Your Favorite Non-Profit

After a recent discussion, I became curious about donations to non-profits. Which one would you donate a chunk of money to? Family and friends do not count.

RICH1 06-07-2021 07:50 PM

St Jude's is one of my favorites!

I knew a fella who donated 1.3 million to the Moose Club in PA... a year later he stopped in for a beer and they didn't even know who he was .,.

Cancer Research of any kind. Sadly research numbers will be skewed due to many had a Covid death, instead of stage 4 metastasized to multiple organs. Hopefully research will have a better chance of realigning numbers

Some Cancer type charities are not really a charity they take most of the money they collect for expenses.

A friend of mine has his own non-profit called the Cohort of Disembodied Artists. COHORT OF DISEMBODIED ARTISTS – SUPPORTING ARTISTS WHO USE ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGIES It supports people who use assistive technologies to make art. He is one of those people. He has ALS, and has had no voluntary muscle function for years. He lives at home with 24/7 professional nursing staff, and communicates via a special technology called an eyewriter that interacts with a computer suspended from the ceiling so he can see it while being 100% bedridden.

He makes most of his art exclusively via the computer and he's amazingly gifted. I met him and his girlfriend (now his wife) in my college dorm my second year at Emerson. He wasn't diagnosed until a decade or so after that.

If I could afford to buy a dozen of his art pieces, I would. As it is, I did a fundraiser via Facebook last year and raised around $1500 total.

Local animal rescues. These organizations survive on the generous support of the communities they are in.

Rotary is a great organization that provides local and international support to charities. Most of the work and money is directed through local clubs internationally. The Villages Rotary Noon. Does many service projects fir area schools , camps, food banks etc. also supports projects in other projects in foreign countries through direct support and global grant. Currently a global grant is being used to build a rehab facility in Eustis. Money has come from all over the world.

As you want a serious answer I will give you one I would like to start a local charity that helps out those in the Tri-County area that we live in that delivers more amounts of money for things that matter to people that have very little. Just last week I donated a baby stroller to her grandmother living by herself on social security you had no extra money. This week I am seeking donations for a special needs child for a large three-wheel bicycle. The problem with most charities here. Is there a concerned with the very big problems like hunger and living conditions which is all fine and good but there are a lot of people living day by day that just would like to be able to buy a Christmas gift at the end of the year for their kids or some new toothbrushes or a new shirt or sneakers for the kids to go to school

Not charities, but research, right now spending time with organization for men’s breast cancer. Drugs used today are the same as for females, which is hormone based. Research to find treatment that works mainly for male breast cancer, awareness, mammograms, post care, and rehab. 90% dollars is patient based.

I use my time, talent and treasure to assist "Forward Paths Foundation" in Leesburg. It is an organization that helps foster children who have turned 18 and aged out of Foster Care. Often they are just put on the streets. We assist with shelter and food, but more importantly teach them real world skills such as: how to fill out an application, how to open and balance a checkbook, etc. IF you would like to donate or volunteer, check their webpage: forwardpaths.org

Donation

I would donate to Best Friends Animal Society, the worlds largest. They took in Michael Vic’s pit bulls and rehabilitated them and placed them in homes. They are going to make the United States totally no -kill by 2025.

I agree. I would add in such non profits as Community Helping Animals in Need. They help people in our local area who may need surgery, food, medicine, etc. for those who have pets, but have been put under some financial strain. They also help with emergency surgeries for animals hit by cars. Helping many of these people help them keep their pet at home versus putting them out in the street as strays. Our animal shelters are overwhelmed. I like to keep my money local and know that the officers (all volunteers), do not take any pay. All money goes to treatment and an occasional small amount for office expenses.

Salvation Army has the most money going to those in need, $0.94 of every dollar goes to the needy. The worse is GOODWILL, only $0.06 goes to those in need and ASPCA only $0.06 goes to the animals.
St Jude is a good one although I have no idea how much goes to help those in need, but is a great charity

Charity Navigator is a great resource to learn about any not-for-profit charity and how their money is spent.

wsachs 06-08-2021 06:43 AM

First thing I do when donating to a charity is to check them out. This is a good source. 3 Websites To Check To Be Informed Before Giving To Charity

Salvation Army. This non-profit has the lowest % of your donation being spent on the administration of their organization. Their contributions to humanity are not only life saving in many instances but they also provide a spiritual uplift. A great organization.

I donate to them too. Not only do they rehabilitate and place, if any animal is unable to be rehabilitated ( example, two of Vic's dogs), they have a home at Best Friends forever.

I would love to go visit/volunteer.

If you look for a charity that uses .85 of every dollar for it's primary work you won't find many including some big names good luck

BettyInFL 06-08-2021 07:06 AM

Salvation Army #1 - Back in the early 70's, when I was still a kid, away from home and in dire need of money, they gave me $99. It was enough to get me back on my feet. They get a donation every year from me.

Blue Heeler rescue in Texas

Glenn Becks Mercury One
Veteran charities

Animal shelters and Smile Train - they repair cleft palates in children in poor countries.

Sadly non profits spend too much money on overhead benefits travel and so little goes directly to the purpose- folks like United way Susan g Komen ACS - Am Csn society or habitat for humanity have some or the best benefits they can use your money on. One of the few - very few/ Ronald McDonald House uses 95% for families treatment housing etc
