Cop help needed -- advice on police procedure

I am writing a police procedural book and need advice from a retired police officer. This will be a comedic book.

A burned-out police officer just waiting to retire is selected for a "virtual policing" experiment. He is forced to wear a dinner-plate-sized computer/camer that spots "crimes" and reports them. I need to know call signs police report through their radios.

If you are a retired police officer willing to help, send your email address to zendog3@mac.com. You will be credited if I ever finish the book.

You can make up your own. They vary by jurisdiction.

Your research will no doubt show that cop lingo varies significantly by region/city. What you might hear on the air in Dallas will be different from what you would hear in Los Angeles, or Boston. Plus, many agencies have adopted plain-speak, and dumped the 10-codes entirely. Wherever the setting for your book is to take place, you will want an assist from someone with knowledge of that locale. Otherwise, it won't come off sounding right. Kinda like writing a story about a hospital procedural in the South, but all the doctors have Norwegian accents!

Its different with each region and county and state. Not one set of call signs anywhere

Some days I feel Signal 5 as if I was in a Signal 4 and 53. I remember going 10-7 for the last time. No more 10-18’s to a Signal 23 for me.

Right. As an example, Miami-Dade County has used a code different from the 10 Code for many years. QSL means acknowledge, QRM means repeat your message, 29 is a robbery, 26 is a burglary, 34 is a disturbance, etc.

Cops, general, The Villages

Since we’re on the topic, do any of the Police Scanner apps work around the Villages? I used Police Scanner 5-0 up north. But haven’t been able to pull in anything in the area on that App?

Neils 04-04-2021 01:28 PM

Many depts now use digital technology that scanners do not receive

I can imagine happening in The Villages

I work on several projects at a time.
I am about halfway through a book tentatively called, "Witness Protection." In this book, a group of people has been placed in the witness protection program in The Villages. One of them has been murdered. The others are trying to find the murderer while staying alive.

It is a fun book. I write about these old people reverting to their thug lives. The book features all local places and activities we engage in every day. Unfortunately, the developer is a possible killer. I'm thinking it may be hard to disguise this enough to get it published.

Although I must say, The Villages LLC was pretty nice about letting us use the term The Villages an a book about to be published called "Murder of a Beer Buddy" a comedic murder mystery set in TV,
