Recommendations for best place to get eyeglasses

I have my eyeglass prescription, and now I'd like to know where to get eyeglasses made. Goodbye eyeglass readers. I hate getting old ;-) Thank you.

Sams, Costco or Zenni optical online. Sams membership is usually free after rebate promotion. Zenni has many coupons. Check slickdeals.net

Eyeglasses are one of the greatest rip offs in existence. Frames are often marked up 10x.

retiredguy123 08-03-2021 11:05 AM

I use Zenni.com. Excellent eyeglasses starting at about 7 dollars a pair.

Ben Franklin 08-03-2021 11:20 AM

Thank you both. How does one measure for fit with on-line glasses?

GrumpyOldMan 08-03-2021 11:23 AM

Use Eye Buy Direct online. I got tired of paying high prices and having to go back over and over until they got the prescription right. So far Eye Buy Direct has gotten it right every time except once, and I contacted them and they sent me another pair that was right. And the prices are very low.

I use Zenni, but will try this one next time.

How do you measure what size glasses will fit your head? I only use readers, so I don't have a size to give them.

Vikingjunior 08-03-2021 01:37 PM

Walmart now has all brand name glasses no more cheap junk.

I dunno. I guess I would go to a local optometrist and ask them to measure me.

In my case, that and the iris offsets are on my prescription I got from the Optometrist at the VA.

Sadly the VA doesn't do glasses, they sub-contract it out to a crappy company. While my glasses are free through them, they just aren't worth the hassle.

To be clear, the VA Optometrists are great, the private glass company sucks.

You can upload your face picture from a device to show how it would look. You can print a measuring tool from the website. The size of frames are listed in the description

How to Measure Your PD | Zenni Optical

Not sure which measurements you are asking about.

I have used HindSight in Pinellas plaza for years. I need progressive lens with prisms, etc. The local companies send these out, and 2 weeks later you get glasses, Hindsight does these is 1 to 2 days, and they are close by if i need repairs or adjustments. I consider the prices reasonable as I cannot use the 'cheater' type glasses.

Babubhat 08-03-2021 02:03 PM

Warbyparker.com will send you frames to try on for free. They will charge a bit more than Zenni. It was one of the fastest growing companies

I have used HindSight. They have very good customer service. I did have problems with the glasses, but they expedited a new pair the same day. My only issue with them is they are a bit expensive. I can certainly recommend them for someone that wants a local brick-and-mortar instead of online.

Ben Franklin 08-03-2021 04:48 PM

Thanks everyone. I did run over to HindSight. They wanted over $200 for the same style frame EBD and Zenni had for about $70. I'll also look at warbyparker.com

There are so many different frames, lenses, coatings, etc., that it's nearly impossible to compare apples with apples. I have been using Flexon titanium frames for over 20 years with great results. I have had excellent lenses and also had some bad ones placed in those frames. I can't remember the name of the company but they are in Buffalo Ridge area, that is where I bought my last set 4 years ago and they are still excellent. I have a new prescription so I'm going back there on Friday to order my new ones, I generally get two pairs, regular and sun glasses.

Djean1981 08-03-2021 07:35 PM

Zenni.com
Ask your eye doctor for your pupil distance (pd). Or, follow the instructions on Zenni's site to measure it. Love the virtual try-on feature.

Villages Kahuna 08-04-2021 05:07 AM

Walmart. Good selection of frames and they get the lenses ground, probably by one of the same lens grinding services used by the more expensive glasses botiques. And lots less expensive.

Sam’s are the best deal out there. Will remake lenses in first 90 days if not happy. My mother couldn’t navigate progressive bifocal lenses, so they made new lenses with regular bifocal lenses. If frame breaks for any reason they replace for free. That is good up to a year and they don’t charge for “insurance “. Just the best deal around IMHO.

Zenni Optical online. About 1/3 the cost of a retail store.

JayK! 08-04-2021 06:44 AM

Walmart, Sam’s Club, Costco

I’ve used Warby Parker for single vision lenses. Some of the reviewers said their lenses got lots of scratches. Sure enough, mine did as well. They had all the same features as glasses I’ve gotten from other companies which never had those scratches. I am not careless at all with my glasses so there was no reason for scratches other than the glasses are cheaply made

DonnaNi4os 08-04-2021 08:04 AM

Go to Ron at ClearView Optix 352-259-6789. He’s amazing and has a unique selection of quality frames and glasses. He will help you choose a pair that fits your face and personality. He’s awesome.

You need to provide online companies with your pupil distance (PD), which is the distance in millimeters between your pupils. It is easy to do yourself, or you can ask an optical store to measure it with a handheld machine. It only takes a few seconds and most of them will do it for free. I had mine measured at Sam's Club.

Clear View Optix near Mulberry Rec ctr. Fine personalized service. By appointment to reduce waiting and crowding.

I could not believe the prices that googles4u were selling glasses, so I gave them a try, it takes about 10 days to get them, but I purchased 100% Titanium frames and my prescription with coated lenses. Bifocals for less than $90. Their service is wonderful, guarantee against (I dropped them and broke the plastic lenses, told them it was my fault, sent pictures and they sent me another pair at no charge, they even paid for the shipping, very good people

Try Hindsight in Pinellas Plaza
I had my eyeglasses in one day
Good Luck

I like Peepers Eye Care at Colony Plaza. 352-259-1621. I've gotten two pair of glasses there over the years. Nice staff and very efficient

Ralpha 08-04-2021 10:07 AM

I think Hindsight is excellent. They are professional and knowledgeable.

I just got a pair of progressive with Transitions XtraActive (darkens in a car and under a hat) lenses with Titanium frames for $188.39 after all coupons. Lenscrafters wanted $1500, 2 local stores were between $1000 and $1100. I got these from EYEBUYDIRECT.COM (EBD). They always have LOTS of different coupons which can reduce the price by 30-40%

Now while I am not saying the EBD frames are as good quality (I have no way to tell but they are fine by me and sure seem the same as the $400 ones from local stores) I can buy 5 to 6 pairs for the price of ONE PAIR from any of the local stores. Been buying from EBD for probably 7-8 years without any issues. Last pair lasted me 4 years and only reason I replaced them was Rx changed.

Zenni and the others are excellent as well but have nowhere near the selection of frames & lenses as EBD. Can't beat their price.

I go locally for an exam and a prescription and order elsewhere.

Thanks again everyone. I went back to HindSight and picked out a cheaper frame, since I am not a fashion aficionado, and I need them quickly. It is too hard for me to measure my own PD, as one of my eyes drifts to one side. I was also concerned about the frames fitting my fat head. HindSight measured my PD, so now I have it and then they said come back in half an hour. When I got back they were ready.

My nest pair will be from an on-line site, probably from Warby Parker as I liked their site and actually spoke with someone there.

Thanks again.

Red Rose 08-04-2021 03:22 PM

I went to Hindsight once to see what they charge and didn't go with them because they're so expensive. I did purchase a pair of glasses at Sam's Club. They are very reasonably priced and I'm happy with my purchase.

DaleDivine 08-04-2021 06:53 PM

Sam's Club or Walmart.

Three is an optical outlet in the bestbuy shopping center, that has very reasonable prices.
