Dutch translator
I have a letter written to me by a great aunt in the Netherlands several years ago. I can’t read it because I don’t read Dutch. I wonder if there is anyone in the villages who might translate the letter for me.

Google Translate Better yet take picture of pages paste it in translator and hit enter? |
I took two semesters of Reading Dutch at the U of MN but was usually only reading children's books in Dutch.
I was the only student in the class so got a lot of attention. This was back in the 1989- 1990 though. I could make out some of it but that would be all.... |
While I have never used this group, I have seen lots of recommendations that it works well and for free.

The translations are much better than with Google Translator. Try them both. |
I worked for a Dutch transport company for many years, and I was told the reason all Dutch people speak English or another language, is that nobody ever bothers to learn Dutch, because it is so hard.
Not as bad as Finnish though. That is off the scale of incomprehension! |
If not, my sister-in-law has a pen pal from Holland that could do it I suspect. They visit once a year but a copy could be mailed to her and I am pretty certain she would be willing to translate it.

Go onto GOOGLE TRANSLATE.

Yes, I can do that for you. Was born and lived in Holland for 34 years.
I don’t know how to get in contact with you as I don’t want to put my contact info here. |

Go on internet and search for English to Dutch translation. Type in the text as written and see what happens. I do this when I am translating German to English text from my cousins in Austria.

Realize that Google Translate needs to improve at times. Also - though not the exact situation here - you should always "re-translate" anything you hope you are putting into a language other than English using Google Translate. For instance, Google translated "family ties" into French for me as something that the re-translation would have shown meant "Family neckties" , That is - Google used "cravatte" the French for necktie, not "lien" the French for tie. (I happened to know "cravatte" since I speak a little French, and I knew "lien" is usually link or chain but I guess it could be "tie" - This was my lesson that I should always re-translate.)

I can read Dutch but I'm not an expert at it. My parents spoke Dutch to me all my life but I never learned to read or write it since we moved to the US before I was in first grade. If you can't translate it any other way, I'm willing to give it a shot. I can probably translate most of it and have a good Dutch-English dictionary for some unknown words. Unfortunately, I'll be away from The Villages until April 18 but let me know if you'd like me to try after that. Janneke Nauta Bogyo, Village of Piedmont

I lived in Holland as a youth. So my Dutch is pretty rusty. But I can probably give you a good idea what she wrote. Email me at tjohnhall@gmail.com
