Rain Gutters on Lanai?

During a hard rain (like we had yesterday), the rain comes off the lanai roof and I end up with water on the floor of the lanai by the screen because the water doesn't come straight down off the roof. It is flung somewhat towards the screen and comes thru the screen. Do those of you that have rain gutters on the lanai roof still end up with water on the lanai floor?

I am only interested on putting the rain gutters on the lanai (less than 40 feet total). Does anyone have recommendations for installers if I decide it may help? We are new to the Villages and don't have much experience dealing with contractors here.

Road-Runner 06-14-2021 11:29 AM

We put gutters all the way around and the lanai stays much drier now. A lot of the wetness previously was where the runoff splashed up from the ground which is totally gone with gutters.

We had our gutters installed by Stipes five years ago and they did an excellent job.

We used Hill's for our gutters. Keep in mind that even with gutters, and depending on the winds during a rainstorm, your lanai will flood

raynan 06-14-2021 01:54 PM

We used M & M a few years ago to install gutters and it was only $400 for whole house.
Definitely worth it.

Rain gutters-just a reminder, you need to have a place to put the water that goes down the downspout. Water through the screen, it may have to do with wind direction.
A hurricane, at times it is like being under a waterfall.

Gutters definitely help. BUT depending on which way the wind blows during a rainstorm/hurricane, the lanai still gets water. Not much you can do about that, other than installing windows.

RICH1 06-15-2021 05:08 AM

Hills is hands down the Best ! They are fair and will not gouge you , like the other gutter companies. They did me right! You also need to have them look at why you are getting water in your Lanai.. I just reread your Post, I made the mistake of assuming you had windows..LOL

The OP certainly did ask about that...don't be so snippy.

Gutters will help, but your lanai is still going to get wet depending on which direction the wind/rain is coming from. We had Stipes install our gutters, and they did a great job at a fair price. The gutters do lessen the amount of water that comes into the lanai, but will not eliminate it completely.

A concern for you may be that you are seeking a pretty small job. Contractors are all very busy now, and it may be tough to find one willing to take a small job. Perhaps they could squeeze you in at the end of a day. Also, don't put much stock in what someone says they paid more than a year ago. Materials costs have gone up, and what you will pay today will be much different.

It’s exactly what the OP was asking about.

I used Hill’s for gutters, and am very happy with the job.

Depending on wind direction, water is always going to get on the lanai.

If the wind is blowing, it will blow the rain directly into the Lanai screen and your floor will get wet. Gutters (which we have) will not help. We put electric shades on all sides so when we're expecting heavy rain, we lower them and the Lanai floor stays dry.

CDerington 06-15-2021 06:21 AM

We have the same problem and have thought about adding gutters but in the mean time we put in white marble rocks and it has made an improvement. It has been a year with the rocks and it has helped.

Yes, they did. Read the last paragraph. Maybe you should take your own advice. ;)

Obrienx4 06-15-2021 06:53 AM

I suggest you get gutters all the way around.. as you can see over the last couple of days it’s a good idea to manage the rain on your property. We used Seamless Gutters and he was great!!!

We have a large Lanai and used to have the same water problem as you are experiencing. We had Watkins Gutters (watkinsgutters.com) install gutters with their leaf-guard accessory and... problem over.

These folks are the BEST gutter vendor in this entire area (and 5-star rated). Hard working, honest, friendly, and VERY competitive local family owned business. I can't recommend them enough.

Plain gutters alone may not work as without the leaf-guards the gutters may plug up quickly (at least ours did) and then overflow. You have to make sure the gutters maintain their water discharge ability, or you're right back where you started from.

Watkins was 1/6th as expensive as the highest other quote I received, and the Watkins quality was 5 times better than any gutter vendor we have ever used.
:-)

I couldn’t understand why no gutters were on my house when we moved in three years ago. One of the first things was called Stipes 352-390-7744 and had gutters installed all around including the lanai.

Hendrick22 06-15-2021 07:23 AM

This is my 2nd attempt to post this.
8 yrs ago I had awnings installed around my lanai. That stopped the water coming in, no matter what direction the wind is blowing! And they look nicer then gutters

Topspinmo 06-15-2021 07:24 AM

If you have valley that directs water down to you’re lanai usually splash guard installed due to flood of water directed down the valley which may over flow the gutters. Even long gutters can be flooded due to not enough slope to drain water quick enough. Basically in torrential downpour things are going to get wet.

Added cost building house.

merrymini 06-15-2021 07:34 AM

Wind allows the rain into the lanai no matter what. I only put gutters in the front because of staining on the driveway. Used M&M and they did a nice job. Awnings make the lanai dark and I would rather have the light. I like the outside, open lanai, and have plantings all the way around the house, so water off the roof is good for them. I clean up the lanai periodically, no problem and I do not use rocks. I enjoy all the birds and wildlife around the house because of my natural plantings and soil.

Yes if the wind is blowing toward the lanai you may still get some water on the lanai. My suggestion is gutters over lanai, also over the front door entrance and the garage door. That will keep you and visitors from getting soaked if entering or exiting during a rain. Other reasons are the rain running off the roof will wear away and stain the concrete driveway and walkway.

Billy1 06-15-2021 07:42 AM

Stipes is very good. Save time and money, gutter your entire house if not already done. Guttering around the Lanai made a big difference for us.

Larchap49 06-15-2021 07:49 AM

One more suggestion, if you decide on gutters spend a little extra and get 6" gutters not the standard 5". The 5 " will over flow in the heavy storms

davem4616 06-15-2021 07:53 AM

it is the wind that is the issue....the gutters will eliminate any 'splash' that may occur if the rain is falling straight down (rarely)

if you don't have any furniture out there that would be damaged by water...or you don't really use it, why bother

billethkid 06-15-2021 07:59 AM

Water also follows the angles of the screen supports not into the gutter........it is outdoors....it's gonna get wet!!

Hendrick22 06-15-2021 07:59 AM

I’ve never thought of the awnings making my lanai dark.
I think of them as shading the lanai, and with this summer heat & sun..shading is what you might be looking for.
Either way, they have served all their purposes.

Thank you....I don't think this person can read 🤷*♀️

Edzo49 06-15-2021 08:15 AM

Motorized shades and 6” gutters will take care of 95% of rain issues but when it rains sideways there will be some moisture on lanai floor.

Never understood why the builders don’t put gutters on houses they build. I never heard of building a home & don’t have gutters. Is it because all homes in Florida are built on cement slabs?

The problem with Hill, is they use cheap Chinese fasteners. 5 years in , they began to rust, and Hill told me I needed to do the maintenance on the screws. Obviously, the man is totally clueless. I replaced all the screws with stainless steel.

Hill's did ours in 2014. Not one issue since.

I echo comment #3. We used Stipes and would use them again. Very professional, very reasonable, and we got four estimates before choosing. We also had a few friends/neighbors recommend Stipes.

If the rain is blowing in from the a direction towards you lanai screen, you will get water going through the screen. If the rain comes from the other side, you should not get blow through and gutters will help direct the runoff away from the house.

Purchased house last year and had gutters all around. Used Hills

Have scheduled for August

Stipes will be putting up gutters on my lanai in August. They come highly recommended. Very reasonable.

Actually it is because there is no need for them since no basements, the sand soaks up water fast and the yards are sloped.

You're right on the money with that statement.
I am a handyman and do a lot of work in The Villages and surrounding areas

The price on materials has more than doubled since this COVID bs started....and many times you can't find what you need.
