Shrinkflation

Has anyone else noticed that not only does just about everything cost quite a bit more at the grocery store, but the package size of most things are also getting smaller.

B-flat 10-05-2021 06:26 PM

We buy Sunbelt Snack bars and it seems each time we purchase a box there’s less product in the individual package.

Laker14 10-05-2021 07:08 PM

Yes, I've noticed this, and yet, I keep gaining weight.
Maybe because I eat two 6.5 oz bars instead of one 10 oz. bar?

Garywt 10-05-2021 08:08 PM

Ice cream has been doing this for years, now other items are doing it as well.

The best value in my opinion is Publix Ice Cream still a half gallon, not 1.5 quarts.

I know I’m getting a little off topic but since the 90s we’ve loved Ben and Jerry’s ice cream. We stopped buying it when they introduced a new flavor recently and sales from the the flavor called “Change is Brewing” will help fund efforts to defund the police. I’ll die before I buy another Ben and Jerry’s ice cream. The link is below called “You are being redirected.”

You're getting a lot off topic. Why does just about every topic, even the seemingly most innocuous ones, have to turn political? :ohdear: This thread was about products shrinking in size and not anyone's opinion on Ben and Jerry's (who haven't even owned the company for the last 21 years) political beliefs whether you agree or disagree with them. When they go on sale "buy one get one free" I don't give a hoot about their political beliefs as long as they have Chunky Monkey in the freezer.

The ice cream change is coming : It’s to change the legal system by investing in mental health ,substance abuse ,counseling ,and health care all issues that affect many especially the poor given the chance people especially first time offenders can get better and even police forces know that mental health people showing up with the cops or without them can lower the temperature in many non criminal calls of stressed out people there are other ways to treat some offenders hold them accountable but help them get on track it’s better and cheaper then prison , thanks for the tip I’m going to buy a pint of it tomorrow go Red Sox

GrumpyOldMan 10-05-2021 09:40 PM

I never look at the package except to find the weight/volume and calculate the unit price. I do not count on the store's unit pricing, since they follow the package units, and every package can have a different unit - weight/volume/bites/whatever.

It's been a pretty common practice for a LONG time now to put less product in a larger package, the best example is cereal.

So, we buy on what brands we like, then on price per unit that we calculate. Problem solved.

talleyjm 10-06-2021 04:56 AM

Their ice cream is too inexpensive anyway.

Two Bills 10-06-2021 05:03 AM

I can suffer the sizes getting smaller in the packages, my main issue is getting into some of the packaging.
My poor wife has poorly arthritic hands, and getting into some containers/tins/packets is a nightmare for her if I am not around.
As for some of the thicker plastic welded items, one slip and you could lose a finger.
I also wish that my body packaging was shrinking at the same rate as the goods inside.
I swear my butt packaging is behind my knees now!:ohdear:

Luggage 10-06-2021 05:26 AM

Since the companies have turned political I have turned my back on them also.

Luggage 10-06-2021 05:27 AM

Tuna fish is a very big offender I actually call them up as they have one unit dimension on their cans and then other on the pouches that are totally different, I am actually referring to their calorie counts per unit but yours about the price per unit is also valid

I could so relate to this post. Sounds A LOT like our house. NOTHING is easy to open anymore! Won't get into the physcial aspects..........

M2inOR 10-06-2021 06:13 AM

Yes, pay attention to cost per ounce or pound rather than package. Math is a useful skill.

Plan your weekly meals by shopping the sales - BOGO, not the "2 for" price.

Remember that Publix and Winn-Dixie have rolling sales for many of their BOGO items "Buy One, Get One", and remember, if you purchase just one you still pay full price. Only the "2 for" sale items will get you the lower cost if you purchase only one.

Shop smarter, and use your math skills in these inflationary times.

Also important - register your profile, and remember to enter your phone number when checking out. Many times there are targeted savings as the stores monitor your past shopping. The apps also not only help you make your shopping list, but also remind you which aisle the items are located.

What’s the newest/biggest Insta Pot? My knockoff just doesn’t work anymore…..thx

rsmurano 10-06-2021 06:39 AM

charlieo1126@gmail-com - you are wrong and are promoting propaganda. Every government official that’s for defunding the police spend thousands a month for security. We need more police and we need more arrests and jail time for offenders, not keep letting them out on the streets to commit more crime

Inflation (more money / less goods) is obviously becoming an issue RECENTLY. That's the point.

