Sounds of Silence cover

This is not new, it was recorded in 1963 by Simon and Garfunkel ( I am sure most if not everyone has heard the original). Simon summed up the song's lyrics as an ode about people not being able to communicate with each other and the growing divide that was resulting.

It seems to resonate with me today.

The original was a very lovely melodic almost melancholy performance, but if you listen closely to the words, they express anger and frustration.

This cover from 2016 is a reimagining of the original. A very emotional and disturbing expression of that anger and frustration. The lead singer has an amazing voice and his control is just stunning.

While Disturbed is a Metal band, I believe this performance goes beyond genre and is a masterpiece. Simon seems to have agreed since he posted this to his own social media, in 2016, when it came out and praised the interpretation.

This is posted as an expression of my own frustration and anger. It so accurately represents my own feeling at the lack of our ability to communicate with each other.

This is absolutely NOT a political statement/post. This is a post about the state of our society. Our obsession with social media where people talk without saying anything, read without understanding anything. And our bowing down to (obsession with) the "neon god we made" - technology/social media.

Warning, this is a very powerful and emotional performance, it may not be suitable for everyone.

Best version out there Love Disturbs rendition of this classic

It's an amazing song, and Disturbed does an amazing job of it. You can add some amazing movement by watching Nyle Marco (who is completely deaf) and Peta Murgatroyd doing freestyle dance to the song on Dancing With the Stars.

Awesome version by Disturbed. “Stricken “ also by Disturbed is excellent. Another couple good remakes are “Turn the page” by Metallica and “Bad Company “ by Five Finger Death Punch. Almost forgot “Whiskey in the Jar “by Metallica

I remember the original, but Disturbed interpretation of the song was hauntingly wonderful.

I agree. Great rendition. Lead singer comes from an orthodox jewish family. His father wanted him to be a cantor. Ha!!

Must agree. When visiting office, airport, restaurant it’s mind boggling how many people are looking down at their cell phones. Polite conversation and greetings have taken a backseat for some but not all.

here's a live version they did on the Conan show. Also very powerful.

Thank you!

I have mixed feelings about the live version. It is good, but I think the studio version with that video is more powerful. The video, unlike so many music videos, makes it even more powerful.

The live version has the advantage of being live and having real blemishes - which I also enjoy!

"Blew my socks off," an interesting OLD expression. It comes from PORNO MOVIES.
It was hard to find male actors. If he took his socks off it was a NEW crossing the line.

While we tend not to be aware of it. How things touch you depends on your state of mind, what is going on in your life when you hear it, see it, read it etc.

I regularly put notes in books I OWN and read. It is interesting to read what I thought years ago compared to today. Frankly anyone to get my books will wonder.

I absolutely love this cover of “Sounds of Silence”. One of the best covers I have ever heard. So powerful it brings back hearing the original recording for the first times and then it goes beyond. Chills!

“Zombie “ covered by BAD WOLVES is so very good! Delores O’Reirdan was going to go back into the studio to re-record this with BAD WOLVES, but she died before it could happen. Again, another song that transcends time.

zuidemab 07-01-2021 09:07 AM

And 1 more version

The Pentatonics do a version more filled with angst than anger. Not choosing just offering another rendition. All are powerful.

rileygirl 07-01-2021 09:18 AM

The message of the song is as true today as it was then. I was not familiar with Disturbed, but the performance was very moving. Thanks for sharing.

Yes, Pentatonics is a fantastic group and their cover is excellent as well.

And I agree, theirs give me more a feeling of desperation or angst.

I am happily surprised to see many are.

I fully agree. I remember S&G was very popular when released. I liked it then; however I really like Disturbed cover much better. His voice does a much better job to convey the emotion of the song. Not often do I hear that much power from someone's voice.

The live version done on Conan is what caused Paul Simon to reach out to the band, who were blown away by his words.

Simon was around 20 years old, give or take a year or so in either direction, when he wrote this. Just a timeless classic.

I have seen interviews of David (lead singer) when asked about Simons response, and it is obvious he was very moved and humble. Simon was one of this countries great song writers, and to have him appreciate a cover they did was a very special moment.

Inspiration for “Sounds of Silence”

I heard on a radio show that the lyrics were inspired by Garfunkel’s friend in college, who was losing his sight.
Reference: Travel Industry Today:
“ In his memoir, “Hello Darkness, My Old Friend: How Daring Dreams and Unyielding Friendship Turned One Man’s Blindness into an Extraordinary Vision for Life,” Garfunkel’s best friend Sanford “Sandy” Greenberg explained how he suddenly lost his sight in college and how he overcame the tragedy and subsequently went on to great success in life due in large part to the support of his pal, Garfunkel.
Art – who in a show of empathy called himself “Darkness” – would talk about the situation with his musical partner, Paul Simon, who went on to write the song.”

Or, there may be other explanation….
