Found a bag of money. What would you do?
 

Trying to get a consensus. If you found a paper bag with money in it and it had no identification markings. Just a plain paper bag. What would you do?

It depends on where I found it. If I found it in a store, I'd bring it to the courtesy desk with my name and phone number. They'd put it aside for 30 days and if not claimed, it'd go to me.

If I found it on the street/sidewalk/parking lot I might hang around for a half hour and if no one comes by looking for their lost bag of money, I'd take it home and set it aside for 30 days. If I don't read anything in the paper, or here, or anywhere else about someone losing their bag of money, it'd be mine to keep.

If I found it outside a bank and the alarms are going off and the police are approaching, I'd wave my hands up in the air and tell them that I found the loot, right here.

I did find a bag of money last week as a matter of f_ct. Just waiting for someone to claim it.

I would turn it in to the sheriff's office.

I guess it depends on how much. Are you going to dinner, buying a new car or buying a new house, lol. As already stated, hold it to see if anyone comes looking and can tell you how much there is.

Keep it in my house till someome forgets about it. Then look if it consecutive serial numbers...if not, spend it here and there..not all at once.

I'd be very cautious as it may have been dropped during a drug deal or the like and bad guys may be looking for it, especially if it was loaded with rolls of hundreds.

Years ago I was at the Ft. Lauderdale airport and a young hispanic man was at the first class counter purchasing a ticket using a roll of hundreds he had pulled out of a brown paper bag.

They used to open up banks in Miami for men bringing in grocery bags full of cash. (cringe)

Tell my hubby, he can get that BBQ he had his eyes on after all ?

I have two stories about found money.

Guy a know used to do windows for Safelite. Got a call for a rental return side window as EWR. The lot guy was often bored and would help out, taking off door panels and whatnot.

Apparently when someone tried to put the window down the window shattered.

Turned out the car was packed with money. Every possible void in the vehicle had money stuffed in it.

He immediately called the police.

The second story, my Sister in law was driving in her town and saw money on the side of the road. She stopped, picked up a $100 bill. She looked further down the road and saw more bills laying there. She collected all of it, about $600. She called the local police they said no reports about stolen or lost money or whatever, told her to hang on to it for 30 days and after that do whatever she wants with it, they'd be in touch if something came up. Nothing did and she bought a new TV.

If I were to turn it in to ANYONE it would be the Police Dept. Giving it to the customer service clerk or even the manager in a store might not be a wise idea if you had any thought of getting it if it went unclaimed in 30 days. No, I don't have faith in mankind. "In G-d I (We) trust, everyone else pays cash." Anyone from NY/NJ/CT remember listening to Jean Shepherd on WOR 710 NYC radio in the 60's and 70's & 80's ?

"Cash only. Credit only given if customers are over 80, and accompanied by both parents!"

Look over both shoulders to see if anyone saw me find it and also look for cameras and drones then run like hell! Don’t want to be on Candid Camera version 2021

Not hold it in your house until someone claims it. And someone mentioned turning it into a store and if not claimed in 30 days its theirs. Noooooo. I dont know where they would get that from. Common sense if there is alot of money in it, the store turns it over to the sheriffs office. They dont hold it in their little lost n found box!
When you turn it into the sheriffs office, after 60 days if not claimed, you may claim it. Some police depts hold it longer or shorter time. Of course, before somebody pipes up.......if its something illegal.......noooooo....you cant have it!

I'm way too distrustful of anybody doing the right thing these days. I'd tell the sheriff office/store near where it was found about it, leave my phone number, then only hand it over to someone who claimed it and knew exactly how much money was in the bag.

I would make a report to the sheriffs office with all my information and wait to see if someone claims it by knowing what it was carried in and the amount that was in it and wait a year. If no one claimed it by then I would guess they never would. Once I found a rather large diamond ring in the parking lot of a golf course back home. I informed the pro shop and the guy told me to leave it with him. I said no and gave him my name and phone number so the owner could call and describe it, that way I could be sure of it’s safety. About a week later a woman called and described the ring. She was so happy! It was an anniversary present from her husband who had saved and saved to buy it for her.

I Would Say WHAT MONEY.

To each his own, it's kind of like asking six priests for an opinion on something in the Bible, you will get seven opinions. But just to answer you with a couple of quick stories I would have to say at 99.99% of the people here would be truthful and honest and turn the money in whether to a store or a bank or the police. Okay here goes first story someone I know when they were very young back in the seventies for buying speakers for the stereo system. They went into an independent store and purchased two speakers, they received two cartons and brought them home, and then found that they were two speakers in each box. The speakers were not returned. I myself ordered several chairs from a mail order company a few years ago, same thing happened two chairs per box, received two boxes. It took 2 hours of convincing the person on the phone to issue a pick up for one of the cartons. Recently had an internet order for a baby stroller and a chain store, and I had to go there to pick it up as they don't deliver something like that. One person checked me in outside the store, another person brought it out to me and didn't ask for my identification. So yesterday I just got in the mail that my order was canceled as I did not pick it up and they are not charging my card. So I'll ask you should I spend an hour of my time on a $20 charge that they did not charge me for to try to convince them to charge me? Small things like this happen all the time in the store two for one deals get on challenged that you still rang up the wrong price even though they have computers, waitresses forget to charge you for that orange juice and then get yelled at later on. But your story is asking about a bag of money and they are not enough real facts to decide what to do. If a $20 bill is on the sidewalk you pick it up and you don't wait around to decide to ask if somebody lost a 20. But golfer's here all the time lose the club or forget where they put the last club and they go to have a drink. I was just sitting at the first pub with three golfers next to me eating lunch and a nice lady brought in a club saying well why are you gentlemen forgetting about this beautiful club and returned it to him, of course it was his favorite club and this is just one of the nice things about living down here

Turn it in to the Police Dept. It could be a drug dealer, or it could be a senior who doesn’t trust banks. Wait 30 days and know you did the right thing.

Probably call 911 so that there was a record of my finding it and that maybe someone who had just committed a crime was in the vicinity and I would have to be wary about meeting this person.

Largest bill I have found was a $5 in a Villages' parking lot. Years ago. No one was nearby.

For those of you keeping the money, federal tax law dictates that it is taxable income to you. So I'm sure you're going to do the right thing and claim it on your income tax return as well, Right?

A few days ago a young waitress from Johnny Rockets restaurant called the police because someone stole about $500.00 from her apron when she was in the restroom. You may want to contact either the restaurant or the Sumter County Police Department.

My son-in-law found $70,000 in cash in a bank money bag. He contemplated keeping it, but in the end, did the right thing and called the bank. They gave him a $1,000 reward.

If in found it in a business or similar place I'd turn it in. If I'm out walking and it's on a trail or sidewalk I deposit it.

If you found a gold doubloon would you look for the Spaniard who lost it or would you go in search of the whole treasure chest?

Watch who you give the money to. You might turn it over to a police officer and then it is up to them to make sure that the money is held until somebody would claim it. I found a $20 bill in a restaurant once while on vacation. I went to the front desk and said I found some money and if somebody says they lost it here is there phone number. Never told them the amount because they could call and get the $20 how would I know. If somebody came in and said they lost money I asked them to ask the person how much? If they said $20 then I told them to give them my number and call me and I would return it.
