Massey

Hello! My husband and I are closing in September on our first house in TV! I’ve been on here researching and reading for the past couple weeks. Thank you for all the very useful information.!!
My big question right now is about Masseys. I know that they do pest control for the lawn, but do they actually do landscaping services like mowing, weeding, taking care of the palm trees…
Thank you so much.

retiredguy123 08-07-2021 11:28 AM

Not sure about trees, but they do mowing, weeding, irrigation maintenance, pest control for inside the house, and termite treatment.

fdpaq0580 08-07-2021 11:34 AM

Call them.

I suggest you call Massey or the only answer that counts.

Or, go to:

Pest Control, Termite Protection & Lawn Care Services | Massey Services

villagetinker 08-07-2021 11:41 AM

OP, really good lawn care has been a real problem for the last 2 years, I had Deans for 8 years, they could not keep their workers, quality went down. Had to change. It appears many of the lawn care companies have a similar problem with a rotating work force that significantly affects the quality of the lawn care. Once you are here, observe your lawn against your neighbors, if you find better ask who they use and then if necessary make a decision to switch. IMHO, you will probably switch many times.

Stu from NYC 08-07-2021 01:04 PM

We have had Massey for pest control and happy.

Irrigation was more recent and in 6 months have had 3 people taking care of this as people keep leaving.

Had them for fertilizer and weed control and found out they did rather little for what we paid them. Turned this over to our lawn guy and not sure how good a job he has done so far (too soon to tell).

Have heard from several people their grass cutting dept is a revolving door by a number of Massey employees.

I recently cancelled my Massey services for pest control and irrigation maintenance. I am going to try to do my own pest control, since I have never had any insects in my house, and 80 percent of my exterior walls butt up against a concrete slab. I cancelled the irrigation service because the people they sent were not very experienced in irrigation systems. I still have Massey for mowing, fertilizing, and termites.

What Ma$$ey does best is stick their hand in your pocket. We had 'em a short while and dropped 'em for Deans.

As Seniors Vs crime says
Do Not Sign Up for a contract with any company. Period.
On a monthly basis you can get rid of them for poor service.
Check with your neighbors to see if they are satisfied.

jack.hunter00@yahoo.com 08-08-2021 05:02 AM

Don't use PAX OR ISOM for mowing services. POOR SERVICE.

llmcdaniel 08-08-2021 05:13 AM

Oh, they will tell you they provide all those services, but if you’re a snow bird, beware. The minute you leave, the only thing that will be done is the mowing, and that won’t be every week. Our neighbors sent us pics of the weeds, overgrown shrubs, untrimmed trees, etc. Calls were made, promises were made, and nothing happened. We fired them and do not hesitate to tell others.

We have had them for years and are currently searching for another company. They have
done a terrible job on our lawn and it is a disgrace. Call SVC (Seniors vs Crime) before signing for any landscaping company. But Massey is terrible!!:ohdear:

Cincinnatus 08-08-2021 06:18 AM

Bad experience with Massey. Recommend you find someone different.

bonrich 08-08-2021 06:23 AM

We have had Massey for insect control, termites, etc for years and have been pleased with service. Have not heard many positives about the lawn services, since they just started them. I signed up for the sprinkler service since I am still snowbirding and had the need to use them. My house watch, during a sprinkler check, called me with a report of a geyser in my front yard. I called Massey on Friday PM and they were at our house on Monday AM and replaced the lost head, N/C. So far, so good.

Ski Bum 08-08-2021 06:57 AM

I have 2 properties and use Dean's at one and Massey at the other. We hired Dean's at our first house, but they don't mow in the neighborhood at the second home. Massey does, so we gave them the contract. As far as I know, neither will do any pruning. Point is, you do need to call. After a year, we cancelled the mow portion at both properties and hired a one-man company. Neither Dean's or Massey tried to hold us to the contract. In fact, I think they were happy to be rid of it. Both do a great job on the pest control side.

