What to do with hundreds of music CD's
Another round of de-clutter underway....
Are they worth anything to anybody? Goodwill? Trash? Other? |

Assuming you don't want to compile a complete list, can you give us an idea on both? |
I had about 800 CDs. I copied all of them to my computer into an uncompressed ".wav" format and a compressed ".mp3" format using Windows Media Player. It took a long time, but now I have full access to the music on a thumb drive, or I can create a perfect CD copy in about 5 minutes. I also have the files stored on the cloud. The original CDs are pretty much worthless.
|
Superglue and modern art come to mind.
|
Great music and memories! Store them on a USB drive and enjoy the time when music was music and not misogynist crud.
|
I was going to ask if you ripped the CDs already - glad you did! Charity begins at home ... would your local rec center appreciate them? If not, I'd contact goodwill or the sheriff's charity.
|
I still listen to CDs in my car. There's only one radio station I ever listen to when I'm driving around here, and half the time it plays music I don't want to hear.
|
Libraries used to have a great selection to borrow but now the shelves are nearly empty. I borrowed many to put into iTunes so I could listen on my phone. Not sure if there isn’t interest or they disappeared or became too damaged to play. Maybe the two libraries in The Villages would be interested. I’d appreciate a larger selection.
|
I use them as bird scarers ( bl**dy pigeons) on my vegetable plot.
String through hole, hang on canes, they spin in breeze reflecting the light, works a treat. Funny thing is, songbirds just ignore them. Maybe they like the old music as well!:) |
CDs
If you want something to do, put them on EBay. They already have the popular items as templates. Just look the item up to see what it is selling for. You might be surprised.
I did that about 9 months ago, along with cassette tapes, books, DVDs. Priced low to sell. Had to buy a digital scale and label printer. So far about 20% have been sold. Keeps me off the streets at night... |
I could use your CDs!
I’m in the process of ‘ripping CDs to a couple thumb drives for use in the car, and would Love to see what you have, and (possibly) use them. Please give me a call (602-418-8267). After I’m finished I would be happy to do whatever you’d like with them (donation to Goodwill, etc).
I found a few at the Pinellas Library, but was surprised at the overall lack of variety. Seems like donating to the library might be a very good option! Thanks! / Casey |
Salvation Army accepted a big box of CDs when we downsized last month.
|
I teach a Tap Dance Class and would be interested in suitable music.

There are flea market sellers who buy whole collections. I have many hard to find CD's that I have purchased from both Market of Marion and a fantastic seller at the Daytona Flea Market.

Wait, vinyls came back and are popular again. I'm holding on to my CD's.
|
If you have over 800, you most likely have some gems in there, especially if you have full catalogs of some artists. I always enjoy picking through collections but there are people out there who will buy the whole darn thing for a fair amount. I’m in a Facebook group called CD Hoarders and it’s amazing the amount of discs some people accrue. If you take clear photos of the spines, I could help tell you if it’s worth your time.

I use my phone in the car. I Heart Radio is free.

If the CD isn’t in excellent condition, don’t try to sell it. If you took it out of the jewel case and kept a dozen in your purse, like one girl I knew, forget it. If you sell it in bad condition, it will come back to bite you and ruin your rating, and you will lose money on the deal. Ideally, ship CDs in one of those cardboard CD mailers, even if they cost money. Many people ship them in padded envelopes, and often the jewel cases are cracked in the mail. At the least, tape the jewel case inside a couple pieces of corrugated cardboard before putting it in the padded envelope. Because of the size, it will add nothing to the cost, and it is a thoughtful thing to do. If you bought mostly CDs that were gigantic sellers, chances are they are now worth nothing because there are a hundred or more for sale. Listing CDs on Amazon takes time, effort, and know-how, but for many CDs, there are buyers. I have most of mine on my computers now, but the original CDs have cover art, liner notes, and sometimes extensive booklets about the band inside. That makes them worth having. I wonder what happens when there is a system that replaces the way we currently save them on computers, like MP3 or WAV. In ten years, will our songs disappear? Will they be unplayable. I’m one of those who plays CDs in the car, particularly books on CD. But many new cars no longer have CD players. I no longer have a computer with a CD read/write. I have to plug in an external one. What goes next? |
Donate them, someone’s trash could be someone’s treasure!
|
Guitar player here. I could use them for reference, depending on the genre. Let me know if interested.

They really aren't worth much. I traded many of mine in on the above site and got a little bit of money. I donated the rest to Goodwill. |
Not worth the trouble of selling unless it is a free site. Cannot give them away but there might be some people who will take them off your hands.
|
Donate to the Friends of the library
Powell road .... Great organization and they resell them and use the money for lots of good programs in the area |
Donate them to Bargains and Blessings on 301 in Wildwood

I'm sure the Baptist thrift store off Citizens blvd will take them. You can sell most anything on ebay. |
My brother-in-law was shocked at how much money he made selling all his old CD's on eBay.
|
I donated to Our Mother's Attic. They will sell. I am sure other resale shops might also.
|
I had a large collection, and donated most of them, but found a couple that were worth nearly $50 so sold those on ebay.
|
Pls try to keep them out of the trash/landfill. That said however, not sure who would want them, everything is digital, no need for physical media any longer.
|
Check eBay sold prices. I got $40-60 for many of mine. They have to be rare and in near mint condition, as someone else said. If they sold in the millions on initial release (I bought very few of those types), they’re worth nothing.

We are in the same sort of situation with our music collection. Tons of CDs and vintage vinyl LPs. Listing them all for sale will be an onerous task but we don't listen to them anymore and they are taking up valuable closet space. Add in the collection of framed movie posters that we have no place to hang and never will have a place to hang....
We've got enough stuff to stock a not so small store. |

If it's country music, rap, or Rachmaninov, I'm not interested. If it's AOR, funk, or Bach, I might be interested. |
CDs Taking Up Space
If you have decided to be rid of your CDs, I'd gladly take all of them, sight unseen. I understand the need to de-clutter. Mike @ 352-815-0140

My daughter has spoken for the cd's.
I mistakenly dismissed that any of the kids (in their 50's and 60's!!!) would be interested...totally surprised. Thanks to all who responded. |
