Dress code

On an executive 9 hole beginner course, what is the dress code. Planning our first ever round of golf in The Villages and all I have in Florida is shorts and t-shirts. Hoping t-shires are allowed on the executive courses. Thanks

Nope, no t-shirts. You need a collared shirt.

Golf The Villages
You will find the rules at that site. T-shirt is not enough, shorts are fine.

retiredguy123 10-15-2021 02:24 PM

T-shirts are not allowed. You need to wear a shirt with a collar. That rule even applies to the driving range.

And, here is another tip for the driving range. Place the basket under the ball shoot before you put in the token. I learned that one the hard way.

Shirt with a collar is required. You need tp purchase a golf shirt.

Thanks all, I could not find it but my wife now tells me she saw it.

Next question, do we need to keep score? My wife and I have never kept score. We play and whoever lost the fewest balls at the end of 9 holes wins. Our plan is to do the same thing in The Villages.

I don't keep score and some of my friends do not. I count the strokes for the hole I am on because you need to pick up the ball once you double par. Be careful what courses you select. Stay off of Pelican it is a ball loss course.

Just as long you don't hit more than 6 strokes on a PAR 3 and 7 on a PAR 4, you'll be fine in front of me... :icon_wink:

DARFAP 10-15-2021 03:36 PM

Golf standard: golf shirt

SIRE1 10-15-2021 03:52 PM

Another point, besides not wearing a T-shirt. There are no "beginner" golf courses in The Villages. The Executive course are for regular play, just shorter. So like a number of other people have posted, you don't need to keep score but you should keep track of the number of strokes. Typically double par is the maximum you should take on each and every hole (e.g. max of 6 strokes, including putts, on a par 3 hole). That is because there probably are a number of groups behind you that want to play. Be considerate and keep a steady pace, so you don't back up play.

retiredguy123 10-15-2021 04:06 PM

I think the dress code is defective. Here is the official dress code for men:

"Shirts shall have a collar and sleeves. Turtle-necks or mock turtle-necks are acceptable. (Min. 1/4 inch collars.)"

Can someone please explain how a mock turtle-neck shirt with a one quarter inch collar is different from a T-shirt? I think that all of my T-shirts would meet their definition for a mock turtle-neck.

CoachKandSportsguy 10-15-2021 04:14 PM

I buy all my golf shirts at the discount rack at any store which carries them. You can get a plain collared shirt, light weight for $20 or less. I never pay more than $40 dollars for a golf shirt unless its special. . . Goto Beales near buffalo ridge, and check out the discount rack, hit or miss for your size, but maybe $10 off season. .

bad golfer

CoachKandSportsguy 10-15-2021 04:15 PM

keeping score only is required for trophies and cash prizes. . . and usually that;s not on amateur day, which will be the day you play.

kkingston57 10-15-2021 05:00 PM

Interesting rules. Must wear a collared shirt, but can wear jeans.

It doesn't need to be a golf shirt. A polo shirt is fine, so is one of those funky hawaiian button-down shirts.

Carla B 10-15-2021 06:06 PM

Just go to a Beall's Outlet. A lot of the men around here could use a trip to Beall's Outlet, where there are dozens of inexpensive golf shirts that look so much better any day than tee shirts, especially the ones with the sleeves cut out.

tophcfa 10-15-2021 06:32 PM

Contrary to advise given, you don’t need a collared shirt. T shirts are not allowed, the shirt needs to have a buttoned opening in the front. We can thank Tiger for that updated relaxation in the men’s dress code. The women’s dress code is much more lenient, sleeveless shirts are allowed.

If you play like tiger woods, you can wear a mock turtleneck. Otherwise stick with a collared shirt.

If a man had written a post telling the women of the villages that they don't dress up to his standards I would be here pointing out he has no business policing the clothing choices of women. So I will do the same and suggest that your comment was out of line. If a man prefers to wear a t-shirt that is his choice unless he wishes to be on the golf course.

srixongolf1197 10-15-2021 07:43 PM

No need for a collared shirt at Oxford Golf Academy...no mats ever, grass 365 days a year best grass in the Villages area...better prices than The Villages ranges...better instructors....just a better place to practice and work on your game...

When my wife research golf she said that the courses were rated 1-4 with the 1’s we’re beginner courses. That is where we will go and later in the day with the hope there are not a ton of golfers around.

I didn't say you couldn't play them, I just suggested that you keep up the pace. That includes picking up the ball and moving on when you've taken 6 strokes on a par 3. And I checked The Villages Golf web site again, and confirmed that there are no "beginner" Executive courses.

That web page states "Executive Course Ratings The Executive Golf Courses are rated based on the difficulty level of the course. It is displayed on a scale of 1 to 4 with 1 being the friendliest and 4 the most challenging. This allows each resident to choose what playing level best suites them so they will be able to maximize their enjoyment when they come out and play." By friendliest, they mean those with few hazards and shorter holes.

All I am suggesting is that we all try to be considerate to the groups behind you. For a true beginner, I would suggest the pitch & putt courses where one can get a lot of practice on their short game first.

Could never get my head round that one.
Once played in TV with a man wearing bib and brace denim, and a John Deere cap!
Local story is that one of the Morse family played in them, so it became OK in TV.
Turn up to play in them at my home course, and you are out of luck for a game. As it should be!

T-shirts are now allowed at the driving range.
I was getting ready to play Escambia one day and a man checked in wearing a T-shirt
with logos on it. They let him play.

You pick up after THREE over par, NOT DOUBLE PAR...
Par 3 pick up after 6.
Par 4 pick up after 7 NOT 8.
Par 5 pick up after 8 NOT 10.
Oh yeah, and on an executive course par 4 hole, you DO NOT have to wait for them to clear the green...

Guess you don’t go to Walmart with golf cart. The range is right behind Walmart on off 466 in Oxford. While you there go across street to Goodwill, they have plenty of golf shirts for 4 to 10 bucks. :ohdear:

rhood 10-16-2021 04:54 AM

Don’t have wait? Depends on how far you can hit driver?
:icon_wink: Nobody wants to see ball bouncing through them.

I would classify El Santiago as a beginners course as it only has BIG holes.
Sarasota is next with BIG holes and regular holes.

And another thing, if you're NEW to golf, take THE GOOD GOLF SCHOOL class located at Colony Plaza rec center. Lots of good tips about playing golf and how to work the golf request/reservation tee times.

Turtle Mound and Sarasota are the easiest, shortest courses. Sarasota has 2 cups on every hole...1 regular size and 1 larger cup, you can use either one. The starter shack has a pamphlet of all the courses listed by easiest to hardest.

I keep score by the number of Pars I get and the number of balls I lose. I limit each hole to double par.

thelegges 10-16-2021 05:53 AM

Yesterday a couple new to the villages played in foursome in front of us. He wore a t-shirt with Superman on the front. Female had a “just do it” white tank top, with visible black sports bra. Both looked to be in their 80s.

Both of our parents who taught us a a young age rules of golf, and dress code, for the club would have rolled over in their urns.

They checked in ahead of us. Was a little surprised no warning. Guess who is as the starter shack makes the determination, how the rules of dress code are enforced

So True.

In my young'n days, I showed up at the driving range in a T-Shirt.
Mr. Token would not give me a coin.
Since, I've seen tons of wardrobe violators practicing their skill-sets.

You will find the rules at that site. T-shirt is not enough, shorts are fine.

I checked the link that was given, but I'm either looking in the wrong area, or the information on shirt collars is not addressed. Help me out, please.