After rotating through 3 lawn guys I bought a lawnmower and edger and it’s the best decision I ever made.

Petersweeney 08-08-2021 07:21 AM

If you like weeds pick massy

mskaggs 08-08-2021 07:37 AM

VillageTinker, who do you use now and are you pleased with them?

merrymini 08-08-2021 07:51 AM

I have used Deans for the last several years. They do not do any trimming of shrubs just lawn. They are okay but it seems that people go through several lawn services while here. It appears that all these lawn services have a lot of personnel changes. We kept Deans instead of a smaller service because we can count on them to show up and not take a powder on us which may be more likely with a smaller, personal company. None of them seem especially exceptional.

When we moved to the villages they were at our door the 1st day knocking and bothering us, and then they came back 4 times after that, calling knocking harassing harassing. And then we realized they were more expensive than other companies. Their employees get a sales commission if possibly questionable?...

We had Massey for about 6 months for lawn service, 3 times charged my cc, but didn't perform the service. Supervisor apologized and said they are problems with some crews, after 3 dropped them. As someone else posted you will go through a few services. Also we found it difficult to find any services for Palm's

We use Brian's Lawn Care Services. Brian is sort of the new guy (as I understand it) in the lawn-care industry in The Villages. No employees, does it all himself. Honest, reliable and reasonable. He doesn't do insect control for the lawn (we use another company for that) but he'll do just about everything else lawn-related. His number is (352) 454-2070.

butlerism 08-08-2021 08:16 AM

Mowing and weeding... no

Palm Tree Care..... yes, but you will find yourself fertilizing more.

The will do irrigation, grass care, palm care.
They will not spray for weeds (outside of the lawn) or will they touch a flower bed.
No shrubs.

Better yet, get rid of the Palms and Plant some Perennials.
I removed a big tree and a large Palm. Yard looks so much better.

Plant a Huge Agave. No Maintenance.

Everyone bitches about yard care

MINIMALIZE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have not personally used them but a couple neighbors do. Based on what I see I will look elsewhere when I decide it's time to hire a service for my lawn. Best to observe the best looking lawns in your neighborhood and find out who they use.

I don't believe Massey does bush and tree trimming. We have Massey and they do a pretty good just with the things they do, including irrigation services. But if you can find a local, single person to go with for mowing and bush/tree trimming, that is the best way to go, in my opinion. Much more reliable.

flamilak 08-08-2021 10:07 AM

Thank you all for the useful information! We will call around and also ask our neighbors. Great suggestions and we will also call Brian, the new guy!

Villages Kahuna 08-08-2021 10:11 AM

Initially Massey did everything at our house. Then I “experimented” with other service providers, with consistently unsatisfactory results. We went back to Massey doing everything at our house. Their technicians are great, and customer service unparalleled by ANY of the other providers. I’d recommend contracting with them for everything (other than tree and bush pruning and general landscape work, which are services I don’t think they offer).

A quick response to questions or complaints (hardly ever!) and Massey is as close as your telephone.

august2959 08-08-2021 11:39 AM

Massey's does it all: mowing, weeding, irrigation, edging, pest control, termite, etc. BUT you do have to keep on them about the weeding.

jimkerr 08-08-2021 11:41 AM

We have Massey for our grass and bush fertilization. They do a great job.

mvbird 08-08-2021 12:07 PM

Landscaping- a never ending story

Landscape services are a headache ... Best if and when you do it yourself. Some do mow-blow-go, some only palms and bushes, some bushes only, hardly anyone wants to do weeding. A dream if you can fine 1 that does it all. Pay promptly always ! Even so keep an ongoing list of who is available... inevitably you'll need to start calling when personnel, costs, complaints or services change.
My father-in-law used to advise "find a need and fill it". There's a real $$$$ opportunity in TV to collect info on landscapers, review the good work, pan the poor work, no-shows.
Neighbors should also try to use the same services. Crazy to have different trucks driving around TV each doing their own specialized service.

