The Social Network is about the founders of Facebook.

Jesse Eisenberg plays the role of Mark Zuckerberg who made Facebook happen. I had never heard of Jesse Eisenberg before I saw this movie, but when it was over, I looked at Mr. Boomer and said, “Wow. That kid looks like Academy Award material to me.” But I really do not know anything about what gets an Academy Award nomination. I do know though that this movie mesmerized me from start to finish.

Zuckerberg is played as an obsessive genius. (Aren’t they all.) He’s got a brain in rapid fire. We first see Zuckerberg on a date with his girlfriend. In conversation he talks so fast that I am sure the pace of the dialogue was intended to mimic the speed of his brain and the speed with which Facebook took over – the world. His girlfriend says, “Dating you is like dating a Stairmaster.”

There is not much likeable about Zuckerberg, comes off pretty cold. Kind of like a machine himself. Oh, every now and then, you get a little glimmer of warmth, but it is only a glimmer and might just be the stuff of Hollywood.

The script is tightly written with lots of terrific lines. I think the thing I liked most about this movie is that, not only is it entertaining, but it gives the audience something to think about and could lead to some interesting discussions.

Oh, and I absolutely loved the last scene. Emotion meets Technology. I think I must have been smiling a sad little smile during that scene. I saw it as a modern-day, weird, skewed version of the most famous movie line of all, “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.”

So anyway, I really liked the movie and you might like it, too. But I have to include a disclaimer here. -- This post is coming from probably one of the few people left on the planet who will not join Facebook. I still cannot quite get into this century. So what do I know?

On Oprah last week, Zuckerberg gave away something like $100 million to improve NJ schools. But the thing that stuck in my mind the most, was the statistic that one of every 14 people ON THE PLANET EARTH has a Facebook page. I do. Almost everyone I know does.

Boomer, catch up with the rest of the planet -- get a Facebook page. It is easy, free, and if you use it, as much fun as TOTV. :024:

Whalen and Boomer, make that three! I have a Facebook page. I've tried twice to get in the groove! I even started a little farm. Many, many peeps i know love Facebook. I must be missing something ... I just cannot get into It.

I'll betcha that a lot of the "one in 14" people that have a page gave up on it.

Still, Facebook is incredibly popular and I'm going to see the movie!

I have one, but to be honest it is nice to have but I think actually talking to people is better I just post inspirational quotes on it now and not everyday anymore

I have a page too, but only joined because my kids (adults in their 30s) post pictures there - they told me to join so they wouldn't have to send them twice. Told me I needed to advance a little, technologically.

Kids in their teens and twenties probably don't want to "friend" their parents yet. Too much information sometimes. I only have a few friends - maybe 14? And mostly those are people who asked to "friend" me. I rarely post anything and don't find it all that exciting either, just like to see the grandkids latest photos.

I have no interest whatsoever in Twitter. But I'm also the type who hates to get a new cellphone because then I have to learn how to use it. Another dinosaur.

I would like to see the movie, though.

I had a Facebook page also and enjoyed it briefly....but I had a bad virus that almost crashed my PC -
(and I have excellent security, I thought) - it was traced back to Facebook, so be careful!

Just because a person has no social skills I wouldn't call him autistic and BTW, I think to say that is rather rude and shows your lack of understanding of people who have disabilities. Let's not forget all the wonderful people in the world who have disablilities who have invented, etc... things that we now can't live without.
Facebook and Twitter too(I have both) are a quick way to communicate . Cuts out alot of needless words, especially Twitter.

At first (for the first year) I was the same way. I didn't want something else to "check" that would waste my time. I didn't care what was going on "up to the minute" with everyone.

But, slowly, I started to use Facebook more and more. I get a lot of "friend" requests, but I only accept those from people I really want to hear from. Some of my friends are past employees, family, my veterinarian in Alabama, past clients of mine and other people who I find interesting, talented, smart and funny. When they post something it is of interest to me. It keeps me in touch with their lives, and they in mine. It is so easy to share photos with everyone with just one click -- emailing is so difficult in comparison.

My little group doesn't post boring, trivial stuff but instead posts things that we really want to hear about.

I recently posted photos of The Villages, and now one of my past clients is coming to check things out -- I'll bet they buy a home here!!

Anyway, now I love facebook. To each his own :o

I get Jesse Eisenberg mixed up with Michael Cera a great deal. Michael Cera is that guy from Juno and Superbad. They look quite a bit a like.

Mudder, I taught children who were very much like Mr Zuckerberg, they were wonderful students, but very much like how he is portrayed in the movie. They were very focused, just as he was/is. I wasn't "dissing" him, he is brilliant, obviously, but in the opening scenes he is very argumentative and condescending towards a young woman who goes to Boston University, and he goes to Harvard. He is portrayed as cold, indifferent, and almost bordering on being sociopathic. It is just a movie, and he claims it to be a work of fiction, which I am sure parts of it are. I never met Sean Parker, I did meet and teach Shawn Fanning's younger brother at Harwich Middle School, and I met him when Napster was very new. These young men are very bright and innovative.

Since I have a master degrees from Northeastern and one from Harvard, both in education, 30 years apart from each other, I understand the classification, educationally, of an autistic child/adult, then and now.

I apologize if I offended you, it wasn't intentional.

Ok, no offence taken, I must have been typing on the wrong side of the bed this morning. Since my degrees are from Tufts and Harvard we are like minded ! if you live in Mashpee you must be a nice person......several relatives live in Falmouth.

Good movie that will be one of the 5 up for the Academy next spring . . . too bad it was in The Villages for such a short time (I'm sure it will be back when nominated in March:thumbup:)! I liked the movie a lot and like "The Facebook" even more (yes, viruses are a problem). On a scale of 1-10 this is a 9.

Lets hear it for the world of internet communication.
 

The other day I got an email from a friend who lives in The Villages thanking me for sharing her birthday. (She is 99. I only know this because her daughter told me.) At the age of 99, she still drives, cooks and uses the internet and texts her daughter as she travels about the U.S. I wouldn't be surprised if she uses Facebook. She is so up on things.

I love Skype too. I am so glad I live in the age of internet communication.

The creators of Facebook show genius. Genius is poorly understood, just as is retardation. There are all kinds of ability and disability in this world among normal people, myself included.

There is much to miss if you are afraid to join Facebook. I am still begging a high school friend to learn the computer.
