting” fraud that was found in the last general election. We need this bill passed to improve the reliability of Florida elections. HB1 will create new crimes prohibiting a person from defacing, damaging, destroying or pulling down a monument or memorial. The bill also creates penalties for aggravated rioting and inciting a riot. The bill will require a person arrested for offenses relating to rioting, unlawful assembly or mob intimidation to be held in custody until he or she appears for a first appearance hearing and a court determines bond. This bill will act as a deterrent to the riots experienced in Portland, Seattle and other US cities over the past year. |
We do allow for the discussion of local issues but when it turns partisan it will get shut down.
If you can't discuss a topic without using the terms, Liberal, Conservative, Republican, Democrat, Blue, Red, etc. the thread will be shut down every time and infractions will be issued. Thread closed. Moderator |
