If you’re planning to build...

This is a heads up to anyone planning to build in The Villages. DO NOT let them sell you on Samsung appliances! Not only are they terrible but there are no repairmen in central FL. The closest is Gainesville and they only have 1 or 2 who can work on appliances. Every local company I talked to, including in Ocala, said they don’t touch them. Save yourself the headache and choose something else. Wish we had 🙁

We have Whirlpool. Samsung must be new. I found this blog from a large appliance repair in Massachussetts. It has figures on Appliance repair. I have never lived on the East Coast and I don't know this fellow. I didn't check the date either but here;

Are Samsung Appliances Reliable? (Reviews)

I am sorry you had trouble with your refrigerator.

The put in all whirlpool into our home including a washing and dryer. For some reason they put a cheap tiny fridge in. It looked funny in the spot, to short, to skinny. We just bought a full-size Samsung side by side fridge from Home Depot. Hopefully it will last.

Kenswing 05-14-2021 11:41 AM

We just recently built and they were pushing GE appliances. There is a severe appliance shortage right now. I'm guessing they're selling whatever they can get their hands on. We're still waiting on our wall oven/microwave and our range hood.

That makes sense. That probably explains it.

TV switched from whirlpool and GE to Samsung, on new builds. In less than 2 years the problems started. No one will touch them under warranty or out. Both of our fridges died (18 & 11yo Whirlpools one in TV, up north, in 2020) Inventory was limited, but most had Samsung in stock. Basically told if there was a problem with Samsung, you must have 3 failures before Samsung would replace, plus didn’t have anyone that would work on them.

Our utility companies have warranties to purchase, cheap, but would not write any Samsung. So we bought a Frigidaire up north, mainly it was the only one available in 2020, and not a Samsung.
In TV we went with whirlpool, same story, if you bought Samsung, no service

I think you're the one that's new lol. Samsung is a high-tech company that's been around a long time and has been making electronics highly competitive and high-quality items for a while. They are from South Korea.

Who knows why they're selling Samsung right now but it certainly isn't because it's cheap. They are very expensive and very high quality. Yes certainly hard to get fixed with the technicians but that's because they are such high quality and such high tech.

kansei 05-15-2021 05:33 AM

I've had my Samsung refrigerator serviced 5 times in the past year. Last Thursday, 4 repairmen installed new patrs. I'm hoping the problems are resolved. My advice- DON'T buy a Samsung refrigerator!

Zenmama18 05-15-2021 05:36 AM

We have no problems with Samsung in our home. The only issue is the dishwasher which seems “tinny” and is noisy. With open floor plan you hear it everywhere. When this one dies we’ll replace with a quieter model.

Petersweeney 05-15-2021 06:00 AM

They used to be ok till sales volume pushed production to China
I bought a new French door fridge that can’t make ice and a 65 inch flatscreen power board sizzled ( luckily I could fix that myself with a 75 dollar eBay replacement)

ithos 05-15-2021 06:19 AM

Had a Samsung washer for 5 years with no problems. I believe there was an earlier thread about trouble getting a Samsung refrigerator repaired.

I recommend an extended warranty. Bought one from Best Buy for 5 years.

Good advice about consulting local repair companies first. There are several recommended in previous threads.

I wonder if you have the option of not purchasing appliances. Anyone know? If so I would purchase one from Best Buy or other reputable chain with extended warranty options and possibly better prices.

J1ceasar 05-15-2021 06:37 AM

For $2,000 or less you can get four new appliances for your kitchen, for 1,000 or less you can get a washer and dryer also

An interesting article. Thanks for sharing.

We had an appliance repair man come for something awhile back (we don't have Samsung). The conversation got around to brands and he told us Samsung is junk. I wish we were back in the old days when stores were locally owned and you could buy products through them. Big Box stores seem worthless (even if their up front prices seem good)!!! We've been married 56 yrs this summer. Our 1st appliances lasted many years. When we bought our house 12 yrs ago, we went to Appliance Plus on 441/27 and got our washer and drier. Don't remember the brands, but they're basic---do the job and have worked fine. Did have to replace their knobs though. Our kitchen appliances are about 10 yrs old, I think. We replaced the builder-grade when friends of ours were remodeling their kitchen and wanted to get rid of their one-yr old, top of the line GE for stainless. We've only had to replace the microwave from that set. Used to be Whirlpool and one other brand (I don't recall the name) were great products. Hope we don't have to begin replacing any, anytime soon.

shirleyjerez 05-15-2021 07:08 AM

Just go on their web sight Samsung law suits and see how many they have. My Frig is 3 yrs old I have had to replace the ice maker 4 times the Frig motor 2 times. I have housevwaurantee so it hardly cost me but one of these days they will buy me a new Frig. R

jimkerr 05-15-2021 07:17 AM

As a former owner of a Samsung fridge, yes they are garbage. They’re made cheaply, they use cheap parts that break, the ice maker drain line would freeze up al the time, multiple ice maker issues and always having to use a hair dryer to thaw out the ice maker to get rid of the caked up ice that shouldn’t have been there.

Worse, is that Samsung refused to honor their own warranty. I’d say any other brand would be fine as long as it’s not Samsung.

Sorry you’re having problems.

villageuser 05-15-2021 07:26 AM

I purchased my Samsung appliances directly from Lowe’s, from whom I also purchased the extended warranty. When I had trouble with one of the appliances, they sent out a repair person who knew how to fix it. So, there is at least one group of people who know how to fix Samsung appliances in our area.

Pat2015 05-15-2021 07:28 AM

I just finished a new build in Dec and I have GE Profile appliances which I’m happy with. There is definitely a shortage of appliances and it was about a month or so before we received our stove. Life is good in Chitty Chatty.

