Has anyone ever had any GOOD LUCK at the beauty academy in The Villages. I have heard a lot of negatives but nothing good!

You could be saving me from a month or 2 of bad hair days!!!!!!:cryin2:

My daughter and I had side-by-side pedicures - she had (in our opinions) better service than I did - the student she was assigned just seemed more competent, but both pedicures were fine. I would never take a chance on my hair, though I have friends who seem to have "easy hair" and could probably get it cut anywhere. I have enough problems with my hair to go the unrecommended route and try someone totally unknown, let alone new.

color is reasonable BUT the duration of visit is lengthy, waiting for teacher to sign off student...

I also had a pedicure and that was fine. But... I also went quite a few times to have my hair dyed. The first student I had for my first 3 visits was fine and yes, it does take about 3 hours. The next student I had made my visit such a horror that I will never go back again! It has been recommended on this site to go to Victoria's on 466.

Don't trust the aesthetic "eye" of stylists looking ghoulish
 

I went there to see about getting color and cut. I am used to stylists being pretty far out with their own hair and makeup. However, at this school, the student they brought to me for consult was a sweet girl, but I could not get past the ugly collection of facial piercings and facial and neck tattoos, and Scare Hair she had inflicted on herself.

I realize she and other students would not be doing that to their clients, but in business--especially in the aesthetic business--ugly and ghoulish is not the way to bring in business from people over age 30!

To me, a competent manager and instructor would be honest and tell the student that this is not appropriate and certainly not attractive (unless the manager/instructor is too immature to see it themselves). This is not the way to educate and train a student to be employable.

I say that because this is not the only business where young people are being enabled to think that they look acceptable and employable, because political correctness ("tolerance") rules.

Oh, how I do agree with you. I know I am old fashioned about this, but that is just how I see it too.:agree::agree:

The girl who cut my hair did a nice job, but the owner was trying to push me into making appointments for color, eyebrow waxing, mani/pedi and my next cut. She totally turned me off and I will not go back.

I've been going there for 6 months. I was pleased from the beginning with haircut and color. You have to understand that if you find a student you like she will eventually graduate. Happened to me, but the girl suggested another student and she gave me a great haircut that I really like.
The big negative is that a cut and color can take up to 3 hours because of waiting for the instructor to sign off. Prices are very reasonable (as they should be).

My daughter had a good experience at the beauty school so I went for a cut and highlights. I understand it's a school and they are learning, but 5 hours for highlights and a cut was way to long. I tried to be patient, it was very hard. My first student had to leave after the highlights so they gave me another to cut my hair, she was sooooo slow also that the instructor ended up cutting part of my hair. The total job was ok, but I won't go abck because of the time issues. And I agree that some of the students do not present a very professional look. Oh, and don't get me started on the gum chewing !

I hate to sound like the ole lady I am, but I agree about the piercings and tattoos, they are unprofessional. I once took my dog to a vet who had a vet in training working there, she had blue hair, piercings all over and dressed very strangely. I could barely concentrate on what she was saying about my doggie.

We all wonder the same thing, what will these young ladies think when they become 40? Or want to wear a beautiful wedding gown? On the other hand, I guess if they truly want to be an individual, they truly are, not for me to really judge.

Just think, in about 30 years there will be alot of 50 plus women walking around with lots of fading and stretched out tattoos, not a pretty picture in my humble opinion.

Oh, I think it's just a phase and a result of all these style-conscious young ladies being together. They do each others hair so it's probably a competition to see who can come up with the wildest "do." And they all have to wear plain black clothes while they're working, which is pretty grim.

Went to the Beauty school last week. Had a mani and pedi. Yes it took long but these are students. She did an awesome job! Really worked on the bottoms of my feet!!! Then I had a color and foil highlights. Again the color was perfect and the teacher put my foils in as she was explaining the technique to the student. The place is clean and they take their time because they want to do a good job. I tipped generously because I was extremely happy with my services. The young lady I had was called Angel. Very polite and professional.

A few days later, I had a facial. I could not believe how wonderful and relaxing it was just to have my face cleansed and pampered, I think I fell asleep for a couple of seconds. The dim lights and the music was soothing to me.

Well that was my experience there at the Beauty school.:thumbup:

I had a pedicure and manicure there. Pedicure was fine but not what I am use to. The manicure was okay but I had a split in my nail, that needed to be glued. NO GLUE!! So of course my nail broke. For the price the manicure was fine. The Noise was unbelievable in there. No way to relax with a manicure and they really don't inspect the work. The teacher came by looked at removal of polish and signed the paper work for the student. Back to the noise: I wear a hearing aid and even with it turned almost completely off it was so noisy. I would rather pay a little more and enjoy my pedicure so I am relaxed. Just MHO

Like Mikark, I found the noise really bothersome. And it is very time consuming. On my last visit I asked for hair colouring of light brown. The trainee coloured my hair a jet black. The supervisor agreed it was horrible. And said she was sorry, but there was nothing they could do to lighten it. :grumpy: That was a two years ago, and I haven't been back.

Nonie, IMHO, you have special hair, and you need an experienced beautician!

Bare, you are being so kind by calling my hair special, and you even cracked Halle up!!! you have a way with words!

Lets tell it like it is! It is a nappy, , frizz ball and should be chopped off to the scalp! But its me and Ive grown rather fond of it over the years. Wait until you see me in my new funky wig!!!!! LOL!

I had my first experience two weeks ago and it was positive. The gal I'd made the appointment with ended up not being able to cut my hair but her replacement did a fine job and I booked another appointment to go back. On Wednesday's they have a deep conditioning treatment for $2!

Are you sure you went to the Academy, "dim lights and music", Soooothing!!?
I can still remember jumping out of my skin as one of the instructors or students yelled "Keep it Clean", everything was clean except my underwear!!!

I was there last week and had the best hair cut I've had in a long time. I will definately go back.

Remember, this is a "school". These students are learning, so of course it's going to take longer. Color and hi-lites are always time consuming.

I was tired of paying the "going" price for a simple hair cut, so thought I'd try the beauty school, and am totally pleased with their facility and prices.

Again, it's all in what you want in the experience.

It's my understanding that they teach hair styling at the mortuary school in Orlando. You just have to be still and not move while they do it. :cool:

When I wrote of the soothing music, I was meaning that as I was having my facial in a closed off room, it was quiet and the lights were dim and there was soothing music.

The Beauty School is not for everyone of course, but it is a place of learning and these people need to learn to keep their space clean.

For me it is not an everytime place to go to, but I really like to support these students too.

Sigh.. had a bad experience with a pedicure this time. I will never return but do wish the students good luck in their chosen field.

First of all...it's a school. You will see the tatoos, piercings etc. at regular salons. Don't have to like it but it's part of their culture.

As for time...yes it can be lengthy there. I'd ask for a "senior" student to try to get someone whose a bit quicker and has a bit more experience. I've gone there for cuts and pedicures. The last pedicure was with Bonnie and it was very good and we had a great time chatting. She'll graduate in March ('11) I probably will reserve my future cuts for a salon as I'm picky about who does that to my hair.
