I guess you're one of those that let the (visiting) kids take your golf cart out on their own and not know what they are doing with it. :coolsmiley:

Guessing is assuming that you know this poster, and if they have grandchildren. Today watched a 70yo (sadly I am familiar with this person) pull out from neighborhood road onto Canal, right in front of 2 carts and multiple cars. Everyone locked up breaks. Driver who almost caused a accident went on their merry way, clueless.

Since the rule is 14 to drive a cart, until it’s changed, they will always be young drivers. Not all young drivers are evil, and yet, there are older residents that scare the crap out of us.

And there are many grandparents who allow younger, and are an endangering others. But that mind set will not change.

Fredman 03-28-2021 12:36 PM

Saw a young boy sitting on grandpa’s lap driving cart yesterday.

At least grandpa was in the cart. How young?

He looked between 65 to 75.

Velvet 03-28-2021 01:21 PM

Oh well, I’m doubling my cart insurance.

La lamy 03-28-2021 02:56 PM

Sure is bizarre seeing young adolescents driving, but there's always the risk of facing reckless driving around here, no matter who's at the wheel.

Stu from NYC 03-28-2021 04:50 PM

Some of these kids are better drivers than older folks.

Two weeks ago someone drove their golf cart into lake Bonita.

Would not have thought it was possible.

JohnN 03-28-2021 06:53 PM

My neighbor let his granddaughter drive while he rode wingman in 2019.
She crashed the cart into the rear of my car while I was parked in my driveway.

No telling how it happened, I'm glad it wasn't worse and no one got hurt.
The golf cart took most of the damage.

I doubt he was actually driving it since his feet most likely didnt reach the pedals. Im sure Grandpa had control of the wheel.

FromNY 03-29-2021 05:52 AM

Some Villages just think the rules are for other people not them or their sweet grandchildren. Stay alert and protect yourself . Of course if someone gets hurt or killed it will not be on them. Sad situations occur all over.

mlmarr1 03-29-2021 05:56 AM

Will be interesting for the owner when they find out they are liable..

... a LOT of grandparents/parents ALLOWING them to drive and the kids have no clue what they are doing! I was almost hit twice in one day by a kid and then the grandfather (or older person with the kid) was laughing about it!!

I noticed a young boy (no more than 10), driving a golf car with probably his grandfather. I mentioned to him that you need to be 14 to drive. He said he didn’t know that and then switched seats to drive. Didn’t want to see the boy get in an accident and then g’dad get sued.

I saw a dad and mom with the kid on the lap of the driver. I thought to myself, if you can't do it in a car, it's more dangerous when done in a cart! 😬

gbarry 03-29-2021 06:35 AM

According to the golf cart safety course offered by Village Insurance, if an underaged child is caught driving a golf cart not only will they be fined but their infraction will follow them back to their home state and they will not be able to get a drivers license until they are 18 or 21.

Personally I wish the golf cart drivable age would be raised to 15 with a driving permit, to have the kids (hopefully) know the rules of the road. That is the law in Florida to drive a car, I believe.

It is particularly dangerous to have clueless kids merging with car traffic when the cart lane ends. Not to mention at 4-way stops within villages, gate crossings, etc. Golf carts are not toys. Parents & grandparents should know better.

NotGolfer 03-29-2021 07:36 AM

A few years ago some young men---think they were older teens---were driving Granpop's cart recklessly (it was observed by many) down near LSL Winn Dixie, when they over-turned the cart. They got arrested and Granpop's cart was damaged. IF someone had been seriously hurt or killed that would have brought things up several notches. These vehicles aren't to be treated like carnival rides. We all can give instances where we've seen adults lack of driving skills as well. Amazing we don't have more accidents in our community!!

People blow stop signs all the time (in both carts and cars). Plus don't utilize the turn lanes properly neither. Makes one wonder "IF" they took driver's ed or if they did, they forgot what they had learned.

Stu from NYC 03-29-2021 08:14 AM

People here play fast and loose with traffic safety.

Vast majority of people do not even do a rolling stop at stop signs and most do not use turn signals.

Sumter county police can reduce the real estate tax by a point or two by giving out tickets.

Bjeanj 03-29-2021 08:58 AM

What was explained to me is if an underage youth gets any type of ticket, they will be unable to get their learner’s permit until they’re 18. That should be a sobering thought.

This is exactly why it’s a retirement community. Can you believe what TV would look like if they didn’t have rules it’ll start looking like the way our country is going. So TV had better just PO some people & enforce your rules & regulations. Don’t mess up a good thing!

yes, and that on-the-lap spot is reserved for the dog!:icon_wink:

Lots of adults with bad golf cart driving skills out there also It all falls on deaf ears

Jpressley 03-29-2021 10:00 AM

Lots of seniors driving dangerously all year long

Would you also support having a valid drivers license at any age a requirement to drive a golf cart ?

Catalina36 03-29-2021 11:40 AM

Just a Note, if you have golf cart insurance. Only the policy holder and spouse is covered to drive the cart!!!!!

Catalina36 03-29-2021 11:42 AM

It won’t be cute to let your grandkids drive your cart when they have a accident!!!!

Not the vast majority, but a significant minority. The term vast majority would apply to cyclists. Turn signal usage appears to be about 25-30%

In the last two days I've seen kids driving golf carts and actually driving safer and being more courteous than the adults.

If they are younger than the required age to drive I’d like to see the license of the person who gives them permission to drive, revoked. They endanger the kids and everyone else on the road. There is a reason for age limits and they blatantly break the law.

This is not true as a blanket statement. Normally the vehicle is insured. You may have exclusions on your policy to reduce the cost of the insurance. In our case, the cart is insured no matter who the driver is. For a myriad of reasons we wanted it this way.

A cart is a dangerous weapon.. same as a car. (which has an age minimum 16 and needs a license. Cart should be the same restrictions, and insured. Both can kill.

This thread the OP wrote: "kids driving carts recklessly in TV now.", not about adults driving recklessly.
One can tell by some responses who let their brats drive their golf cart while pointing fingers at the adults who actually pay to live and drive their carts here.

bpascani 03-30-2021 04:49 PM

We solved that problem before it even comes up. We (hubs and me) are the only authorized drivers.