DAVES 05-15-2021 07:40 AM

Reality, appliances they don't make em like they used to. Nor, would you buy what they used to make. Our previous home which we lived in for 40 years. The dryer was new 40 years ago and was still running when we sold the house. The washing machine a Maytag,
We got with the house and it was at least 5 years old, that too was still running when we sold the house. We threw them in at n/c with no guarantee when we sold the house.

My sister many years ago got a GE refrigerator with her home. It was the old type with a motor on top. Date code on the motor said 1936. Has not come up, but as of a year or so ago, it was still running. Used for soda and beer in their basement, den?

Aside-we have all Whirlpool appliances with our purchased new Villages home. One repair on the refrigerator it was leaking water on the floor. A defect in design that the company is aware of, it was repaired at n/c under warranty. We also had the ice maker fail. We paid to have that done. Seems due to issues the company has gone back to using the old part and calling it new improved.

We demand all the gadgets, includes your car etc. They don't make things like they used to nor would you buy them.

I agree a lot of neighbors have had trouble with their Samsung appliances. Personally mine haven’t broken down but the shelves and drawers in the freezer constantly fall off the tracks. Samsung suggested we purchase new drawers and shelves at our expense to see it that solved the problem. At first breakdown we will replace with different brand. I also told Samsung that although I own 3 of their TVs and a tablet they have lost all future business.

Yes, we had a terrible time with Samsung appliances too. But in the Premier homes
They put more expensive appliances in them. The builders must get a very good rate on Samsung, but they must be seconds. We had 2 Samsung’s replaced in 1 yr. Warranty was only good for a yr. Couldn’t believe warranty only had one yr. warranty. But most appliances only have one yr. warranty nothing on faulty work from factory like some do!

SusanStCatherine 05-15-2021 09:40 AM

We were told the new builds were switching from Samsung to GE specifically because of poor Samsung quality and service. During our recent design, we were encouraged to order our own appliances because of supply problems holding up closings.

Unfortunately, all appliances are made to last a maximum of 7 years. Bc of experiencing this on an LG refrigerator (4 yrs), and several repair persons stating this is done by manufacturers for their bottom line, I am buying German made appliances (Miele) which claim 20 years on their washers/dryers. I’m willing to pay more for the convenience of reliability. I’ll buy American again if the companies quit substituting a mismatch of inferior parts from the cheapest bidder.

New builds now have GE Appliances

We just finished our design in March. The appliances are now GE, if they can get them. We did the refrigerator and double oven through the build (both GE), but had to order our cooktop, washer, dryer and lanai fridge on our own.

Nothing local had what we wanted, so I ordered from our go to appliance store in Illinois, Abt. Got a great deal and exactly what I wanted. No one is building like crazy up here! Only problem is I'll have to find a local installer for them.

Abt is also on online retailer. So if you're in the market for appliances (and a lot of high end brands, too)...try, Abt.

kp11364 05-15-2021 10:24 AM

I recently had my 12-yo Whirlpool washer start to go south. Called appliance repair and the cost to fix was as high as a new washer. Supply was very limited because of the pandemic so I got a commercial Maytag. The installer was talking to me about brands and Samsung came up - he said that their appliances are garbage - only things to buy from Samsung are phones and TV's... :ohdear:

I have the original GE appliances in my 18 year old home and still in good working order. I am going to wait until they die before I get new ones. I have heard a lot of complaints about many of the brands out there for new appliances.

Holpat39 05-15-2021 12:53 PM

DeSantis Air Conditioning and Appliance Repair services Samsung or at least they did several months ago. I had my 2017 Samsung serviced many times for a total out of pocket of over 1,200. Always with the ice maker in the refrigerator section. Samsung supposedly rebuilt the compartment which was used in my last repair but it is still freezing up. DeSantis said not to throw any more money into the appliance as it would only be the same thing. Samsung did refund me 1,200 for all the repairs but it took 6 months of back and forth and proof of the repairs. Paid over 2,700 for the refrigerator and it still drips water from the dispenser in the door and the ice maker is still freezing up. Have to use a hair dryer at least once a month to defrost all the frost and ice in the compartment. Looking to buy a new refrigerator. What a waste of money and what a disappointment. They make a great television but am leery of their appliances. Will go back to GE next time.

I had the same issue with a Whirlpool fridge up north a few years ago. Water leaked on the floor and damaged the laminate flooring that the previous owner had installed in the kitchen. Technician says, "Oh, yeah, known issue, I fix several of these a week."

I think most appliances are junk nowadays. I want to upgrade mine and the thought of it terrifies me. Ours are very basic and noisy but they work! (I did upgrade our washer and dryer to front-loading LG units with pedestals and love them. Fingers crossed nothing happens to change that!)

Northerner52 05-15-2021 02:57 PM

I just finished design and the one option was GE Profile or credit to get your own.

Live in Monarch Grove and have all Samsung appliances. Love them. We run the dishwasher at night when we are going to bed and once asleep, we hear nothing.

We had a lot of trouble with our Samsung refrigerator. Especially the ice maker. We switched to a Whirlpool fridge 2 years ago and so far no problems.

Seven years now in our Designer home we had built. During 'design' we opted out of the standard GE appliances and got a credit. Bought all our appliances at Home Depot. They had a great sale then (bundle) and we got excellent Samsungs for just over $600 more with the TV Credit. A very nice large Samsung refigerator, stove, microwave, washer, dryer. ZERO issues up to now, almosy 8 years, knock wood. We have neighbors who had to replace their GE stuff already, or many problems. so good news here.
