Golf Cart Rules of the Road

I believe (someone correct me if I'm wrong) that the folks who live in Spruce Creek are allowed to cross 441 in their carts (due to a special exception). But what about crossing from the Walmart/Sonic side over to the McDonald's/CVS/strip mall side? I didn't think that was legal but I saw someone do it this afternoon (and I did not see a plate on the back of the cart so it did not appear to be street legal).

Seeing that cart surrounded by all those cars -- that is a busy intersection -- gave me the creeps.

I do not understand. Is it legal? Why does it matter? IT IS CLEARLY NOT VERY BRIGHT.

OrangeBlossomBaby 07-14-2021 05:23 PM

No, it's still not legal to cross where Walmart faces McDonald's. People do it anyway.

Is walking across any "more bright?" That's legal. It all comes down to doing whatever one does safely and OF COURSE legally.

Had they been street legal would they have looked less creepy? :D When our "cart" was street legal (we had it "decommissioned" due to absurd insurance costs) we regularly crossed 441. It's no less safe or any more scary then taking a bike across or a motorcycle or walking. Like anything else if one isn't careful no matter what they drive it can go bad.

I wonder if people who do it think it is legal or if they just don't care that it is not ...

But your cart is (was?) an Atomic, right? That type of cart gives one a lot more protection. This was a run-of-the-mill OPEN cart with a large dog sprawled across the front seat. If it got hit they would have both been squished or gone flying.

I'm always amazed at how many people are willing to break the law. Maybe he REALLY need McDonald's!

From over at Lowe’s/Walmart there is a set of lights that you are suppose to be able to cross but I don’t know which ones so I wouldn’t dare cross. There are enough places to get to safely without taking a risk.

4pocketz 07-15-2021 04:42 AM

Golf carts have TOO much leeway and NEED to be under more scrutiny by law enforcement and DMV there is too much abuse of the laws by their owners! There is a “bridge” to use for crossing 441/27, USE IT!!!!!! ( BAN THE GOLF CARS TO STREET USE, they BELONG ON THE COURSE “ONLY”

Whats the difference. ? Theres always the people who swear the world revolves around them and we just live in it. Theyll start to “think” when they get rammed by a car.

RICH1 07-15-2021 05:13 AM

When I almost bought in Spruce Creek , I was approached by a Spruce Creek resident who assure me that he could get me a Villages Gate card and a " Pirate " fake ID card to use The Villages amenities! I didn't know this man from Adam but he felt comfortable enough to approach me! ....

Time to move. You live in the WRONG community. The permitted use of golf carts is a major attraction and a key component of The Village’s lifestyle.

thevillagernie 07-15-2021 05:42 AM

Not legal

It's one road past where you turn to get to Stonecrest golf course. You can see the guard house for Spruce Creek when you approach the light.

A lot more protection from what? Mosquitoes, maybe. If you are in a golf car...ANY golf car...that is struck by a car, Newton's laws of physics will prescribe the outcome. It won't be pretty.

How do you suggest they get to the golf courses?

You do realize that TV was designed to be a"a golf cart community", don't you?

Dr Winston O Boogie jr 07-15-2021 06:37 AM

It's not legal but I don't understand why it cannot be made so.

Why not allow golf carts to cross as pedestrians do? Push the button, wait for the walk signal and drive your cart across next to the crosswalk.

I used to live in Silver Lake and it drove me crazy that I would have to drive two miles in my golf cart to get the the CVS that was less than a quarter mile from my house.

It's crazy that the only way across is the bridge. When we had the hurricane and 2017 and the cart path was flooded, they allowed crossing at Wales Plaza. Why not allow it all the time?

merled 07-15-2021 06:43 AM

Crossing 441

You are correct, that is the only legal crossing on 441 for any kind of golf cart.

Atomic Cart

Not even atomic is legal to cross there.

Low Speed Vehicles are not allowed to be on (or even cross) roads that have a speed limit over 35MPH.

Wrong.
It's legal to cross in an LSV.

tvbound 07-15-2021 07:42 AM

Given that every state I've ever been to requires powered boats (even 10' Jon boats) and snowmobiles, to be registered and to have that registration prominently displayed, I was really surprised to learn that the same doesn't apply to golf carts in Florida.

Waltdisney4life 07-15-2021 08:18 AM

I think the guy who got killed on 441 was driving an Atomic or something similar.

Why are you trying to mess with paradise? Do you even own a golf cart?

EviesGP 07-15-2021 08:38 AM

It is a bit odd that someone can cross nearly any street or highway in a motorized wheelchair, but not in a golf cart?

Insane people.

I purposely avoid driving the cart in the fray of regular vehicular traffic.
One good clip and you are off the road and into lala land.

Take an hour one day and watch how people drive.
Those who put themselves into the point of extremis are the ones who wind up in an accident.

Myself, I choose my routes to stay away from cars.

The bigger peril, all the trucks with the long trailers. I watched one ( definitely needed maintenance) as the truck pulled it the trailer was drifting into the multimodal here on Morse.

Not cool.

I commend the layout in the southern parts (below 466) here where the GC lanes are off the vehicle roads. Much safer

From what I can see (on Google Maps), that is not accessible from TV, since it's in Spruce Creek South...

People living in Spruce Creek South are allowed to cross 441 by the traffic light that is by their community using their golf carts. That will allow them access to Walmart and Aldi, Lowes, etc. They can also access the shopping center by Spruce Creek, they have a golf cart gate inside the community. To the best of my knowledge you cannot access the shopping center without going through Spruce Creek South community. Do not confuse Spruce Creek, which is further north, with Spruce Creek South that is accross the street from Walmart.

Everybody is entitled to their opinion regarding golf carts. My opinion is be careful what you wish for. You know.. sort of like “let a sleeping dog lie”.

yankygrl 07-15-2021 02:24 PM

In the last 2 days I have seen what I believe to be golf carts BUT THEY COULD BE those weird cars that can be used as golf carts, traveling on Buena Vista and crossing 466a and 466. 1 had a license plate the other did not, neither have the “street legal” plate. To my knowledge, in TV you can’t drive a cart on any road over 30 mph and you certainly aren’t supposed to cross either of the major east/west roads.

Heytubes 07-15-2021 04:11 PM

Hope the pirate guy knows if caught they will be jailed under Florida Statute per unauthorized use of facilities.

Go through the Paradise gate, past Lowes, past Aldis, past Walmart, past Sonic to 176th Pl, cross 441 into Spruce Creek.

Wouldn't you already have to be on the N side of 441 to do that?

Kinda' defeats the purpose of the discussion on how to cross to N of 441...