"pretty common practice for a LONG time now", no. That's a cope.

I fully understand the need to make a profit. I don't understand why, when given the choice to increase the price or reduce the size of the product they choose to make the product smaller.

My best example is Publix hoagy rolls. I always bought a half pound of sliced deli meat - enough to make to satisfying sandwiches. About a year ago, I reduced the meat purchase to 4/10ths of a pound because I could not get a 1/4 pound of meat on the smaller roll.

Last week, I bought more hoagy rolls and found that they were too small to fit enough meat for a satisfying sandwich. So, now they have removed me as a buyer of the bread.

Customers are always a lot smarter than the marketers think. We understand inflation and can deal with it. All pricing is temporary. If it too expensive, we will wait until it is on sale and then load up. Do I think that when inflation is ended that the marketers will increase the product size - fuhgeddaboudit!

We've been though this before. Prime illustration. I still have coffee cans that I keep stuff like unsorted screws in. Prices are marked with an adjustiable stamp machine. They were a full pound and cost ninety-nine cents. Today they are 10 or so ounces and like 3.50.

Finchs 10-06-2021 08:23 AM

I recently bought Scott Paper Towels and was aghast to find the rolls were now single-ply--you could use them for kleenex, they are that thin and flimsy. The boxes of kleenex, BTW, now for the same price you get 65 sheets instead of the 84 they used to hold.
This is undercover inflation, your money buys a lot less product than it did a few years ago.

It is far more complex than that. As I posted elsewhere coffee used to be sold by the pound. It is now 10-13 ounces. If, you were still selling a pound it would of course be more expensive. Few people bother to figure out the cost per ounce and would buy the lower priced but actually more expensive 10-13 ounce size. What to charge is carefully watched by suppliers. A size reduction, a price increase, is often tried by section, by territory.

Wait until it is on sale. The way that works, somethings only sell when they are on sale.
If, the normal price, on which they sell far less is not high enough you cannot run a sale
because it would mean you are losing money on every item sold-a quick way to go bankrupt. When, an item is,"On Sale," the manufacturer can anticipate having more in inventory and the retail store knows to buy more. It is all charted. On the last,"Sale," we sold 50% more our sales are up down from that date so we need to order this much more or less.

That is another whole issue. There is no shortage of bias. First of all pure capitalism, pure communism exists NOWHERE except in books. History shows clearly that under capitalism, people interested in prosperity for themselves and their family produce far more goods, true wealth for all including their comrades. Then, does the reality of communism. Make the rulers wealthy. The others, the proletariat well they should work hard to produce for others-their comrads. It is a NICE concept. Except that is does not WORK. Hum, an interesting play on words.

Have we all forgotten the first oil embargo? Government price controls made for less supply. Long lines and a black market. A very small example of how government control, socialism/COMMUNISM works in the real world.

I don't know. Big tart is honing in too.

I remember when you could get a pop tart that was nearly covered edge to edge with icing and filled to match.

Now? These things are about a 1 inch strip down the middle. Not only that, the damn things must be 20% smaller than they were, as you could fit 4 more tarts per box. One pair on the side, one pair on the end.

It's utter madness! How am I going to get my fill of a toaster pastry when they shrink them away to just some faux lembas with a bit of filling sprayed in there!

Most important in the shrinking sizing is TOILET PAPER! 😂
Yep, take a closer look. Rolls are narrower - thinking the public won’t notice? Especially evident with Northern Tissue vs Charmin. Northern rolls aren’t even as wide as the holder roller they are put on. Is nothing sacred? 😂 😂

charlieo1126@gmail.com 10-06-2021 11:22 AM

When I was a kid I could get 2 for a quarter hot dog a couple of days a week , God the good old days they were soooooooo great , Gee I wish Herbert Hoover was President again

smacca56 10-06-2021 11:25 AM

Baking goods are getting smaller too. No more 5lb bags of sugar etc. Evaporated milk, chocolate chips are all smaller portions now too so you have to really be careful when buying stuff for your recipes that say 1- 16oz can or package of something because you now have to buy 2 to get 16 ozs.