Catalina36 08-08-2021 12:36 PM

Yes to all those services, not sure about weeding? I own and I am a snowbird. I find Massey to be very reliable and professional. I use their weekly landscaping services. I also use their quarterly services for irrigation. They always call me to let me know they will be on the property to check my irrigation. I find them very reliable.

Michael G. 08-08-2021 01:23 PM

Why do neighbors with small lawns walk around the neighborhood everyday but wouldn't put a
push mower in front of them and mow their own lawn?......strange

DylanTodd 08-08-2021 01:43 PM

My wife and I use Massey because they were the existing company already servicing the property. If you have already picked a home and if the landscaping is being upkept in a way that you like I would just call whomever the existing company is and continue with their service.

Specifically about Massey, we don't have any real qualms about the service. I like that I can call in and speak to a person and have any questions addressed pretty quickly. That's one benefit of a larger company like them.

For me personally, I don't like splitting hairs agonizing over the landscaping company. Life's too short, get out golfing :-)

charlie1 08-08-2021 03:15 PM

The quality of the job is directly related to the quality of the people that physically performs the services! We had Massey for a little over a year just as they started having staffing issues. Lawn would go weeks during growing season without mowing, seldom edged, and the pest control and ferritization was unpredictable. Loved that I could call them but they never resolved the issue or took action. Our lawn suffered and became the worst looking lawn on the block where before it was very nice. We now have had Deans for about a year and our lawn is again looking good. Their services have been done like clockwork never missing a beat. We have had the same people doing the work for the whole year. Any question I do have are responded to immediately and actions are taken. However, I do know that this can change overnight if someone leaves! Best advise I have is ask your neighbors that have nice lawns who they are using.

$40 a month and a Sunbird many of these residents.

DALEPQ 08-08-2021 09:57 PM

We are seasonal in TV, for 6 mo's. Have 2 houses that we have Chad's Lawn and Landscape service when we are gone. Have had good results from them for 2+ years.
They do the lawn cutting as needed. I have them do the shrubs on as request basis.
No problems, good service will continue to use them. Ph.# is 352-430-5416
As for "bugs" I have been applying "Home Defense" both inside and outside, no bugs!
Have no experience with Massey, but have not heard good comments about them.

Simple reason, tired of mowing my lawn and worth it to have someone else take care of it for us.

We have had Massey for over 4-5 years and kept thinking they will get better. They never
did and our lawn is a total disgrace. It has been that way for over a year but their bill is
always on time. It is a disgrace!!:ohdear:

bilcon 08-09-2021 08:32 AM

We have used Massey for 13 years and have had only a few problems and they were corrected. We use them for pest control, lawn care (not mowing) and termite control. Get to know your tech. It really helps. We talk to our guys all the time and make sure they are doing the job. Never see any critters in our home. We are, fortunately, here full-time so we can observe them. It is difficult if your are a snow bird. Many times their treatment requires you to water the lawn, and if you are not here, that is a problem . Had another company in our first home and caught him cutting corners. Bye Bye. PS. Make them call you when they are coming to do a treatment, if you are full-time.

Thank you so much.

You did not say where your new house is located. This makes a difference. Unfortunately, if you are south of 44 you will have Floratam grass. I have been in Florida my entire life. I can tell you from experience floratam grass is very hard to maintain. The chinch bugs will eat it until your lawn disappears. It is not drought tolerant so you will need to constantly make sure it is getting water. The reason lawn cutting services are a poor choice is they go from lawn to lawn spreading what ever bugs or disease that was in one lawn to your lawn. We use Deans for lawn and house insects. But, i maintain my own lawn. If you look in our villa neighborhood you can tell all the lawns that have lawn companies vs the lawns that homeowners maintain. The homeowner maintained lawns look really good. The lawn care lawns are all patches of grass eaten by chinch bugs. If you can, cut your own lawn and use a service like Deans for the bugs. Just my opinion. Good luck in your new home.
