Investment tip of the year

Since the announcement by Transportation Secretary Buttigieg that he would like to impose a Vehicle Mileage Tax, I have decided to invest heavily into all manufacturers of Digital Rollback Odometer Devices. You can thank me later.

In reality, I read that these devices can easily be made at home. If this tax is put into place I can already think of a lot of ways to get around it.

Years ago the used car dealers used to disconnect the speedo cable, and wind the clocks back using an electric hand drill.

How will these devices wipe out memory in onboard GPS and connected services devices. Just got a call from the dealer today to schedule service they knew the exact mileage on my car.

Investment Painting Contractors 03-29-2021 01:36 PM

Same thing with your cell phone

Since the Pandemic we have not been traveling much. Reading about your car GPS
I finally know why we were getting E Mails and Junk mail from funeral homes and cemetarys. I only use the phone when I travel so it has'nt moved in months. I'm suprised the rescue squad hasn't shown up. Len

If the system/devices were made by man, man has the knowledge to bypass them.

I should have said hu-man, or mankind, sorry.

Chi-Town 03-29-2021 04:06 PM

The question is if buying the rollback hardware/software is cost justifiable.

If they knew the exact mileage, they probably connected to your car via the internet and read the odometer. I doubt that they use continuous GPS tracking for every mile that you drive.

If you mean hard wired connected somehow that's a negative. My car is less than one year old and not been to the dealer since the day I purchased it. I will tell you this car has enough wiz-bangs it can drive itself. It yells at me to put my hands back onto the steering wheel or will disable features.

So give us a tip. What companies should we invest in that would have the resources to accomplish this feat that must span across hundreds if not thousands of proprietary software programs not to mention wireless transmission patent implications ? I'm in if you can steer me with logic.

Not hard wired, but most newer cars have a built-in modem that allows the manufacturer to connect to it and read the odometer, gas gauge, oil level, and other electronic information on the vehicle. There is probably an app that you can install on your smart phone where you can read the same information and even unlock the doors or start the car with your phone.

What do you mean by connect to it ? Obviously they have wireless feedback that connected to my car to obtain information without my assistance. Thus my point if the data exist how does one wipe it out after the fact IE turn back the odometer.

I don't know how to turn back the odometer. But, your car has a built-in modem that allows anyone with the IP address and internet access to connect to it and read the available information stored on it. The manufacturer has the IP address for the modem in your car. It is just like any computer or other internet device that you connect to via the internet and share information.

I will just start driving in reverse ! That’ll do it! That’s the ticket! I think I can probably drive better in reverse than some I see driving daily although roundabouts might get tricky and the neck may get a little stiff

If they require a mandatory GPS installed in your vehicle, there’s not gonna be much you can do about it. I don’t think this will ever come to pass anyway. Just another typical bonehead idea from this current embarrassing administration!

RouseysMom 03-30-2021 05:33 AM

Didn’t Mayor Pete already ROLL BACK this tax? 🤪

rstebbins 03-30-2021 05:37 AM

They have talked about a tax like this for years. Electric and Hybid cars cause the MPG to go up, so states take in less in gas taxes. So they want to figure another way to tax those high MPG cars since the gasoline tax does not work. Also, anyone with a GM car with OnStar has their mileage and car condition reported to OnStar on a regular basis. I always get emails saying when I need service based on mileage.

jimkerr 03-30-2021 06:10 AM

This is bad investment advice!

Big brother knows everything we are doing. Your phone, alexa, charge cards, etc. Soon they will block us from doing anything they don't like. Just look at our border, any news?

Bay Kid 03-30-2021 06:27 AM

Who already makes more money per gallon? TAX, TAX, TAX

bonrich 03-30-2021 06:33 AM

Sounds like we may have to be a two golf cart household, and park the car.

allsport 03-30-2021 06:41 AM

You do know that is illegal.

Marykschulz 03-30-2021 07:22 AM

Why do so many feel they can disregard laws? They don’t want to pay taxes but will be the first to complain about bad roads. I guess taxes are only for others.

Lindaws 03-30-2021 07:27 AM

Butti is a ..........!

Luckytwo 03-30-2021 08:10 AM

My Car flashing message “Take coffee break”, when driving long distance without break.

irishwonone 03-30-2021 08:11 AM

Maybe we’ll have to disconnect the hour meters on our golf carts too.🤩

CaptainMeso 03-30-2021 08:11 AM

Oh come on now did you really have to do that? Everybody obviously knows what he meant. A hu”man”.

CaptainMeso 03-30-2021 08:18 AM

Hear Hear!!!

Sure, cheating is always good!! Can we get some information on how to shoplift from the big box stores? Or maybe, you know, disconnect all the pollution controls from our vehicles? Cause societal rules and laws don’t apply to us.

dougawhite 03-30-2021 11:37 AM

If Pete is trying to compensate for loss of gas tax revenue due to electric/hybrid vehicles, it should be a simple matter to charge a yearly fee to owners of electric/hybrid vehicles that is the average of what they didn't pay in gas taxes for that year. This can be done as part of the vehicle registration system.

Seems like a much much easier way to do it vs. continuously monitoring every car in the US. But this is the government we're talking here so.....

Amusing but, we already have several Vehicle Mileage taxes. One third of what we pay for gasoline is tax. They used to but no longer do show this on the pump. There is also tolls.

A friend used to say, they have so many ways to pluck the chicken we do not realize we are bald.

We are actually the problem. We demand government services. We think the government should pay for it. We forget this is government of the people, by the people
for the people.

An easy solution, that will never happen. I see you want........... Based on ..............
your cost will be .................. Do you still want it at your cost?

Tmarkwald 03-30-2021 07:00 PM

I don't pay any attention to Butt-Jiggle .....
