Parents of Disabled Young Person?
Hi all! I am wondering if there is anyone here who is the parent/guardian of a young person with disabilities? I am preparing to move there with my husband and daughter, who is an older teen with intellectual disability. I would love to ask questions of someone else who has been there!

Do you realize at Leesburg is home of beacon college, a very well regarded institution for those with special needs whether it's emotional or intellectual? I don't know if you would consider this or need it at this point. My best friends wife is retired but runs the state division of a non-profit involved in learning for the students needing additional help if you want I can put you in touch with her she lives in South Florida but might know a lot if you're interested

Yes that would be amazing, thank you!!

I have a legally blind, along with multiple disabilities, she is now 47. We are from Boston and lived in Maine for several years. Maine rolled out the red carpet. Sheltered workshop transportation, parties. We were expecting the same in Florida.., NO WAY...Florida is by far one of the worst states for support for handicap children. One official told my wife and i that if anything happened the state would take her in for 72 hours and then release her to the street. She cant reat, write or tie her shoes. I wish you the BEST OF LUCK just trust in the lord. We went through this in 2004.

there's this really cool young man who lives here with his mom, & has been here for years he says. he is wheelchair bound, but VERY active & friendly. we sat with him one night in brownwood, & he explained how he can get from his home in laurel manor all the way to sumter sq & brownwood in only his chair! what a guy! you may have seen him about as he is social on a daily basis. a major inspiration-he is so good & loveable, you will know when you meet him.:coolsmiley:
