speed limits

does anyone really know the speed limit on the golf cart roads?

tvbound 10-04-2021 06:12 PM

Popping some corn and waiting for Bogie Shooter to burst out of his telephone booth - to post some contact info. LOL

Bill14564 10-04-2021 06:24 PM

Since golf carts are limited by law to 20mph and LSVs to 25mph those would be effective speed limits.

There are no speed limits for bicycles though there are probably few that would travel that fast on the MMP.

There was an opinion from a few years ago that since the MMPs are on CDD property and since the CDD has no enforcement authority, no speed limit can be enforced on the MMPs.

One question I don't recall seeing a good answer for: If a LEO determines your unlicensed golf cart is traveling faster than 20mph can he ticket you for having an unlicensed LSV? That is the main thing I would worry about.

You can and perhaps should ask the police, they will direct you. My logo is daves. should you get a ticket, have an accident. DAVES says is of no value what so ever. As I understand it, there a two types of golf carts. The ones used on the multi modal paths, the speed limit is 20 mph. The street legal ones, you need plates, insurance and a license to drive, the speed limit is 35 mph.

Rumor perhaps. I met a guy who claims to be involved in selling golf carts and he said the police are clamping down. He went through the whole story. If, you are caught doing more than 20mph in a golf cart with no plates and insurance, and there is no shortage of people who turn up the speed control it will cost you around $300. You do not need to be going more than 20 mph. Having a cart that is set to do more than 20 mph can result in the same fine.

Correction -- The street legal carts are limited to 25 MPH. They may legally travel on a street with a posted speed limit up to 35MPH.

rhood 10-04-2021 06:52 PM

I think that even on private property, like multi modal paths and parking lots, etc they can get you for careless driving ? Would speeding on the trails fall into that category ? If there was an accident on a cart path and it was attributed to excessive speed ?

The only traffic law that can be enforced on the MMP is DUI.

CoachKandSportsguy 10-05-2021 05:44 AM

With the numerous number of safety devices on golf carts these days, and a head on at 25 mph with another at 25 is a 50 mph impact under a bridge, not sure why everyone wants to go over 20 in retirement with deteriorating reflexes and vision . .

On the multiple modal paths or road, you can be fined for a unregistered golf cart. They cannot give you a ticket for speeding. It will end up costing you around $600 between court costs and getting your golf cart certified that the speed is set correct. Yes DUI can also happen on the paths.

Curious: who wrote the ticket and how did they catch him?

Again, everyone is an expert.

Windguy 10-05-2021 06:39 AM

I have noticed signs as I enter TV that state that the speed limit is 20 MPH unless posted otherwise, so I think that means the cart paths are 20 MPH.

Speeders, other than those who are late for a tee-time, should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

Lindaws 10-05-2021 07:12 AM

You don’t register a cart. You don’t even have to,have ins. (foolish if you don’t)

La lamy 10-05-2021 07:17 AM

When I was stopped by a cop for not doing my full stop, she also told me to slow down. Not doing a stop is definitely an offence, but not sure if going over 20 MPH is.

The information is at the 15:20 mark in the video. Golf carts: 20mph, LSV: 25mph.

Not true. Any criminal offence can be charged including reckless driving, not only DUI...

Speeding under 30 MPH of the limit is not criminal in Florida.

billethkid 10-05-2021 08:44 AM

What is the need that drives one to go 5 mph faster.....in a golf cart?

The discussions of pros/cons/legal/not of "speeding" at 20 mph plus or minus 5 mph are amusing.

jimkerr 10-05-2021 09:00 AM

There are no speed limits on the MMP’s. People say 20, but there is no posted limit on any path. The only place there are signs telling you what the speed limit is, is on our roads.

Florida Statutes regarding golf cars

Florida Statute 320.01(22) provides this definition of a Golf Cart:

(22) “Golf cart” means a motor vehicle that is designed and manufactured for operation on a golf course for sporting or recreational purposes and that is not capable of exceeding speeds of 20 miles per hour.

Florida Statute 316.212 provides this interesting information which may or may not apply to our multi modal paths, since pedestrians and bicycles are also allowed to use them:

(b) Golf cart operation on sidewalks adjacent to specific segments of municipal streets, county roads, or state highways within the jurisdictional territory of the local governmental entity if:
1. The local governmental entity determines, after considering the condition and current use of the sidewalks, the character of the surrounding community, and the locations of authorized golf cart crossings, that golf carts, bicycles, and pedestrians may safely share the sidewalk;
2. The local governmental entity consults with the Department of Transportation before adopting the ordinance;
3. The ordinance restricts golf carts to a maximum speed of 15 miles per hour and permits such use on sidewalks adjacent to state highways only if the sidewalks are at least 8 feet wide;
4. The ordinance requires the golf carts to meet the equipment requirements in subsection (6). However, the ordinance may require additional equipment, including horns or other warning devices required by s. 316.271; and
5. The local governmental entity posts appropriate signs or otherwise informs residents that the ordinance exists and applies to such sidewalks.

I don’t think golf carts are allowed on any roads with the speed limit of 35 MPH or more. Morse Blvd., north of 466 is 30 MPH and there are golf cart/bicycle lanes there. Other sections of Morse and also Buena Vista do not allow golf carts.

LSV’s have a speed limit of 25 MPH, not 35 MPH.

I have never heard of “registration” for a golf cart, LSV’s yes, but Golf Carts no.

I think what he is saying
1. a golf cart by law has a maximum speed of 20mph
2. if you are going over 20mph then by law you must be driving an LSV.
3. Since it is now determined based on speed you have an LSV, then you need to have it registered.

See....there's always a way to get you.

True, golf carts are not registered. What the poster is saying is that since you choose to drive faster than the legal 20mph you can be sited for driving an unregistered vehicle, thats all.
