Sound needed at squares website

Is it a legal issue that prevents the music from the squares being broadcast?

I was just watching the videos and was wondering the same thing

Mortal1 04-21-2021 06:17 PM

Gosh I hope so. Never did like someone making me listen to their music.

Try bluetooth headphones.

JoMar 04-21-2021 08:46 PM

You are wanted at the Squares to support the businesses, not sit at home and listen.

Granted....but....there are a lot of...umm .....
seasonal residents .....that like to check on what's happening at the Squares while "away".
Before I moved here I checked the Squares live every night, just waiting for my day in the sun. Living here now I still check out the live cams

regalcat 04-22-2021 06:32 AM

Granted, unless someone is disabled and cannot get to the squares

Lottoguy 04-22-2021 08:56 AM

I was told they would have to pay royalties if they aired music from this site. Then why put the little speaker link on the site then?

As I understand those cameras - they are part of the Villages security system that a computer wizard once came across and ultimately the sites spread far and wide for all to see but not listen to! BUT only the Villages security staff has access to the ability to actually move the camera's viewing angles and to listen in to what is happening on the squares - like if there was some sort of commotion that needed monitoring and communication with outside responder personnel.

The computer wizard who shared that info with me was a man to be trusted - was a straight shooter and not a tall tales teller - so I have no reason to doubt his word, He passed on to that big computer lab in the sky some time age and I still miss his wizardry lots!

trying to make sense of your post...no luck and I'm only partially ignorant. The "wanted at the squares" and "not sit home and listen" is just lacking in connective thoughts.

They want music at the squares. You can do as you please at home without disturbing the neighbors. So please explain your post...thanks.

The businesses at the squares pay for the entertainment. The entertainment attracts people to the squares who then spend money in the business. The businesses certainly do not want someone else transmitting the entertainment free to the internet. Hope this helps.

Do you really think less people would go to the squares and stay home and watch if there was sound with the video?

I hope it is royalty related

I hope the broadcast restrictions are royalty related. I manage the record company for an iconic, RRHoF band, so I am obviously sensitive to the subject. If someone is playing our music publicly, I think royalties should be paid.

The problem is that since music now seems to be a fungible product to everyone, the illegal use and distribution is rampant. Revenue streams for physical products and/or use for advertisements and commercials are not difficult to track. With all of the internet distribution possibilities, it gets much more difficult to track.

My personal opinion is that all of the cover bands playing our music in the squares should be paying royalties. A lot of people profit from it (the cover band, the bars on the squares, restaurants, etc.), but not the original artists/composers. The problem is that tracking and prosecuting would be a nightmare for everyone involved.

And don't get me started on the subject of people who buy our CD, take it home and rip it, and then return it claiming it was defective. That process costs me $5 and I am left with a CD that has no value.

All of this is stealing the intellectual property from the artist that created it. And no, we are not all zillionaires.

Thank you, nothings free.

kens613 04-23-2021 06:04 AM

I believe there is $120k built in to the Sumter Ctny tax roll for entertainment in the square!!

J1ceasar 04-23-2021 07:04 AM

County taxes pay for music at the squares not the businesses the entire residential base and business base of Sumter county pays for the music there is a large amount of money spent

Joe C. 04-23-2021 07:14 AM

Why?? The music is so damn LOUD that it doesn't need to be broadcasted.

FYI
Entertainment is mostly paid for with County tourism tax funds.

greg.turay 04-23-2021 10:05 AM

Putting audio on the streaming over internet would consume a lot more band width.

This is what TV is all about. I think you’re in the wrong place to live!

Well folks - Marathon Man and Neils are correct for the most part! The cost for music at the Brownwood and Lake Sumter Landing squares is offset by a $120,000 County Tourism Grant. No such grant money subsidizes the music at the Spanish Springs square since it is not in Sumter County. And I doubt that the average of approx $330/night pays for all of the costs associated with the entertainment at the 2 squares...so the additional money must come from the businesses.

The County Tourism Grant is funded from a 2% tax on Sumter County's rented rooms like hotel and motel facilities. The Tourism Grant is not paid for from Sumter County property taxes! Info re the Sumter County TOurism Grant can be found in the minutes of the Commissioner's meeting here Sumter County, FL - Official Website

If the sound came from the camera they use to look at the squares it would barely be audible and would sound like crap as they are so far away from the source PLUS, for the most part, the music quality itself (with a couple exceptions) ain't so great. Now if they chose to rebroadcast on WVLJ or whatever it is called with microphones at the venue rather than 200 yards away that's another story but frankly I'd rather find an XM or Spotify or one of the other streaming services or even a local radio station with real music for at home use.

mjpuleo 04-23-2021 12:17 PM

the musicians at the squares are wonderful and they don't make a whole lot of money for their performances, so why not let well enough alone; the squares are a privilege through amenities paid by the residents. leave it be already!!!

Live steaming with sound would be awesome - but they also need to move the camera at Lake Sumter - all you see is trees

Everyone please read the above. It not only answers the original question about sound on web cams, but it also addresses one of the myths that will not die.

On the webpage with the 3 squares webcams (www.stockers.ch/thevillages), there are 2 webcams for Lake Sumter. On one webcam you can see the whole Market Square without trees.
