Roofers
Some of my neighbors have replaced their roofs. My untrained eye tells me there maybe damage on my roof too. Someone gave me Five Star roofing and construction. Anyone have their roof done with them? Or which roofing company could be trusted?
|
They may be called Five Star Roofing, but they only got 1 star on BBB and 3.5 stars on Yelp. I would suggest you read the reviews and complaints on BBB.org.
McGinnis is a good roofer. |

That’s how it starts.

Yep, so far Batterbee got good reviews on BBB too. I always do my research, but my confession: I start with TOTV and the regular posters first. It has paid off several times before. And I am grateful.

Pay to Play
Never trust pay to play sites like bbb & Yelp. Much better to use totv , nextdoor or Google reviews.

We used Batterbee. They were good to work with.
They surveyed the roof and showed us the damage on a video. They explained that in their view it had largely been storm damage but that would be for an insurance assessor to determine if we wanted to make a claim. They offered to take over such a claim but being Brits we didn’t feel comfortable with that. The price they quoted for a like for like replacement was within a few dollars of what the insurers assessed. So they weren’t trying to rip us off. We decided to go for one of their upgraded roofs. Not sure if insurance companies are being as generous now, as they had a lot of similar claims after Irma. Hope that helps. |
Call The Villages warranty Dept and find who installed your roof. A lot of the roofers Operating in The Villages are door to door to door solicitors!

Try OcalaRoofing great old company with great prices

McHale did mine. My neighbor was not happy with Five Star because they didn't respond when he had problems. Better to go with a local company, not a storm chaser.

McHale in Fruitland Park. Highly experienced, and their reputation is such that they do almost no advertising.

Just had Batterbee do our new roof. They did a great job. I would highly recommend them. Very professional people to work with.
|
Batterbee. Great job and an excellent product!

There are a few that I truly local long-term companies. We have used McHale as have many others. There are two or three others that you will find highly recommended as well. Our governor has just signed a bill that will stop all of the so-called hail damage slash insurance covered new roofs. Basically if you're not getting rain in your house, it's not damaged as much as you think and most groups are actually good for 20 to 25 to 30 years even in Florida. As others have said someone will have to go up on the roof and see if there's anything left of the asphalt shingles and how many years you have left. That's not to say that occasionally due to wind or hell a few shingles may need replacing but certainly I would prefer a $300 fix than going through doing the new roof and paying a huge deductible . At the end of the day I prefer to think of myself as being ethical and that not - gee wizh- I screwed over the insurance company.

Watch out for scams
If someone is knocking at your door, slam it in their face. Some of their tactics are a salesman (inspector) stops by and notes damage. Then a company person comes to inspect the roof and says damage, then the 3rd person comes and writes an estimate. If you sign, your on the hook with them if you don't get out under the 14 day Fl law. You will owe them and you may get a crappy job. Doesn't matter to them, you signed.
Call The Villages Construction/Home Warranty @ 352-753-6222. Their familiar with locals and can give you a referral and/or the roofer that put your original on. Remember not to talk to anyone who happens to knock at your door. Quote:

I have read very carefully every reply and I am following up. There are past threads I have also read.
TOTV posters, I’d like to say how wonderful your suggestions are. I so miss my parents who lived here and could have guided me before they passed away, but I feel very lucky to have your goodwill and guidance. |

Yes, I had 5 Star replace my roof and would highly recommend them to everyone, did a fantastic job and very professional!!
|
Up north my bil owned the largest and most successful roofing company in the city. He used to tell stories. My hair still stands up when I think of some of them.
|
I've watched McGinnis tear off and install a new roof in five hours. For that reason alone, I chose a different roofer. How good can the installation be in such a quick time?
|
What was your total cost for the Hawthorn model? Who did it? Thanks.
