tool for placing donuts on sprinkler heads

hello. we are in the village of bradford and looking for someone close who may have the tool needed to dig the hole for placing the donuts around the sprinkler heads. we are using the concrete ones, so i am not sure if there is a difference between the tool needed to do concrete versus plastic. thanks!

OrangeBlossomBaby 04-26-2021 11:53 AM

I had no idea you needed a special tool to dig a depression to fit a donut for the sprinkler system. Can't you just use a garden trowel?

JohnN 04-26-2021 12:20 PM

garden trowel or small pointed shovel

This is the tool you want.

Mortal1 04-26-2021 12:45 PM

Get the more expensive one otherwise you may break the cheap one as I did(5'3" 160lbs).

I suggest you buy your own from Lowes or Home Depot. I say that because you will need to use that same tool every few months to keep the rings clear of grass over growth. The tools are not very expensive and if you have your own you won't have to continuously trying to borrow one from someone in the future. I have to use ours every 3 - 4 months. And I believe all the ones they sell fit over the concrete rings and will cut the grass root runners as you turn the tool. Just a suggestion. Welcome to The Villages.

Dana1963 04-26-2021 01:01 PM

You will need a sprinkler donut trimmer various prices available Amazon Lowe’s https://www.lowes.com/pd/Orbit-Sprin...B&gclsrc=aw.ds

vintageogauge 04-26-2021 01:25 PM

Yep, buy one or I use an axe to cut around mine it leaves a nice edge for trimming later with just shears. If you are going to live here and do your own work you need your own tools not your neighbors.

Maybe you can be a good neighbor and shop for the best, most reliable tool and pass that information along to the OP.

I live in bradford you can borrow mine give me your address or phone #

tophcfa 04-26-2021 03:49 PM

Hmmmm, 3 or 4 times per year I remove every donut, clear the area all around where it sets, and then replace it making sure it centered, level and the correct height. I didn't realize there was a special tool, I just use my hands and then give them a good washing when finished.

You probably don't have St. Augustine grass, you have to cut the runners back.

We have Floratam grass, which is a hybrid type of St. Augustine. It was developed as a joint venture by University of Florida and Texas A&M, hence the name. I just pull the runners up by hand rather than cutting them back.

ohiosbestus 04-26-2021 06:21 PM

they sell them at Ace Hardware.

DARFAP 04-26-2021 07:50 PM

Go to ace Hardware and buy. They have very sturdy ones. Better than a trowel.

GrumpyOldMan 04-26-2021 09:05 PM

I don't understand, why would you put donuts in the yard, are you hoping to attract some hungry police officers?

(it's a joke :) )

Ddoozan 04-27-2021 05:07 AM

Ace Hardware in Wildwood sells a very good cutter for the doughnut rings. They are much stronger than what you will find and Lowe's or Home Depot. I use mine about every other month.

I respectfully disagree with your selection. The donut cutters available from Lowes or Home Depot are substandard in quality and durability. Neighbors have owned them and they struggled with cutting the grass roots (the cutting teeth are too short) and the strength of the welding. Failures occur when the welds break.

I purchased a heavy duty donut cutter from Florida Irrigation Service (FIS). They are located about 1 mile north of the intersection of CR42 and US441. Their donut cutter is a bit pricey, but worth the cost in reducing frustration.

Tmarkwald 04-27-2021 05:26 AM

OK, I learned something here. Of course, I do every day from this site!

Buy a donut cutter.

Quit using the sawzall to cut that damn grass.

Catalina36 04-27-2021 05:33 AM

Ace Hardware by Wedgewood lane sells the tool. Makes a perfectly round hole to fit the concrete donuts which Ace also sells.

RICH1 04-27-2021 05:50 AM

Looks like you have received plenty of suggestions! I purchased the expensive heavy duty doughnut tool. It will be around long after I am gone. Also you may be interested in making your own sprinkler doughnuts, if you need to replace or add any.. the molds are 20 bucks and a bag of Quickset is 5.00...with the temperature warming up get a good pair of speedos and some flip flops...

You can also use the tool from Lowe’s or Home Depot to trim around your underground downspout that have drains covers that are even with the lawn.

Me too but I guess some like a special tool for each job. Use a trowel, hands work well too. Much cheaper

mydavid 04-27-2021 06:35 AM

ACE Hardware $25

Syd2008 04-27-2021 06:35 AM

Ace hardware carries the tool. Get the heavy duty version. This weed grass is dense.

I bought a donut hole cutter from Lowe's and love it. It cost about $25.

Spend some more for the heavy duty one. I got mine at Ace Hardware. Glad I did.

llaran 04-27-2021 06:58 AM

we will sell you one for $10, ended up with 2 because couldn't remember where we put the 1st

mainelovr 04-27-2021 07:39 AM

We use Superior Services for our yard fertilizer, pesticide and sprinkler service. We just call them and let them know it needs to be done. They were here yesterday and did it as part of our service plan.

Ace Hardware! They have the heavy duty circle cutter. It fits the outside diameter of the donut rings, which is a requirement. This is not a once and done task. We have the St Augustine grass down here in Fenney, and I have to maintain my sprinkler heads often; maybe 3-4 times a year.

If you have the “lighter” and thinner grass (zoysia?) in Bradford, you might get away with the cheaper and more flimsy circle cutter Lowe’s and Home “Debit” sell.

The tool is like $10 or $15. Once you put in the doughnuts, grass tends to grow where you don't want it. You will find that you will need the tool on a regular basis.

I do not lend out tools. They never seem to come back as they were. Hum you reminded me. Once again I made the same mistake. I have to call my friend AGAIN so he returns the clamp an Allen keys I lent him 2-3 weeks ago
