Car insurance for people over 80
My brother who is 81 is paying $1200 per year for car insurance on an 8 year old Kia Soul. Does anyone know of a source for car insurance that doesn't surcharge older driver's? His premium took a big jump up when ge turned 80.
Thanks |
Hmmm...eyesight getting poorer, reflexes almost nil, mental state + ability to focus...always on the decline. So no insurance company will give a good rate unless the deductable is very high. And why would they as the chance of an accident increases with age...especially in their 80's.

1-800-423-0567. Hartford insurance, we are not in 80's BUT our auto insurance dropped by 50% from Geico. Friends have found this to be true also.

Is that $1200 per year or for 6 months? If it is for a year, the rate sounds pretty reasonable. A lot of younger people pay more than that. The age of the car has very little to do with the rate.
One way to reduce your auto insurance in Florida is to drop the uninsured motorist coverage. It is mandatory in many states, but optional in Florida. In my opinion, it is redundant with heath insurance and not worth paying for it. Some people incorrectly think it provides liability coverage. It doesn't. |

Too many uninsured motorists in Florida and the fact they aren't insured is indicative as to how responsible they are. This coverage protects you for much more than medical bills and is something you need to have. |

Try State Farm...

I saw no big jump in my bill when I turned 80( I’m now 82) and because I consolidated my new home and car , my bill went down this month . I suspect the problem is with a combination of age and an older vehicle with none of the new safety measures. I agree with others who have said if it’s a year policy it’s not bad , o also agree with the other guy about age , reflexes, and eyesight . I should be paying more but I’m not, but don’t worry I’ll only be on the road for 4 maybe 5 years , that’s when I’ll be back to Boston , that’s been the plan since I came to Florida . I’m not dying in the sun , I prefer to walk everywhere , and see people on the sidewalks of all ages and if I get health issues ( none yet) I can be treated at Massachusetts General Hospital

Kia soul insurance
Drop the collision on an 8 year old lesser priced car. Go with just PL and PD.
The removal of collision will reduce the insurance cost quite a bit. If that vehicle is totaled, after deductible, the payout from the insurance company for it would be a couple thousand at max. |
I have 3 cars - 2 have basic insurance and one full coverage -I pay 1700 with progressive.....58 yo

We pay about the same for the auto insurance on a ten year old Toyota Camry. About $600 for six months. That’s for good coverage. Higher liability, good company coverage, including full glass coverage. No insane $1,000 deductibles. That’s also with no accidents and an excellent credit rating.
Our auto insurance is almost double, compared to what it used to cost in Minnesota last year. That’s because of how some of the Florida drivers are reckless. Weaving from lane to lane, just to get a few cars ahead. Doing stupid stuff, like racing up to stop lights, only to wait longer at the stop lights. We stay on the right lane, and let the insane drivers race ahead, with their vehicles that should be impounded for excessive noise pollution. Those people think they are living inside a video game, when they are driving. That’s the reason that your auto insurance is expensive in Florida. If those people would lose their driving privileges, had to forfeit their vehicles, and go to jail, your insurance costs would rapidly decrease. |
That is until you are hit by a motorist who has no insurance and you have to pay all the costs.

As I was hit by a person who had no insurance in the car and the traffic person took an insurance number from her husband over the phone, I learned later that the insurance was fake and also that the police could care less. The address was fake on her drivers license and the police told me not their problem. If you are in an accident ask for a real cop, the traffic people know nothing. The woman should have been arrested at the accident. She got a ticket for following too closely and nothing for no insurance in the car. I heard the traffic person say, the ticket for no insurance in your car will cost you more. Thanks Lady Lake, that was horrible.

Car Ins.
I have been trying for years to lower my car insurance rates without any luck. No accident in 40 yrs, no speeding tickets or DWIs in over 50 yrs. As soon as you put in your Zip Code it tells the Ins. Co. what to charge you no matter what your driving record is. Higher age doesn't help your case either.

Our experience is that as our vehicles age (while we get older) our premiums continue to go down......17 years experience as a resident of TV.

Dont get involved in an accident. My insurance doubled after getting rear ended with them. Would never use them again!

My husband and I are 82. I switched us to Allstate for homeowners and car insurance. We use our golf cart for just about everything and we don’t drive to the airport or cruise terminals or across country anymore. We pay by the mile for insurance. Allstate sent us a device we connected in the car which relays to them our mileage. I can’t tell you exactly how it works but they send us a notice every 3 months and charge us $135. Some how the cost of the mileage is subtracted from that. So far it has kept our insurance cheaper than it was before. My husband has dementia but had always taken care of insurance for car and home and golf cart and I am doing my best to learn this stuff. If you call an Allstate office I’m sure they can explain how this car insurance works. I did save over $2,000 dollars this year by switching all our insurance to Allstate. We had been carrying all our insurance with The Villages Insurance Co.

I've read that a low credit score raises your rates. That seems crazy to me but when they crunch their numbers apparently as a group people who can't or don't pay bills on times tend to have more auto insurance claims. There are many ways to reduce your insurance cost. You can raise your deductibles. By doing so you are self insuring smaller losses. The value of your car actually has little effect unless you are driving a particularly expensive car, or one that has a history of being stolen. The risk to the insurance company, chance of crashing into say Warren Buffet or Bill Gates does not go down due to the fact that your car has lost value due to aging. I would suggest getting other quotes for insurance. The price may be good or not. You also want to research the company quality. A company can be cheaper it they, should there be a loss pay less than what they have promised or you think they promised. Book value? My car is older. It is garaged, little driven. There is no way I could replace it for book value. |
When my insurance company wanted to raise my premium about 5 years ago, I switched to the Southern Insurance Group in Clermont, Fl. I deal with Garrett Johnson. I use them for both my homeowners and my auto coverage.

I'm over 80. My ins. was high. I went to Progressive. They installed Snap Shot (may not be right name). Had this for 6 months. My ins. went down. I had a 10 year old car. Traded for new mini-van. Ins. went down again. Very pleased.

Aren't you glad you asked

There are many octogenarians that are as you describe but there are many that have good eye site, reflexes mental state and ability to focus. why should they be penalized for the ones that are failing? |
